The reason why I believe the homebrew scene is dead and not coming back

After being out of the forum for quite a while for personal reasons, things have really changed around here.

Like expected, new exploits would appear, and this time, it was a massive one. But here's the catch: kernel access. Oh boy, that's why smea was trying to avoid it. Everybody went crazy, after downgrade utilities were released. But why downgrade? Will it make your system better? Will you have access to the Nintendo Network service? Nah, it's for one simple reason that everybody refuses to talk around here: piracy.

No, "backups" won't make you more legit, since it's still illegal to have a backup of a non-destructive media format and with copy protection (CDs, cartridges, etc), by some worldwide laws (check here). Also, you're just a little liar saying that you want to have copies of the games you "own". To say the truth, nobody really cares about homebrew. It's all about having free games and emulators at any time, anywhere, and people saw homebrew as a kind of a temporary solution for this.

Proof? Look at this forum. Less than one third of the topics from the first page are related to homebrew (excluding emulators, ugh), and most other topics aren't even supposed to be here. That's why I (and of what I saw, many other developers) gave up entirely on the scene for the system, and moved on into something better. And for me, it's really not coming back, since everybody will be satisfied with their free games and not caring anymore for new, unique and different projects.

Just my rant about the current situation. Please don't delete my topic or hunt me with pitchforks.

I don't pirate any game, i don't play Nintendo 3DS games, but i'm fascinated by the creative projects that come up.
The only reason why i would downgrade is to maintain certainty to not accedenticly update my firmware and lose ability to run the home-brew channel.
I don't use home-brew either. but once in a while i like to check out others work.
Also it think it is a great way to expend your own limits in programming languages.
This summer for example i learned to code in C (never did C before, always (kind'a simple, beginners) C++).

I also think that this community is Awesome, there are a lot of intelligent and creative people here.
Homebrew is a method for us to join together and try to make the best of it.
It's a worldwide project with hundreds (maybe even thousands) of participants.

Homebrew is not dead.
It won't become super popular,
It won't keep people from piracy.
But it is definitely not dead.

EDIT: A Non piracy mode would be cool for this site though.
If there was an option to disallow talking about piracy in your thread (resulting in a temp ban if you talk in piracy or so)., and could filter out all piracy enabled threads, i would do it!

Hmmm and both had rampant piracy......
They had a much bigger library of custom software, and I remember testing lots of different games and utilities with my DS Lite (rip top screen). People at the time at least kept piracy and homebrew as different topics, and that isn't the case for today.

To be honest, I don't pirate™ enough as I would like to nowadays, as I usually just get wrapped up in game development more than anything. Preferrably more PS Vita than 3DS and others.

i believe piracy really started with the playstation one.... i never pirated much really in fact i had over 500 original games for my cpc464 and c64 ....then atari st and amiga game out and boom it exploded...

I don't get what you mean by that at all.

the DS and PSP communities had drama and stupidity, just like the 3DS and Wii/U communities. Honestly, other than some people/teams that have specifically trolled us (I'm looking at you, SALT), the 3DS scene has been pretty calm, and pretty productive.

There's plenty of active developers right now. @dark_samus3, @d0k3 , @Steveice10 , Smea...

Actually, you know what?

Smea said it WAY better than I could.

Go to 1:09:03.

It suprises me that Nintendo didn't let the police arrest smea doing that conference

Coming from someone who pirates games pretty often, I would much rather have new homebrew than a way to pirate. New homebrew games or ports of PC games would be something new.
Anyone can buy a cartridge of a game and play it either way. All people want is to play them for free.

I would MUCH rather have all new content created, than a way to have paid content I can already buy, for free.
Then write some instead of begging devs to return focus.

Long enough to have a legit copy of this that was bought back when it was new... :)

I'm quite suprised that ESRB were rating games as far back as then.

At this point I think you're just using this thread to brag about what games you have in your collection.
Oh, so it's bragging instead of proving I'm not 'the cancer killing the dev-scene'? Make your mind up, darling~

Hasn't there always been more interest in piracy than homebrew? I don't see how anything has changed or why homebrew is now suddenly dead when everything is as it always was.

Also, I'm no developer, but doesn't kernel access give devs the possibility to make better homebrew that utilizes both kernels? Now, building homebrew takes time, so of course the piracy comes first while we wait for the homebrew developers to contribute.

One could even take it farther and say that piracy is a primary driver of interest in homebrew... if there were no piracy then homebrew might really be dead.

EDIT - After 2 1/2 years, my 100th post! Woot! :toot: I can verify if the trading forums really exist or are just a myth...

What else would anyone need kernel access for? Most heavily requested things have been implemented in 10.3 userland.

Hahahahahano, he'll just put them on his Gateway.
Well, you can go with your 3ds wherever you want with all your 3ds games you already own without the need of go out with all the cartridges, for whatever reason. Also this is useful for researching purposes

The fact we can now run homebrew directly on the console and not under some buggy and unstable rop module makes me want to develop stuff.

Also.
Building home-brew on a low level can take some time.
As time goes by and frameworks similar to SFML come out the home-brew development will grow.
It's just getting started

EDIT: It won't take long until this community massively collaborates on an MMO or something.
I'm even considering starting it in a few months if no one hasn't already by then

Then write some instead of begging devs to return focus.
Unluckily for you, I'm just one of the many, many GBATemp noobs who can use and talk about 3DS homebrew but has no idea how to code it.
Oh, so it's bragging instead of proving I'm not 'the cancer killing the dev-scene'? Make your mind up, darling~
You could've easily said "I've been collecting since xxxx" not "Hey, I have this hard to find game in my collection"

People at the time at least kept piracy and homebrew as different topics, and that isn't the case for today.
because on the DS, all you needed to do was buy a flashcard from a shady website and drop all of your games onto it. with the 3DS, doing either homebrew or piracy requires a lot more work, piracy even moreso because the only flashcard now that doesn't require a kernel exploit is also much more expensive than a cheap R4 clone. the two scenes aren't that comparable.

i remember queueing at woolworths on the morning of the release of QUACKSHOT for the sega megadrive and i paid £40.00 for it..... bought lots of games....

You could download all those games through the eShop with actual money, too. You don't need kernel to not use cartridges.

@SylverReZ if you could find a v5 DS ML you would have the best of both worlds since the v5 units had the same backlight brightness levels as the DS Lite unlockable with flashme

A woman with no arms and no legs was sitting on a beach. A man comes along and the woman says, "I've never been hugged before." So the man feels bad and hugs her. She says "Well i've also never been kissed before." So he gives her a kiss on the cheek. She says "Well I've also never been fucked before." So the man picks her up, and throws her in the ocean and says "Now you're fucked."

anyways, we need to re-normalize physical media

Agreed, that why I try to buy all my games on disc, Xbox anyways. Switch games (which I pirate tbh) don't matter much, I stay offline 24/7 anyways.

@BakerMan - you can still "own" digital media, arguably easier and better than physical since you can make copies and backups, as much as you like.

    The issue is DRM

  • cearp @ cearp:
You can buy drm free games / music / ebooks, and if you keep backups of your data (like documents and family photos etc), then you shouldn't lose the game. but with a disk, your toddler could put it in the toaster and there goes your $60

    :rofl2:
  • cearp @ cearp:
still, I agree physical media is nice to have. just pointing out the issue is drm
