probably dumb idea, but it sounds interesting in my ears

imagine a friendslist on the 3ds where you enter usernames instead of friendscodes, but you still are on nintendos server, but like a secondary server recognizes the username as the friendscode.

here an example:

Person A has the fc 0000-0000-0000-0001, which registers his fc under the username test.
Person B adds person a and enters the username test and the secondary server knows test = 0000-0000-0000-0001 and sends that information to nintendo that the person wants to add the fc 0000-0000-0000-0001

would that be possible?

Oh and i didnt post it in 3ds community cause it sounds too dumb to post it there

Adding friends directly like this sounds a bit far-fetched, but I could imagine a homebrew friend code database.

Sounds like XBL, PSN and Steam to me ;')
Something Nintendo doesn't know about.

Wait, wasn't NNID also usernames?

@DinohScene the wiiu had it that you entered the nnid instead of a friendcode, iirc the only nintendo console without friendcodes

I don't know why Nintendo didn't do this when they implemented NNIDs on 3DS. It would have been so easy for them to simply allow people to search for people by their NNID, and then have the backend return the friend code.
Literally the only use NNIDs had on the 3DS was Miiverse and now that's gone too.

Before I start having flashbacks to my time messing around with ldap (a late 90s replacement to a bunch of similar services from the 80s and prior) which do something broadly similar, among many other things, but from what I recall Nintendo handwaved it as being so as to protect the kiddies.

It would have been trivial for Nintendo to add such a service, even as a purely optional one, but they did not. Trickiest part would be if saves with code lists were stored on carts as you would have to intercept those, though the very same thing that a lot of the cheat/file replacement things offer would do just that quite handily.

@NicoAICP As SirNapkin above said (don't know why after a month and a half), the FC system allows people with the same username because ONLY the FC matters. When adding people, the only thing that gets checked is the FC, username can be whatever.

@smileyhead Actually, the NNID and the FC name are completely irrelevant with one another. NNID is the username you use for functions involving the eshop, while the FC name is for general online services (not requiring payment). That's why you can freely change your FC name but not your NNID (you can change this too but it's a pain). To sum it up, FC name is simply how your system appears on other systems, while NNID is how your system appears in Ninty's servers.

I will admit that one does seem more interesting than the usual Ambernic ones, and I already liked those.

    I dread the price point.

This looks like one of their premium models, so... $150 :glare:

    To me that seems reasonable.
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I mean since basically all the games are errmmm free lol
  • Veho @ Veho:
I mean yeah sure but the specs are the same as a $50 model, it's just those pesky "quality of life" things driving up the price, like an actually working speaker, or buttons that don't melt, and stuff like that.

I think all in my Pi 4 was well north of 200 bucks 150ish for the Pi 4 the case the fancy cooler, then like 70 for the 500GB MicroSD then like 70 for the Xbox controller. But honestly it's a nice set up I really enjoy and to me was worth every penny. (even bought more controllers for 2 or 4 player games.) hmmm have never played any 2 player games yet :(
  • Veho @ Veho:
Yeah that's what I hate about the RPi, it's supposedly $30 or something but it takes an additional $200 of accessories to actually turn it into a working something.
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
yes that's the expensive part lol
  • Veho @ Veho:
I mean sure it's flexible and stuff but so is uremum but it's fiddly.
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
Yeah a lot of it I consider a hobby, using Batocera I am constantly adjusting the collection adding and removing stuff, scraping the artwork. Haven't even started on some music for the theme... Also way down the road I am considering attempting to do a WiiFlow knock off lol
  • Veho @ Veho:
I want everything served on a plate plz ktnx, "work" is too much work for me.
  • Veho @ Veho:
Hmm, with that in mind, maybe a complete out-the-box solution with all the games collected, pacthed and optimized for me would be worth $150
