Gold Points Towards a Nintendo Switch Online Membership... Is It Really Possible?

It's been a little while since I posted here. Since I'm not unavailable yet, I thought I'd ask about this:

Look closely at the bottom portion: "...Up to $6 towards games or Nintendo Switch Online membership..." I've never heard of this until I got this via email. Can somebody please confirm if this is possible?

When you make a purchase for a game it asks if you want to use your gold points as a discount. I guess that's also what happens when purchasing online membership. I mean, I don't see why it should be any different.

I can't actually confirm this, though, as I'm all paid up for the year already.

I am currently enjoying one month's free online sub bought using only gold coins. I have also in the past purchased a few cheap indie games from the eshop using only gold coins.
