The reason why I believe the homebrew scene is dead and not coming back

After being out of the forum for quite a while for personal reasons, things have really changed around here.

Like expected, new exploits would appear, and this time, it was a massive one. But here's the catch: kernel access. Oh boy, that's why smea was trying to avoid it. Everybody went crazy, after downgrade utilities were released. But why downgrade? Will it make your system better? Will you have access to the Nintendo Network service? Nah, it's for one simple reason that everybody refuses to talk around here: piracy.

No, "backups" won't make you more legit, since it's still illegal to have a backup of a non-destructive media format and with copy protection (CDs, cartridges, etc), by some worldwide laws (check here). Also, you're just a little liar saying that you want to have copies of the games you "own". To say the truth, nobody really cares about homebrew. It's all about having free games and emulators at any time, anywhere, and people saw homebrew as a kind of a temporary solution for this.

Proof? Look at this forum. Less than one third of the topics from the first page are related to homebrew (excluding emulators, ugh), and most other topics aren't even supposed to be here. That's why I (and of what I saw, many other developers) gave up entirely on the scene for the system, and moved on into something better. And for me, it's really not coming back, since everybody will be satisfied with their free games and not caring anymore for new, unique and different projects.

Just my rant about the current situation. Please don't delete my topic or hunt me with pitchforks.

This. This exactly is the issue.

Smea worked hard to put what he did in the latest versions of userlandhax. ROM hacks, screenshots, eShop access on lower firmwares (for a bit) and exploits in every single little hole. He did this all on the newest firmware, and he's done every single thing people apparently want with homebrew on their 3DS. All except for easy piracy on the newest firmware.

Everything you want with homebrew is on the newest firmware. There is literally NO reason whatsoever at all to downgrade, except for piracy. ROM hacks, save data injection, ports of popular games, great emulators (which STILL is piracy) are all on the newest firmware. And all people want is a way to play Fire Emblem Fates, Mario and Luigi: Paper Jam, and Monster Hunter X, right now, on their 3DS, before it comes out in America, for free. No one considers the work smea put towards it, as people just want the magical Gateway, rxTools, and NTR CFW to come around and signature patch their 3DS so they can install all the free games. THAT is why no work is being put on homebrew. Because everyone's too busy playing free games that have been already made.
I disagree with your blanket statements, and I think they make you look silly.

Because your computer has far more power to handle the 'overhead' of emulating the GC's PPC architecture. And because Dolphin has had quite a bit of work put into it.
Yeah, I can see where you're coming from now.

Still, it wouldn't hurt to make even a slow port of Dolphin.

Having the possibility of piracy doesn't mean you want kernel access ONLY for that purpose

If you want to, there's no reason to not try. At the very very least, you'd still likely end up learning something new in the process.

What if I want physical copies of the eShop games I own? The eShop won't last forever.
Read the link that I've posted in OP. It explains a little bit of that, too.

Wait, physical copies? Are you going to create special cartridges?

It'll probably just run at 1.4328 FPS... :glare:

Do you think there are more posts about all new homebrew applications, or more posts about emulators, CFW, downgrading, and CIA installation?

I am a pirate, yes.
Got many titles illegally for pc, hacked my PSP in the past mainly for that as well.
And 3DS / Nintendo? I'd never do that, honestly.
If I feel games I play/want to play should be payed for, I do that. And regarding Nintendo,
they offer a LOT of amazing games and I'd just feel bad for pirating any of them.
Also, Nintendo just has a special place in my heart and I love to support them as much as I can.

So yes I downgraded but definitely not for pirating.
I just love to hack things and every additional possibility or piece of freedom I get while doing that
is just totally worth the effort ;)

What else would anyone need kernel access for? Most heavily requested things have been implemented in 10.3 userland.

Hahahahahano, he'll just put them on his Gateway.

I've pirated PSP, 3DS, DS, GBA, N64, SNES, Wii, and GameCube.

I am a very Dirty Entitled Pirate™ :^)

Still, these new developments, if anything, will help enlarge the homebrew scene, not hinder it. Not like a lot was happening before, at least it's got more attention now.

Also, of course this forum is gonna be filled with downgrade threads now, thousands of peoples previously stuck on 9.2+ are downgrading their consoles with tools published here, ALL AT THE SAME TIME. It will slow down eventually.

Coming from someone who pirates games pretty often, I would much rather have new homebrew than a way to pirate. New homebrew games or ports of PC games would be something new.
Anyone can buy a cartridge of a game and play it either way. All people want is to play them for free.

I would MUCH rather have all new content created, than a way to have paid content I can already buy, for free.

Why can't we have a cool and peaceful scene, like the DS/PSP community? Are we really that far from reaching this simple point?

I don't get what you mean by that at all.

the DS and PSP communities had drama and stupidity, just like the 3DS and Wii/U communities. Honestly, other than some people/teams that have specifically trolled us (I'm looking at you, SALT), the 3DS scene has been pretty calm, and pretty productive.

There's plenty of active developers right now. @dark_samus3, @d0k3 , @Steveice10 , Smea...

Actually, you know what?

Smea said it WAY better than I could.

A woman with no arms and no legs was sitting on a beach. A man comes along and the woman says, "I've never been hugged before." So the man feels bad and hugs her. She says "Well i've also never been kissed before." So he gives her a kiss on the cheek. She says "Well I've also never been fucked before." So the man picks her up, and throws her in the ocean and says "Now you're fucked."

anyways, we need to re-normalize physical media

@BakerMan - you can still "own" digital media, arguably easier and better than physical since you can make copies and backups, as much as you like.

    The issue is DRM
  • cearp @ cearp:
You can buy drm free games / music / ebooks, and if you keep backups of your data (like documents and family photos etc), then you shouldn't lose the game. but with a disk, your toddler could put it in the toaster and there goes your $60

    :rofl2:
  • cearp @ cearp:
still, I agree physical media is nice to have. just pointing out the issue is drm
  • rqkaiju2 @ rqkaiju2:
i like physical media because it actually feels like you own it. thats why i plan on burning music to cds

It's nice to not have to have a lot of physical things though, saves space
