Need to break ipod touch homebutton

Here is my story. I HORRIBLY cracked my ipod touch 4g. I really need a new one. So i still have the limited 1 year defult warrenty with it. Could i break my ipods home button and tell them the button is defective would they give me a new one? And if the answer is yes to the new one how can i break my home button?

They won't replace your device for free if it has a cracked screen.
They better give you a new or fixed phone because you broke your home button? There's a word for that type of thought, but I can't remember what it is.

Mind showing us a pic of your iPod to see how does the screen look like at the moment?

Recently a coworker took her smashed iPhone 4 into an Apple Store for a fix, fully expecting to pay. She was told that the first fix from accidental breakage was free, anything after was £130. Actually it wasn't even a fix, it was a full replacement they were going to give her (and probably fix the phone up and resell as new)

I hear really mixed stuff about Apple and replacements some good, some bad. I can tell you this much. If you break your home button they'll still blame that on you since the screen is clearly cracked and that was most definitely your fault so that's the most likely cause for the home button damage. My advice: Take it to an Apple Store to ask how much it would cost to repair. If they give you a price save up that money, cause there's no way they're gonna give you a free repair. If they say they'll give you a replacement then great!

The fraud itself, I don't really care about (hell I wanted to swap my DS's insides with my brother's and then have him return it for a brand new one, since I'm not pro enough to swap the L/R buttons myself).
How do you fix a broken screen on an iTouch?

It doesn't really make sense to jump to THAT conclusion first when it seems so unlikely to be do-able.

You can fix a screen on a itouch, a simple google search would have told you that -_-

There's videos and tuts all on how to fix a cracked itouch screen.

Too lazy to google.
Does it require getting a new screen? I don't see how it'd be possible to fix without replacing the broken screen.
Yes, how else you going to fix it?

Replacing the screen on the 4th generation iPod touch isn't really a very user-friendly job. It requires a heat gun to get the glass off the device. (If I recall correctly from the iFixIt teardown. )

I say go for it.
No harm in trying, not like they're gonna take it away from you if they refuse. Absolutely nothing to lose, and something to gain.

I've seen worse happen from one falling from a desk to a carpeted floor. Must have hit in just the right spot.
Sweet fuck, what did you do?
Throw it at the floor?
It feel on my stone floor.
Is the metal on the bottom of that iPod...bent in? How hard did you drop that thing?
Eh, this. I doubt you can say it is defective from the looks of it.

Do you have to break the home button if you have warranty the broken screen can be fixed without causing further damage.
I don't know how apple warranty's work so i could be wrong.

If I were to break it, I would open the ipod itself and de-solder the connector from the home button to the motherboard (or atleast loosen the connection so it no longer works) That would be the best bet, cause then it would look like bad soldering on their part and they should replace it.

They may catch onto you though, and even if you send it in like that they may just fix the button and leave the screen cracked.

Knowing apple though they'll just replace it, they did when I had problems with my mac book air, they moved the hard drive to the replacement and just gave me a new machine (bar the hard drive) and that was for a faulty keyboard

Im not sure if the home button is soldered on, it was just a guess, usually (and im going from controllers etc) theres usually a pressure pad that pushes onto a connector on a mini motherboard, if you just remove the pressure pad (or move it slightly so it doesnt connect properly) that should do you well
I was thinking more along the lines of not opening my ipod.
But you're willing to do everything else to break it?

Listen buddy. I broke my screen. If your not going to post anything that will help me get a new ipod then don't post at all [/jerk]

Or you can not be an arrogant asshole.

Yes, but you can also use a hair dryer.

That crack is and isn't bad.

At least the crack isn't on the screen area itself. So it doesn't get in the way of viewing. But oly shit, that's a bad crack :P

Good luck at the Apple store
