Is it wrong to be "proud to be an American"?

So I'm American and I'm proud of it. I'm proud of the men and women who have fought and are fighting to defend our country. I'm proud of the ideals and dreams our country was founded on. And I'm proud of. And I'm proud to live in a country with the energy and liveliness that is distinctly American. Now I'm aware that our country is flawed. I'm aware the government is far from perfect (though not as bad as people say), and I'm aware that the past few years may have been a step back in societal advancement, but there's a lot of good to be found here. All I've seen on the internet recently are posts on how tragic America is and how it's the worst place in the world. This comes especially from my generation millenial-gen z (if you consider gen z existant). I feel like this is part of a larger issue where younger generations "rebel" as a way to stand out, but end up being just like everyone else. However, that's a topic for a different day. I guess what I'm trying to say is, I wish people were less... confrontational for lack of a better term, and could enjoy what they had. Anyway, sorry for the little rant or whatever. This is just a piece of what's been going on in my mind lately.

You mean warred with them for centuries before finally winning? And honestly, it was just a conquering. Who cares? You probably can't find a culture on Earth who hasn't conquered another. It's just a part of humanity's history. America wasn't the first and won't be the last. What is Israel?

@TotalInsanity4 how is that in any way vile? Specifically the "better than other countries" part? We are, objectively, better than any other country. Again, we ar ethe only country on this planet with actual freedom of speech. No other country that purports to have freedom of speech will actually protect your freedom of speech.

@Dominator211

We already are tolerant of new people. Didn't America elect a black dude president 8 years ago? Didn't the majority of America via the popular vote want a woman as president in 2016?

What we don't tolerate is insanity, and that is what unending illegal immigration is. That needs to stop. If by accepting other people you were referring to illegals, then yeah, I won't tolerate that.

personally when we get that bad itchy "ass rash" called trump out of office for most people they'll begin to love the US again both domestic and international, as i do hope the electoral college will do a better job and congress rewrites some laws giving electoral college a way to deny a person entry into the presidency if this shit happens again to prevent it we have a lot of work to do after he's gone to recover our tarnished image from him hopefully the next guy/girl won't be a total Dbag like trump is

Trump is no dirt bag my friend. He's literally exactly what this country needed. The electoral college is fine. And lol, buying into the garbage the media feeds americans about a tarnished image. Our image is better than it has been in decades. What some rat infested media wants to present as a bad image does not matter to me.

This is really all that needs to be said on the subject of America's greatness, one of the best clips from any TV show ever:

"We aspired to intelligence, we didn't belittle it; it didn't make us feel inferior."

People aren’t tolerant amongst themselves. I don’t know how many times I have seen another American be intolerant of another human for whatever reason. People can’t agree to disagree. Most adults today really don’t know how to comprise and I mean ones in a political place of power. Case in point gun violence. The left and right can’t agree on what to do and thus we cannot proceed in coming to a desicion. This is why shootings keep happening. I didn’t nessarly mean the us as a whole. But certain groups of people can hold us back as a nation somtimes.

It's not wrong but America as a country doesn't stand for anything positive. We're just full of nationalist scum that are kept under control (heh, if it was up to them, we'd nuke any and every country who ever spoke negatively about us just to prove dominance).

@dimmidice I got my life expectancy numbers from the Buisness of Health book pg.22.

http://www.aei.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/-the-business-of-health_110115929760.pdf

A lot of life expectancy list don’t control for factors like accidents, obesity, murder and so on which are causes outside of the Hospital’s control. When controlling for those factors U.S. ranks the top Highest life expectancy of all the OECD Countries.

I got my cancer survival numbers from pg.24. Women with thyroid cancers survive at least 5 years in the U.S. And reading the article you linked. U.S. does have much more adavanced equipment, and better early diagnosis. It does complain about over treatment, but that’s probably the good thing which leads to higher life expectancy.

They also compared U.S. to Denmark, Sweden, Canada and so on in the book. And among the 5 countries used for comparison, U.S ranked either best or 2nd best in over half of the 21 categories they used. Basically no country is better than the other and they all have something to learn from each other. But U.S. is definitely not on the low end when it comes to health treatment.

@Xzi Half of the people that are uninsured are above the poverty line by 200%. And it’s disproportionately young people because they feel they don’t need it. And 20% have 400% or more above the line. Many can afford insurance but choose not to get it.

There are also people qualified for Medicaid but choose not to get it for some reason. 10-20% in the census bureau that said they had no insurance actually had insurance but didn’t know. Could be lack of information.

For people that are uninsured there is no consensus on how to properly insure them. You can say we should insure them because we should take care of everyone, but that not helpful. It’s not a specific plan. It’s too general. How should we go about it? The U.S. system isn’t completely bad. But it does needs some tweaks. And other countries benefits from our extra spending and innovations. And we get shorter wait times. So how should we cover the uninsured while keeping these benefits from the U.S?

No, it is not wrong. If you are an American and you are so proud of it minus a bad healthcare, higher cost of living and etc then I am happy for you.

I am living in America as an American Citizen but born in Portugal as Portuguese Citizen. So, I am proud to be Portuguese, not an American citizen.

Thus the Obamacare mandate, which Trump repealed. When nobody healthy/young joins the insurance pool, it raises everybody's premiums. IMO the entire healthcare insurance industry is a scam to begin with, but it's a natural consequence of our unwavering dedication to capitalism.

@alexg1989 just off the top of my head, you've stated that rather than being forcably conquered, annihilated by both hunters and disease, raped, rounded up, "Americanized", and relocated after being effectively tricked out of their land, we were simply "at war" with the Native Americans, you've presented illegal immigration as though it's actually an issue -- which, given the current rhetoric of the nation, is the most understandable of my grievances, but there are quite a lot of numbers saying, for instance, that asylum fraud (or, the proper term for illegal immigration), has been on a rapid decline and is at quite literally an all time low, immigrants are NOT stealing jobs (for more reasons than one, I'll explain deeper if you'd like), and that most of the people crossing the southern border are, in fact, people legitimately seeking asylum and have properly declared as such when crossing, and have also painted Nationalism (NOT Patriotism) in a positive light. It's possible you meant Patriotism, but if not, again, the reason Nationalism is NOT a good thing is something that I'll be willing to explain more thoroughly if you'd like me too, but until then, I'd just like to say: 1932

You can't take pride in something that you did nothing to achieve.

Where you are born is just a coincidence, you played no part in it.
You can be proud if you learn something, or practice something etc, but where you are born, ethnicity and other things are false pride.

You're too naive. The left has no interest in compromising. Their goal is the repeal of the second amendment. That can never ever be allowed to happen. There can be no compromise here.

And shootings don't occur because the left and right can't agree on this issue. They occur because barbarism is a part of human nature. People weren't less barbaric before the invention of guns. Have you heard of Montezuma?

Good grief all this infighting because of pride. If you think it's so bad to have nationalism, then at least be grateful you live in a first world country.
