1st Person Shooters

Can someone please explain why everyone seems to be obsessed with them, and why the market is saturated with them?

I honestly dont like/enjoy them. Im not good at them and i dont find much fun in super "realistic" games (that being realistic graphics like being in the real world).

Will someone please explain this to me?

Ps im going to try to not get too defensive and im not going to shoot anyone down, so dont come in here and flame me cause that isnt going to get anything done.
I want unbiased and intelligent conversation. Leave your fanboyism out of it.

Well they are popular because they are very fun competitive games, which you get a thrill from of shooting one of your friends in the head.
Anyway asking that is like asking 'why are action/horror/fantasy games so popular'

TL;DR thread.

Play anything by Valve (L4D, HL) instead of shitty casual FPS's popular right now.

Edit: Also Timesplitters

Borderlands was pretty fun this gen. And like Prowler said, anything by Valve works.

Halo Reach is decently fun if you play it on a casual level.

It's probably a machismo thing.

FPS games aren't my favourite genre but I don't universally dislike them. I find the ones I enjoy are the ones that are essentially single player games. The ones that are clearly designed around multiplayer just seem pointless and lazy.

FPS suck.
They are only so flooded in the market because the majority of buyers are kids, or adults for their kids.
Right now, any kid that doesn't have the latest CoD or Battlefield or Command and bullshit or [censored] fortress(mainly CoD) is seen as the "uncool" kid.
"You don't have CoD? Wow, like EVERYONE has it! Why don't you?"

So, since there is some retarded ideology among kids about being cool by having CoD and similar games, they are the most bought games.

That's pretty broad generalization there.

And only real nerds play Team Fortress 2, if that was one of them you listed. Seriously, I see a bunch of guys talk about CoD and shit but if I drop TF2 they're like "What?" Cool kids nowadays =/= PC gamers. And don't say the PS3 or 360 versions of TF2 because they're horrible and no one plays them.

Actually "cool kids" don't really game much :P
They rather go on facebook :P

I will happily read this blog post trying to figure out the same thing, BortzANATOR.
I find them so boring and dull to be honest .
Also, I do like Half Life 2, but I can barely play it because it gives me horrible motion sickness.

He was talking about gamers not chavs even though chavs only play CoD, I wouldn't consider them gamers.

Thought he was mentioning the aforementioned "bro gamers" who just sit at home and play CoD and Halo and nothing else really. TF2 players aren't really bro gamers.

Currently in this generation Multiplayer is pretty much dominant, FPS's are currently so popular because of this factor (it's easy to spin out an FPS title with multiplayer that people will keep going back to and then oh heeeeyyyyy look it's a map pack more monies please!

This is especially true on consoles, more so in western gaming recently I've been finding that RPG's are completely lacking especially multiplayer ones and especially free ones (console based) until somethings GOOD comes out like this, FPSs will remain dominant.

Although there have been simply amazing RPGs in western games this generation. Mass Effect as a series, Fallout 3 and New Vegas, Elder Scrolls IV, etc. And I always felt RPGs were meant to be single player affairs, I just never saw what would be fun with your friend clicking through the menus in battles instead of you. Action RPGs can be pretty fun and I still find a game like Dynasty Warriors 4 (which I do really like) to be fun multiplayer affairs.

*ahem* well, let me try my best to explain

these games (mostly CoD, nothing else is near as mainstream) are just as much about the adrenaline and fast-paced encounters as they are the social experience
Actually "cool kids" don't really game much :P
They rather go on facebook :P
this is total BS, they both play CoD casually with their friends on xbox and they go on facebook when they should be sleeping
Come on man. Seriously?

2) The argument that FPS's are all repetitive and dull is pretty much bullcrap. Most major FPS series have something that truly defines them. For example Battlefield is focused more on "real time" war, where it's slow-paced and realistic. Call of Duty is very fast paced, and features a lot of customization. Halo has a deep story and tons of features that allow user-made content. The list goes on.

I can accept this one. Good job.
However. To someone who doesnt really care about FPSs none of those mean anything to me. Especially if i cant get past number 1.
So from a broader perspective, the generalization (that is my own opinion) is exactly that, FPSs are bland and boring.

To someone who doesn't really care about RPGs, none of the differentiating characteristics of RPGs mean anything to me. Especially if I just don't like the whole genre. They are all basically the same game which I will call "RPGs" and I don't like any of them, they are all repetitive grinding with a bunch of whiny spikey haired kids who I don't give a shit about with overpowered bosses.
I imagine it's the gameplay and the rush it gives you. More recently I'd say online has been central in the dominace on FPS. I can't say I'm all that much into FPS, or games with a first person perspective. In fact the game I've finished with a FPP have been Portal, Half Life 2 and SMT: Strange Journey.

However I am a fan of Third Person Shooters, because I just find them fun and shooting shit up is just fun.
Online is very much the focus of CoD, there are tons of kids who buy a game and don't touch anything except the multiplayer. They could care less about stories or any of that, they just want to get on multiplayer and play with their friends. Your different opinions on FPSs and TPSs baffle me, u like shooting stuff up in third person but in first person it loses all of the fun?

It's all in the perspective, for some reason I struggle to get my head around playing in first person where as with TPS, my head can comprehend it. I know it makes no sense.

It seems that FPS are also very popular with the un-healthy gamers.
You know, the ones who swear at the screen all the time and get mad cause they got killed :P

I can do that with any game, so ha!

I kinda wish the market would level out. I mean, there are WAY too many FPS's around now. Don't get me wrong, I don't hate FPS's, but I care very little for the common kind. I only really care for the one's with great stories that let me immerse myself in the role of that games character. For example, I like The Darkness, which is easily my favorite FPS of all time. I played through it three times, because the story was SO good. I did not like Halo, Call of Duty, etc., because after you played one installment, for me anyways, every other installment feels like a rehash of the same kind of story that lacks character depth and interesting twists. For example, "Russia is wanting to launch a nuke, you must go with your squad and stop it" (this is not a specific example) is the whole story for most war games, which isn't really interesting at all. Anyways, that was my opinion/rant/what have you.

EDIT: Wow, I really veered away from what I was originally going to post about. So, yeah, I think that there should be about an equal amount of games in all genres instead of one dominating, but what can you do?

same could be said for almost every genre

Nothing wrong with FPS, I enjoy them. Half-Life 1 and 2, episode 1, and episode 2, I enjoy them all. Not a fan for war games really, I just like the unusual stuff, like Team Fortress 2, and Bioshock the most.
