Is it wrong to be "proud to be an American"?

So I'm American and I'm proud of it. I'm proud of the men and women who have fought and are fighting to defend our country. I'm proud of the ideals and dreams our country was founded on. And I'm proud of. And I'm proud to live in a country with the energy and liveliness that is distinctly American. Now I'm aware that our country is flawed. I'm aware the government is far from perfect (though not as bad as people say), and I'm aware that the past few years may have been a step back in societal advancement, but there's a lot of good to be found here. All I've seen on the internet recently are posts on how tragic America is and how it's the worst place in the world. This comes especially from my generation millenial-gen z (if you consider gen z existant). I feel like this is part of a larger issue where younger generations "rebel" as a way to stand out, but end up being just like everyone else. However, that's a topic for a different day. I guess what I'm trying to say is, I wish people were less... confrontational for lack of a better term, and could enjoy what they had. Anyway, sorry for the little rant or whatever. This is just a piece of what's been going on in my mind lately.

Yeah your last name, is a fabrication to. So is religion. Yet people are proud of those things. Or any other title you could give yourself. You can be proud of being a hippie for all I care. https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/pride

When you consider how much money goes into the American economy vs. the prevalence and intensity of social injustice there, it honestly becomes inconceivable. It's built on greed and ignorance for the benefit of an economic minority, at the expense of the majority. It just doesn't make sense.

It's not wrong to be proud to be an American (albeit nonsensical, since being born a particular place is not an achievement, it's chance), but I would personally shy away from people that excited about it because it's an expression of complacency in the face of so much that needs to be fixed.

Nothing wrong with being proud of your homeland, it'd be weird if you weren't.
Just as long as you aren't proud of the current presidency, that is :P

@The Real Jdbye

But the current president has been the best one in decades, and that's after just less than 2 years.

As has been pointed out numerous times, just about every country has its issues. The bigger problem with the US is that we have the money and resources to resolve pretty much all of our issues, but we simply choose not to. Instead we give everything away to our richest yuppies and expect them to do the benevolent thing, which never ends up happening.

I don't know if I would use the term richest yuppies. Yuppie in the traditional sense was young urban professional and was mostly about said young professionals enjoying fancy suits, fancy tech, fancy cars and other status symbols. Frequently distasteful maybe but hardly a great concern, unless as the term was coined in the 90s and as that was nearly 3 decades ago at times said yuppies have since gone on to stamp all over transport, infrastructure, building, finance, education, matters military, outsourced a lot of things/options the less capable in society did to support themselves and the law in a bid for some short term profit.

As far as best president in the comment prior to that I am curious how you might have arrived at that conclusion. Bit of a shift from previous efforts (I think I have previously linked this video which brings up many of the things I might have) but I am at a loss to see how he is of any great quality, save perhaps over Bush Jr but that is not a great feat when all is said and done. At best I am seeing someone that will coast which is perfectly doable but someone to actually do things might have been better.

@FAST6191 I was using it more in the "born rich and never worked an honest day in their life" sense.

americans complain too damn much and get triggered over the dumbest crap. americans should just be happy we're alive and with more freedoms than other countries. it could be like other countries with no freedom of speech, a country that believes in socialistic or communistic values, a country that is so poor that it's eating its own animals for food. I love my country regardless of the dumbasses on the left or the right, the gov or whether my president is tRump or Oblama. instead of people always protesting here should be going out and save the planet instead of themselves with selfish ideologies.

Are you... Really complaining and being overly sensitive about the fact that other Americans complain and you think they're overly sensitive? How can you not see the irony in that?

Also I suppose I'm slightly confused as to what you think Americans by-and-large eat, if not animals raised on American soil

There is nothing to be proud of about leftism. Other than that, if you are not proud of America, time to think about moving.

It seems deflecting responsibility is one of leftism's main tenants. Either someone / thing is to blame for one's lack of accomplishments. And its someone else's responsibility to make up for this. In my opinion - this isnt something to be proud of.

And what exactly do righties have to be proud of? Sharing a party with those that assassinated JFK and Lincoln? The KKK? Disgraceful and weak homophobes?

Don't think it's really wrong? To be happy for being born in your country and being proud for it isn't wrong, but as others said, it really depends on what you're proud of. There's many things that every single country has done wrong, but if you're proud of your culture, the way your culture is, it's unique way to be, or anything in those means, i see absolutely no problem whatsoever.

i thought everybody knew cocktails are like 75% ice
  • Veho @ Veho:
    Yeah but not like this.
  • Veho @ Veho:
It's not like they're complaining that their Slurpee is 99% ice or something, but if the cocktail calls for "shot of vodka, shot of vermouth, shot of gin, shot of Campari, three shots of juice, squirt of lemon" and ends up being a thimbleful of booze, that's a problem.
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
the funny thing is cocktails in norway are only allowed to have 1 20ml shot of booze
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    so..... yeah
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
we're used to only having a thimbleful of booze
  • Veho @ Veho:
    Booo.
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
same thing if you want whisky on the rocks or something, you can't get a double
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
but you could buy as many shots of whisky (or anything else) as you want and ask for a glass of ice and pour them in
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    it's dumb
  • Veho @ Veho:
    Maybe.
  • Veho @ Veho:
There was a comparison of the number of Ibuprofen poisonings before and after they limited the maximum dosage per box or per pill (i'll look that up). No limit on the number of boxes you can still buy as many as you want, so people argued it was pointless.
  • Veho @ Veho:
But the number of (accidental) poisonings dropped because drinking an entire package of ibuprofen pills went from "I need a new liver" to "I need a new box of Ibuprofen".
  • Veho @ Veho:
Here we have ketoprofen that used to be prescription-only because of the risk of toxic dosages, but then they halved the dose per pill and sell them in bottles of six pills apiece instead of twenty and it doesn't need a prescription any more. Yes you can buy more than one bottle but people simply don't.
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
Usually accidentally overdose of ibuprofen here is from people taking like cold medicine then ibuprofen for a headache and the combination is over what they need
