people at my school got scammed of cfw

so the other day I decided to bring my 3ds to school and it was around lunchtime, so I started playing it and my friend goes "wtf how did you get all this stuff" then I go "yup it's hecked, want me to do it to yours" so when I got home I did the dsiware crud since he was on 11.6 and dhdgdisjdhdgdisjneyeggd you know what happens. So the next day I give my friend his 3ds back, and right when he gets it he starts bragging about in front of everyone. I kinda thought it was a bit annoying but whatever. about a week passes by and since i walk to school, I saw a kid who looked like he was maybe in 3rd or 4th grade and he was on his 3ds and so i peeked over at it and he apparently had freeshop so i replied "oh you have cfw, cool" then he says "yup, dis older boi got it on here 4 meh, he made me pay $40 tho" and I was thinking "wait, shouldn't cfw be free and always free" I was about to tell him he should get his money back but it was too late, so later in the day I tell my friend that a little kid got scammed of cfw and wouldn't you know my friend says "yeah I think I got a little kid cfw yesterday for $40* I was suprised that he probably already knew about plailects guide or just followed a tutorial on youtube. I asked if he did it to any other people and apparently he did and he's made a profit off of about 20 other people.

he hasn't been my friend since

(just in case if you're wondering yes everyone got their money back)

I'm not defending the guy, but he provided a service at a cost. Nothing really wrong with that.
You can't go get your car repaired and only expect to pay the price of the parts. Life just doesn't work that way.
How long did it take you to install CFW for someone? 10 minutes, 1 hour, 2 hours? Time is money. You are sacrificing your time to install something for someone else.
If a friend asked me to install CFW for them, I would do it for free, but if some random passerby wants it too, you can bet I'll charge him for it (or I'll just refuse because I don't know him).

can't blame him tbh. like GameSystem said. if some random dude asked me to install cfw, i would charge him. if people were willing to pay $20 without doing reasearch, it's on them. also, he had to use dsiware to install cfw, which takes some time. even if he used a flashcart, he would have spent at least 20 on it, so he's just getting money back.

If he is charging to install it then that is a service of his time and energy. probably $40 is a bit high but everyone has a time value rate. I charge $100 per hour. He could have donated some of the money to the dev team. Selling cfw itself as a means of profit is a different thing altogether but heh. ninty doesnt like it either way because they lose profits especially if lots and lots of people start doing it. so it best to avoid noobs that might cause problems.

"he could have donated some of the money to a Dev team" let's be realistic here, people who charge for custom firmware installations two days after learning about it RARELY coincide with people who give charitably

It should be free, but honestly that kid was just exploiting an easy market. Ignorance pays and if people want to pay for something that they could do for free, then I say just accept the payment and do the job.

@Lilith Valentine it should be noted though that what he did is INCREDIBLY illegal, at least in the US. Accepting payment to install either copyrighted content you don't own or a means to easily download said content is a BIG no-no

There's a scam warning on the HackMii installer for the Wii relating to money and stuff.

...Wait, he's not charging people for providing the software he's just charging for installing it ._.

A bit of a cheapskate if you ask me, $40 is a lot for some people.

Also youtube tutorials suck.

I GUESS there's nothing really wrong with this, aside from taking advantage of some people, but...crap I forget what I was gonna say.

You could also go on YouTube and learn how to install an operating system on a computer, or you could go to your local computer shop and pay them £100 to backup your data, re install the operating system and all the required drivers.

If you choose to pay then you are paying for a service, which includes someones time and skills.

This is really no different. Anyone who didn't want to pay for this service could have typed "3ds custom firmware" in to Google, clicked on the first result 3ds.hacks.guide which has everything they need to do it themselves.

It's only illegal if they are installing pirated games in the process, or selling free open source software / tools instead of providing a service.

TBH, I run a small 3DS CFW install business (hardly anybody at my school plays 3DS though so =/), and I charge $15-$20 for an install. With that, however, comes everything you'd ever need, and everything's setup for you to start doing whatever you want. I know a lot of the people couldn't really hack their 3DS because it's just too complicated for them, and I do charge that money so I can make some profit. $40 is outrageous though. Also, it's probably bad to show young kids like that (3rd/4th grade) how to pirate games, they'll probably end up doing it for most games.

@SirNapkin1334 what the hell do you think my 3rd and 4th grade buddies did in computer lab? Study? Don't make me laugh. Been pirating since I 2002...
