is highschool hard?

so school is coming back ,
and for me, it'll be highschool .

meeting new people ,
new teachers ,
different classes ,
and a whole new schedule .

i'm pretty nervous about end of semester exams mainly ...
since they make it sound freakin HUGE .
it being the end of the semester makes it even scarier ...
just thinking about how much info they could've thrown into it ...
after half a school year .

so now i am wondering ,
the opinions of other tempers out there ,
who are in highschool ,
and just flew through their first year in highschool .

I started highschool last thursday.

Well, I think it was easier, with only 4blocks/subjects per day. each block runs for 80mins.
Well that means there wont be much pressure when the finals come.

High school, eh?

Well, there's nothing radically different about it when compared to Jr. High. You've got your 8 to 10 periods, different teachers, etc... The exams are large, and they do require studying. But most teachers will devote an entire week to preparation for their exam. After all, they don't want you to fail! Other wise they'd get fired. :creep:

Keep in mind that subtleties in high school will vary from school to school. But all in all, there's really no serious changes to the formula. Just relax, work hard, and take it day by day. ;)

Well, I'm about to start my third, if that counts. I was nervous too, but it's really not that bad once you get used to the way everything is. Naturally classes will be a little harder, but it's supposed to be that way. Something wouldn't be right if the next grade was as easy as or easier than the last.

In my school final exams at the end of each semester count as 10% of the semester grade for that class. (25% in a few classes) Basically the meat of the grade comes from work from the three marking periods, but the final can completely screw you if you've been slacking off and do bad, or it can save you from failure if you slack and do great on it. Obviously it's better to get a good grade on the marking periods AND the final. And, of course, your school's final exams could be quite a bit different from mine's.

Really, though, it seems scary right now, but after a week or two you'll probably like it better than you ever liked middle school. I know I have. Also, a lot of freshmen (including me) make the mistake of not trying very hard and doing poorly during their freshman year. It's definitely tempting to just not do work or try very hard, but for your own sake you should get as good of a GPA as you possibly can. It'll help later when you start thinking about college, to get your cumulative GPA high.

I'm going into 8th grade. I'm actually excited for school to start, been really bored lately. Other then finals and end of semester exams it shouldn't be too hard.

mind i say ,
i ran through Elementary School all the way to Grade 8 .

my average at Grade 8 was about an 87% or 86% . it was a bigger improvement compared to Grade 7 which was an 79% -_- .
i felt a difference ,
spent more time thinking and going through my work .
rather than rushing through it or just skipping the work .

it felt nice to actually finish my work properly,
but this year, it looks like i have to work even harder .
i need to learn to study,
that's something i have trouble doing .
tips anyone?
i was recommended to have 1 binder for a class then a notebook for your notes .
so when exams come around, it's just study that notebook and maybe a few worksheets from the binder . but obviously you'd know , only use a notebook/binder for the majors / important subjects . so geography/history, science, english, math etc.

It depends on you yourself how hard it is, really. I listened to what everyone told me at first, you know: "Bring a binder for everything", "Always take notes", "Eat a balanced breakfast", etc. In the end, I realized all of that is rather unnecessary and I. Just pay attention, really. Unless you really want to take notes.

It's easy. Make good friends and don't worry about being cool. Be social and go to events. Join a club or two. Join a sport also.

If you take all of the classes that might be out of your reach, then yes it can be hell.
You'll learn early on not to push yourself so hard if that ever happens.
Otherwise it's a great time in your life.

A GRADUATE'S GUIDE TO HIGH SCHOOL SUCCESS

•Friends

- Talk to people and you'll make friends rather quickly, they're just as lost as you are.
- People are always drawn to the one who speaks up first, provided they don't act stupid and have a likable attitude.

- There will be occasions when friends will have parties or some other kind of social event, these are prime times to be social.
- Drinking and getting into "drugs" is not recommended during this time. It can interfere with school and being "clean" is not a negative label any longer.

- Being different can be a good thing, but can also be destructive. Let people to get to know you on a basic level before springing some things on them. Then you can be as different as you like.

- Having a good sense of humor will help a lot. Make some jokes, but keep them safe. Offending people is not good.

- Good hygiene... HAVE IT.

• Grades

- As for classes, try to stay on a teacher's good side as long as you don't suck up.
- Pay attention in class and you'll do fine in the subjects. Take notes as precisely as you can and study a bit for tests. Nothing too extreme though.
- Don't be afraid to ask for help. Grasping the material is top priority and will put you where you need to be.

Do your best in class and try to be social. People will form their own opinions on you, just try to allow them to see you positively for the most part.

Here are some factors that determined the difficulty of high school for me:
1. Teachers - A crappy or lazy teacher can really affect your will to do work and your ability to understand the material.
2. Class selection - You should have a good balance of rigorous and easy classes, while keeping an eye on required subjects.
3. Procrastination - Sometimes I wouldn't even start writing an essay until the night before it was due. Try not to do it too much. Also, you will probably get an essay assignment every month. Always read the material.

The most important thing is to pay attention. Studying and taking notes isn't really necessary for every test or quiz if you learn the material.

Just pay attention in class. Take necessary notes of terms or formulas you don't understand clearly. Also don't hesitate to ask for clarification. Sure other immature kids may laugh at you for not understanding but really, people who never ask question to clear thing up is bound to have a difficult year (if they care that is...).

Just hang in there and keep yourself organize. Take things one at a time. And be sure you know your priorities. Oh and good luck! :D

I just finished my Freshman year of high school, and i have to say that

1. meeting new people is fun. its always good to make new friends, and plus if you have old friends that makes the loneliness experience a whole lot better.

2. Having new teachers is no different than having old teachers. they are there to do their job. if you find a teacher too rough or have any issues just consult your counselor and get it fixed/changed.

3. As long as you pick classes you will enjoy. its gonna be good. and if you dont like a class, hey its just for a semester right??

4. Dont worry about upper classmen. usually when you mind your buisness and dont do anything out of the ordinary, they will leave you alone.

Oh and about the final exams. as long as you pay attention. take notes when needed. your good to go. they make it a big deal at my school too. but those 3 days flew by quick!

How do your classes work?
Like, every class in one day, or some other system?
Because the system my school used worked amazingly, and made highschool a lot easier. But there are still far too many schools that do the retarded "Every class, every day" system. It makes highschool a lot harder then it should be.

Best advice I can give is DON'T SLEEP IN CLASS!
Especially don't do it a lot.
You might get famous for it >_> ahem.
Or if you have an awesome teacher like my Gr.8 German teacher, you'll wake up very suddenly, very wetly (yes, she dumped water on sleeping people in her class).
Excluding math class and you're good at math. Veeery boring class when you finish your work early.

Oh, and get a graphing calculator that has games.
Calculator tetris saved me from a very boring math class where my teacher didn't allow electronics other then calculators.

Lastly, Grade 8, 9 and 10 are all easy peasy. So enjoy those years.

EDIT: Don't run around school like a moron. Once I hit grade 12, I wasn't above shoving annoying ass grade 8 and 9s out of my way. Same for standing in the middle of a hallway with your friends, blocking it. That was a good way to end up on the floor, or wall, or against a locker.
Right, oh, and don't suddenly stop while walking in a busy hallway. That's a good way to be shoved unintentionally from behind.

It's difficult for me to comment since I'm straight A's and whatnot, but here's my advice.

1. Never wing a long project. If you try, it's either the quality will be poor, or it will just be really hard to finish it on time.

2. Try to figure out what each teacher would want. If a teacher is nice, he/she will probably be okay if you take one more day to finish your project, but if she/he is mean, then do it early.

3. Ask help from others. The most efficient way to finish work sometimes is to do it in a group. Other people could help you. If you can, meet after school at a friend's house or at the library to study or do homework.

4. Participate in school activities. You can't just sit by after school doing nothing. Join a sport or help on the school play or whatever. It gets you more friends and sometimes even gets you credit.

5. Choose the classes that interest you. In my personal opinion, it's better to choose something you excel in than something with a nice teacher or what other people like. Choose something that you would like.

6. Study for a while everyday. While you don't need to study everything, study something. It helps, especially if there's a pop quiz or something like that.

well if ican pass highschool i bet all of gbatemp could too i barely passed on my last year i was on the f to c zone

whoops forgot to say good luck to you all i aint goin ta school till January(college)

It's really not that difficult unless you simply refuse to do homework and study for tests, or if you are an extreme procrastinator. Semester exams (aka finals) aren't really that hard. It's just a summary of what you learned over the quarter/semester so if you've been paying attention, doing homework, and doing well on tests, you'll probably get a good grade as long as you study and review your material. This year's my last year of high school, and I can sincerely say that I definitely won't miss it. Probably because I feel trapped. In university I won't have my parents breathing down my neck 24/7. Good luck, you'll have fun, just make sure you don't be too shy and don't overload yourself with AP or advanced classes that you can barely handle; you'll hate your life.

umm... it goes 2 semesters, 4 periods . 3 are full periods and 1 period = 3 sections . 2 sections are a period , 1 section is lunch .

i'm reading a lot about paying attention, and getting notes .
i need to learn to sleep earlier , that's for sure .
i am gonna try to drop procrastinating too by at least a bare minimum
and probably lower my gaming time .

aren't graphic calculators $100+?
and what are they used for anyway ?

I'm in my 1st year of highschool. Not really hard, and it's fun because I meet new friends and have more gimmicks with them in school ;)

I'm the type of student who can get A's on assignments and tests without a good work ethic or any studying (always exceptions. Plus, I'm terrible at writing essays). As cool as that would make anyone feel, I have to stop as soon as I can. A bad work ethic gives you hell in college. If you're going to take any AP's (not sure what they're called in Canada, but they're college classes), do all of your work given to you earlier than the night before it's due (unless it's obviously homework due the very next day). Try to have and create a good work ethic.

Get into the discussion of your classes, it'll help you to actually learn the material instead of memorize it as if you were a robot. Get involved in school to keep it fresh, because it get's incredibly boring sometimes.

Be social, but don't be stupid. Someone else already expanded on this, so I won't say anymore.

Ask questions! Always ask if you don't understand something!

EDIT: I'm a junior (third year) in high school. My classes (besides Woodshop) are challenging, but very doable.
