My experience with the 3DS

Sooo... I just went to the 3DS hands-on booth at Westfield London earlier and I had a blast. Spent at least 1 hour there. It was awesome! They had most of the launch games up for demo, and also Zelda! ^_^ Oh, and to top it off with hot girls around. So nice that they are all "3DS-savvy", hearing them have conversations with games and whatnot. It's also cool to see their smiling faces, along with the other people, whilst playing the 3DS. Since I'm writing this, I might as well make my short (p)reviews on the games I've played (in order).
 • Augmented Reality - I've actually played this twice, with the first one being a secret demo at a HMV store. It's decent, but I don't see how people make it look big. In fact, the girl who was hosting this minigame told me that this comes with the 3DS so it's enough for you to be entertained. This obviously opens up a whole new realm of possibilities. Revival of Mosquito game from Nokia phones?
 • Pilotwings - hmmm...this was my first 3DS game and I'm assuming that it's my eyes to blame for this one. I kinda liked the controls and stuff, but the 3DS effect didn't really catch on. I've tried every single possibly angle to view and I was only able to view it as "3D when you don't put on your glasses". I know YOU DON'T NEED GLASSES but it was like that kind of effect. Then again, maybe because my eyes needed a little warming up before seeing the full effect.
 • Steel Diver - awesome! I had difficulties with controls but it will only take a litle getting used to. I keep getting water punctures :P Again, the 3D effect didn't catch on :(
 • Street Fighter - I am so glad I pre-ordered this game! Awesomeness! The controls feel different (and for some reason the NPC keeps getting the First Attack and I'll only get to attack him when my life is only about 15-20%. Claw hand required? Also, the 3D effect started to come in! The characters are like on a second layer with the background as the first. Also, the character select screen feels like it's right on you!
 • Zelda - YEBAAHHH!!! I managed to play the part of the Deku Tree up to where you have to dive with a flaming stem to go through the web. Everything was glamorous! It felt quite different as I played the PAL version of OoT on my Wii for like a year, and that version has a bad framerate. Anyway, everything was glamorous. Can't wait for it!
 • Resident Evil - I tried the "kill as many as you can within 2 minutes" and when you kill an enemy, it adds up 10 seconds to the time. Didn't really see the 3D effect, but it was cool though. Never played that good as I suck at FPS majorly, but I had good fun!
 • Lego Star Wars III - hehe, seeing as I spent an hour in that booth, I can say I spent half of it playing Lego Star Wars! I'm a massive fan of the Lego games and seeing as I've 1000G'ed the Lego games on Xbox, I couldn't pass up and tried completing the demo level...or is it? It didn't feel like a demo because I played that long and wanted to finish. Had a chat with the girl accompanying the 3DS and she even asked me to keep her updated because I'm taking that long. I just left because it doesn't seem like it's gonna end. Felt the 3D effect and it was awesome! Yoda and the Troopers look really sharp. Oh and the framerate is comparable to the console versions of the LEGO games, which is a big plus!
If you're a Brit and in London, you can go check it out yourself. The event runs from today until the 13th March. It's awesome!!! Wish they had Rayman 3D though as I've pre-ordered it and wanted to see if I've made the right choice.

EDIT: Aaaghhh! I just remembered someone said "Dead or Alive" and I remembered Dead or Alive Dimensions and I just looked it up and it was 18+, meaning it was in the 18+ booth. I missed it! :(

EDIT: Games I haven't played:
 • Dead or Alive Dimensions
 • Nintendogs + Cats - it was full so I didn't get the chance to play it.
 • Lego Pirates of the Caribbean - kinda meh but I haven't played it. I only said it because Lego SW kinda got me tired. Lego Fever?
 • Ridge Racer 3D - I really REALLY wanted to try this one. It intrigues me. And I know for a fact that racing games WILL look better in 3D.

Well, from what I've seen from other 3DS-trying threads, it seems that the 3DS's 3D is easy to adjust to. I wonder why you had problems with it.
Also, it's a bit strange how SOME games' 3D effect isn't easily adjustable? I mean, we're talking about Nintendo here and they wouldn't sell the system with a flaw like THAT. Were you wearing your prescription glasses? (If you wear them)
I'm glad to see Street Fighter is good, as I have that preordered and the last SF game I played was on the Sega DC like 6 years ago. :P
I want to see reviews of Nintendogs + Cats :( as I have that preordered too.
It's awesome to hear OoT is good as I intend on getting it soon.
RE just really doesn't catch my interest. I don't know why. I haven't even tried a RE game.
I love Lego games too!!!
I've played some seriously good one.
Anyway, you made me more and more interested in the 3DS. It's coming out in 17 days!!!!!!!!!!

Hehe, glad to hear that :) Well I don't wear glasses and putting the depth slider in the middle didn't really feel adequate for all of the games I've played. For all of them, the 3D was set to max and it was fine for me (except for the first two games where the 3D effect didn't really apply to me).

The Dogs + Cats booth was FULL. It's a mix of everyone wants to try it and it's the nearest booth near the entrance. Pilotwings was next to it (my first game) and it didn't have that much attention :(

OoT is like the perfect package! I can't really wait for it. Master Quest!!!!!!!

I'm also glad that by the time the 3DS comes to my home, all my courseworks and exams for uni will be finished so it's gonna be game time! It's gonna keep me occupied while waiting so hooray?

I'm glad to hear that about OoT. I've been dieing to play and have been stuck between going to the N64 and picking it up or waiting to for the gloried 3DS release... 3DS it'll be then ^_^

How were the games at a graphical stand point? Huge improvement from the Nintendo DS?

A big step up. Like I said about LEGO Star Wars, it felt like it was the console version and not the DS version. The framerate was smooth. Heck, all of the games were comparable to the console versions (SF, OoT, Resident Evil, Pro Evo). I didn't put a review on Pro Evo because I sucked at it and I'd rather not say "I passed the ball to the other team's goalkeeper" :/ The graphics were awesome though and again, smooth and crisp.

I'd say a really big step up, except for maybe Steel Diver, which is quite "pixelated" but not noticeable.

Didn't really notice much fingerprints after I've played each 3DS'es. I haven't noticed smudges on the buttons when I played an extensive session of Lego SW and it was the black model. For the blue, it seems that my fingerprints go away suddenly :P

Don't take my word for it though. I'm not sure they've fixed it as any glossy surface is bound to have fingerprints and dust and stuff. I never really noticed any marks when I played on the 3DS systems. My hands were quite dry at that time and they never really become oily that much. Doesn't mean it's fingerprint/dust-proof

How would you say the 3D on Lego Star Wars is if you were to compare it to the DS version? I'm on the fence on this one. I liked Lego Star Wars on the DS, but I'm not sure if I want to get Clone Wars for the 3DS instead of just DS or Wii. Really hedges on how good the 3D is in it.

I'd say the effect is only basic. Nothing really special. I only played one level so there might be other levels that showcase awesome 3D effects. I'm still confused about the use of the bottom screen. At first I thought you had to swipe when you have to use the force or to plant bombs (as a Stormtrooper). An arrow appears when it happens but I still don't know what it means.

Oh and the epic Star Wars intro in 3D is really, really cool! I was smiling the whole time while I was reading it. I remember trying to find the right angle to correctly view it in 3D and I ended up having the 3DS straight up :P
did it feel solid in your hand (as in the buttons) or flimsy and plastic like.
Well I mentioned that I've tried the 3DS twice. The first one was at HMV in Oxford St. and it was basically a secret demo, where they require you to ask the guys at the till if you can try out the 3DS then they take you to an aisle and the only demo they had was the AR mystery card. The 3DS there didn't have security locks or anything attached to it. What I can say is that it's very ergonomic to me. On paper it looks thicker than the DSi but it felt really compact to me. The buttons were easy to press, the slider was easy to...slide, the analog stick is very very comfy. It's really sturdy. I kinda found the Select/Home/Start buttons a little off-putting. Not that easy to press but it'll take a little getting used to, since all Nintendo handhelds usually had those located at the side rather than at the center. Also take note that I only had 15 minutes or so with this 3DS. I did manage to get to the main menu but not that deep.

For the second experience, they had large, square-ish blocks at the back, occupied by the game slot attached to a security lock wire-thingy so that made the 3DS'es more bulky.
