The Adventures of a Dumpster TV

Hey, remember when I had to upgrade my TV because the backlight has decided to commit sudoku? Well, I just happened to be gifted another dead TV, with the intention of having it repaired, but since the damage was beyond any kind of economic repairs, it was just left on my desk to rot while my benefactor chose to buy a new one instead. This gave me an idea... What if I take the completely incompatible backlight out, slash it into tiny pieces...

...solder it all together and firmly affix it to the frame of my old TV at the more-or-less correct spots...

...make new openings in the old white back panel and patch the old ones...

...and just put the sucker back together...?

Stupid like a fox! :vul1: Spare TV, happy me! This will do nicely in the bedroom as a secondary display in the house.

I tried doing this with those cheap led strips and they werent bright enough. Then i cracked the screen when taking it back apart. Looks like you did a nice job.

Yeah, I was thinking about using 12V LED strips from the hardware store, and I've seen that done successfully on a monitor that previously had a tube backlight, but the polarizer was really thick in this guy and I figured that if I have a corpse of a TV already, I may as well gut it for components. It was a major pain to insulate because for some inexplicable reason the backs of the "new" strips are connected to the positive terminal, so I had to insulate it like crazy in order to avoid a short (although admittedly the short may have been the result of me cutting the strips and scraping on new terminals, who knows). With some luck they won't be overheating, but at 2W a pop I don't think that's a major concern. I used some thermal adhesive tape on the bottom just for peace of mind either way.

I was thinking this deserves some 6 million dollar man theme, however this is more like 6 million rupee man but it seems the BBC don't like fun and it does not appear to be online these days.

I want a handheld gaming system with a tablet sized screen, like a 8 or10" screen, with controllers that can detach like the Switch.

I don't see the buzz about a square screen personally. I think there will be a review on the site within a few weeks though if you are interested.

I've put down the money on the Odin 2 Mini since I just love that Vita form factor. Loved the power of the Odin 2 but the size always put me off, this one seems exactly what I've been wanting.
  • K3Nv2 @ K3Nv2:
I don't care about the square screen it's just nice to hold something you don't have to stretch your arms a foots length
  • K3Nv2 @ K3Nv2:
All these things expecting to be super huge is overrated just run a type c cable to your TV if you want a big display or in my case screen mirror it

On the go tho I meant, I use my 10" tablet and a Bluetooth controller for retro gaming while sitting on my porch or on long car rides sometimes. Easier on my eyes than the Switch screen.
  • K3Nv2 @ K3Nv2:
My point is we already have enough shit with big displays having something pocketable with up to ps2 would be fine on the go

Ken unless the games are made for that screen size most suck on a screen that size... Having a square screen and being brighter and higher res helps but it's not a cure all, text is tiny bullets are tiny, your.... Well lol
