So today I got another New 3DS XL to play with/resell. It's pretty much brand new in box, and came with two games. I check the firmware, and it's 11.1. I go through the new steps and remember to put server_config.xml onto the card.
The cfw'ed system I had is a Galaxy style one, and uses a 64 gb card (so I can make sure that all the files go onto the card itself as well as having enough room to do nand backups). I do the system transfer, it goes by easily and I manage to get Fieldrunners onto the new 3DS XL. So far so good. By rote, I ended up putting the 2.1 ctrnand files onto the card, and the files for the 9.2 downgrade. I get into sysdowngrader and do the first downgrade.
The stupid part comes next - I did the 2.1 CTRNAND transfer. An eternity later, I come back to an "unbootable" 3DS. Now I start to panic, and then I figured I didn't delete the home menu's ext data. I do that, and the system boots. Now, I go set up the Internet settings, and go toss the old version of SafeA9LHInstaller onto it. I install A9LH onto the system with no sweat. I configure Luma, and then I give myself a heart attack...Luma says it fails to mount CTRNAND.
I figured I bricked my system and start kicking myself. And then I check the SD card and remember that the 2.1 CTRNAND transfer makes you make a 9.2 backup. I use Hourglass9 to reflash the nand, after chickening out a few times (I didn't know if it was this system's nand, but I always used the OTPless version). Bam! My 3DS was working again, and I just about killed a couple of brain cells trying to figure out user error.
So, never ever do things by memory. Check your work against the Plailect Guide! If I hadn't made a backup on 9.2, the system would be useless as hell...
