Will Nintendo Jump Ship from the Switch?

This thought popped up in my head when discussing the Switch with my friend.

If the OLED is truly the last of the Nintendo Switch family, or we won't be getting a new revision until the far future-
Then it will have to compete with not only last generation's consoles, but now the new generation's consoles.
Honestly, I can't see the Switch competing in the market.
This can very well be an incorrect or misguided statement, but I feel like the only thing that has been carrying the Switch has been scalpers harvesting PS5's and Series X's.
I truly believe that if it weren't for the scalpers, the Switch's sales wouldn't be anywhere near as good as they are now.

With that being said, I wonder if we'll be seeing an entirely different console in the next coming year or two.
We've seen this pattern before, with Nintendo revising models of their handhelds before moving on to the next big device.
It's been 4 years since the Switch released and console lifespans usually only last between 5 - 6 years.
Once we get stable restocks of the new consoles, I seriously think the Switch's popularity will begin to plummet.

I feel like they've really shot themselves in the foot by initially restricting the Switch's potential and then coming out with the OLED.
Which then paves a way for the Steam Deck to succeed the Switch in areas it fails.
There will be no other reason to have a Nintendo Switch other than to play first party games on it.
It's affordable, yes. But it's the worst way to play most third party games, it's getting overshadowed by literally everything else now, the novelty of a handheld/console hybrid is wearing thin and the newest model has disappointed so many people.

This is why I personally think Nintendo is going to jump ship, in terms of the Switch's support and they'll push out a completely new console entirely.
But that's just me, this is just my theory on the topic.
I dunno how sales and such work.
Nintendo will get their money either way, thanks to their undying support from their playerbase and the fact that, again, you can only play Nintendo games on their system.
Just feels like they'd better make a move before the Switch generally fades into obscurity like the Wii U did.

As always, I'd love to hear your thoughts!

I would hope not, and I can't see them fazing out something like the Switch that has been breaking milestones ever since launch, albeit at a slower rate now. There's enough support, both from first-party and third-party developers working on and innovating for the Switch so even if they did try to go for a "New" version like with the 3DS with enhanced visuals and restricted games due to performance, there would still be the people on the "old" Switch, since there is a couple tens of millions out there now being played.

I'd honestly welcome a "New" Switch as would most, since better graphics is a nice thing to see, but that has never been Nintendo's strong suit for their consoles, it's better left to modders and emu teams that make games like BOTW an amazing experience compared to its native console.

Yeah the Switch is doing fine, sure it can't have the same quality games as the newer consoles but it has exclusives that keep it in it's own lane

With 89 million sales even before the release of OLED Switch, I don't see Nintendo changing course any time soon. They'll milk Switch for several more years yet, and eventually release a backward-compatible Switch 2 (which probably still won't measure up to Steam Deck). Nintendo has their target audience locked down, and since Steam Deck is portable PC, they are still technically alone in the hybrid console space being that neither Microsoft nor Sony seems interested in challenging them. The greater the sales numbers, the less likely they are to take risks with future hardware and software.

I feel like a good part of what keeps the Switch alive is the nostalgia factor, not only from Nintendo but also from third parties. The Switch has ports and remakes of countless classic games, many of which are either exclusives or only out on Switch and Windows. There’s also the fact that it’s considerably cheaper than the other modern consoles, which is unquestionably a big part of Nintendo’s strategy ever since the Wii kept them afloat. All in all while I do think that there’s a good chance that Nintendo is working on a successor to the Switch, jumping ship just doesn’t seem to be too close to the horizon.

Nintendo would be crazy to kill Switch when it is selling so well. Having a real "New Switch" as in a next generation console would be crazy. They have never this kind of foolishness and I highly doubt they would ever be this stupid. Sony and Microsoft has no choice as they have each other. Nintendo is alone in a very comfortable space.

They won't for a while. The switch is the best selling console right now and greedy nintendo won't bother trying to sway away from that. I think Nintendo is confident enough with its first party games collection that they don't care if developers won't target the switch cause its lack of power.

If I were to bet, Nvidia or whoever Nintendo decides to make their next chip is working hard on something very efficient like Apple's M1 chip. AMD seems to be working on it with their APU in the Steam Deck.

They probably have something in the lab since a long time ago. It would be inconceivable for a financially healthy company like Nintendo not to have something in the works. Should the Switch start to fail in the market they will release the new Switch.

Literally what Tom said, the Switch barely competes with Xbox and PlayStation. There are many people out there with an XBOne and a Switch or a PS4 and a Switch, but very few with an XBOne and a PS4 and no Switch.

3rd party support will continue to be excellent as long as Switch business continue to be healthy for them. Caring about how powerful the Switch hardware is is missing the big picture, every hardware has it's limitation. If that was the consideration Switch won't have any 3rd party support from day one.

they don't care about competing with the big boys they just want to remain using dated old hardware and being left behind in the dust. oh and they never made a proper console this gen it's a handheld that can plug into your tv built for casuals and kids :P
