I need to ditch Windows 10 Home ASAP

Edit: I settled on Solus with KDE5. Thanks everyone for the comments!

I think it's time to nuke this installation, but for real this time.

I thought that I completely nuked every autoupdater, but I was so wrong. It turns out that a service named osrss was the culprit of the random small updates, which seems to have installed an update 1-2 days ago, because the CPU is constantly generating heat WHILE IDLE (it didn't do this before), and some diagnostic programs say that there is a really high interrupt latency. I also had to uninstall Nvidia drivers, because since this hidden update it was causing high CPU inside System, and a lot of interrupts (it's not normal that interrupts take up 1.2% to 5% CPU (to put that in perspective, a single core being 100% used is read as 8.33% CPU usage)). And considering that the temperatures are again in the 34C range with nights being 20-24C, it's critical for my own health that I do someting against the excess heat generation, because I don't have an aircon to remove the heat before next early morning comes (it's still too warm outside at midnight).

There's definitely something wrong, because at -135mV undervolt the CPU comsumed 2W idle before the hidden update. Now at -135mV the CPU TDP is around 6-8W, and even at -210mV it doesn't go below 5W, and there is a noticable heat generation at only 1.13% CPU usage :/

So I wonder, what OS should I install? I'm open to suggestions, but I'd love to hear the pros and cons paired to it.

I was thinking of LTSB 2016 (1607), but it's very old, requires 3rd-party audio processor software to get "Mono audio" working (because it's missing from this version), and the Precision Touchpad drivers are wonky, and has a bug where the cursor snaps back to place if you move the cursor too quickly. On the other hand, its gaming performance is comparable to Windows 8.0, the updates aren't worth disabling (I noticed ACTUAL improvements after installing all updates as opposed to 1709 Home, where each update BROKE something instead of fixing it (performance fixes and bug improvements, y'know)), opening a new tab in Firefox doesn't hardlock the system for one second (yes, it's definitely a hardlock, because even the audio stutters), and the performance is just generally comparable to Windows 8.0, and is really good.

I was also thinking of re-installing macOS Mojave, hoping that if I install it on SSD then it won't take nine million years to boot (on a real MacBook Pro it boots into the login screen in ~12s from HDD). It works a-okay, but OpenGL doesn't work properly and crashes a lot on Mojave, wine is buggy on Mojave, the backlight dies for ~4mins at boot, and it takes an abysmally long time to boot, putting itself to shame by ancient computers. The only thing not working is Bluetooth and WiFi, both of which I rarely use, so the lack of them isn't the end of the world. Android NDIS via USB doesn't work either, but that's only an issue when I'm not at home.

I also tried Linux, but driver support for my hardware is terrible other than Intel drm itself, and Ethernet doesn work (which is an unexpected surprise as opposed to wireless not working) which is a dealbreaker for me, and let's not even talk about that nouveau crashes X, and the proprietary driver crashes the KERNEL, so I don't have any chance of ever using NVENC on Linux, which is another dealbreaker (to be honest, QuickSynth is shit, it can't do 1080p60, nor 720p60, and it can barely do 480p30). I'd use Linux as a last resort unless the driver issues can be somehow fixed without instability.

At this point I'll try almost anything if I can reduce the idle TDP to 2W. I really need to cut down on the heat generation as much as I can as soon as possible, because I don't want to play roulette with when my room will cool down (if even at all) during the night.

Edit: my laptop is an Acer Predator PH317-52
- Intel Core i7-8750H (underclocked to 800MHz and undervolted from stock with -195mV offset)
- Nvidia GTX 1060M
- 256Gig(?) SSD
- 1T very slow HDD
- 16Gigs of DDR4 RAM (bit slower than a high-end 800MHz DDR2 module)

More edits:
- ChromeOS is not good, because I need a "real" OS, not a browser OS. I need the OS less locked-down than Windows itself.
- my hardware is too new for Windows 7, or even Windows 8, the earliest Windows I can use is 1607

I'm a stan for Solus OS, if I'm not using WIN10 I'd use that instead. It's good for end users, and users who are actually competent to use the command terminal.

I see it comes with Budgie, so I'll add it to the test queue. I have low expectations because Ethernet doesn't work, but if I can get Ethernet working then I'll have a good reason to stay on Linux. Bonus points if I can get the stupid Novideo drivers working.
What kind of package manager does it use? apt?

How long have you had the laptop, ever change out the thermal paste, use a laptop cooler etc?

This is not a problem with the laptop, but with Windows itself. It turns out I didn't brick the LTSB 1607 installation on my HDD, I just had to wait many more minutes until it booted to the desktop. The TDP rarely goes above 3W, and at 26% CPU usage I can significantly feel the lack of head production. On my Home installation the TDP is 5W at idle, and I can feel the CPU behaving as a space heater, and doing ANYTHING which causes a tiny softlock will crash the CPU and the watchdog will reset it. On LTSB I can play game on iGPU, play video, have a few browser tabs open, install Windows Update, and not cancel Windows Defender scan, and the CPU is happily chugging away between 3-6W TDP, averaging at 4W TDP. Definitely OS issue.

Also, it's around a year old. There is no problem with the cooling, once CPU load is removed, depending on my room temperature it can cool off to lowest fan in anywhere between 12s to 40s. On my Home installation the fan never went to lowest fan, but on my LTSB install the fan is almost always off, despite heavy multitasking.

I'm familiar enough with Linux (used it since Ubuntu 8.10), but the drivers are just shitty, broken, or nonexistant. And again, having no Ethernet is like using a 10k$ gaming PC just to play Solitaire or Minesweeper, and write stuff in Notepad.

I will not deny that, but I have had great experiences with Debian Linux in the past 1.5 years. Even with my Nvidia graphics card. Rocket League runs buttery smooth whereas, in the same machine, it's stuttery af on Win 10. I put debian on my several year old laptop and that thing ran much quicker, now I'm using it on my new laptop and still runs great. Will admit that Windows is still required just to be able to play ALL pc games, but I highly recommend debian.

As I said in the first post, I already tried Ubuntu, and I just had no luck because of the shitty nvidia drivers, and bypassing reveals that the Ethernet driver is also broken :/

As I said, I used debian (which ubuntu builds upon) and have had great experience with my nvidia card. Not sure about your driver tho. BTW, use the drivers that are supplied by your distro's repo, don't use the generic linux drivers from nvidia. They aren't tailored for the specific OS you are using, and will likely cause issues.

I tried the drivers which came out of the box, and neither nouveau, nor the proprietary driver installed from the drivers screen works. I read on the internet that for some reason they have a difficulty detecting 1060M cards?

S
wow yo protip turning on metered connection stops updates if you ever needed to in win 10

U can delete the service in registry and even remove the file itself this will stop updates because the Update command does not exist or Call for it but cant because it is not their.
U just need to know what ur doing , I have done this on 14 Laptops so far no problems U can also try Spybot AntiBeacon to add a little bit extra Anti Microsoft Bullshit just be wary it can Block AppStore Access.

Between Spying and Recording what u do to uninstalling Apps and Programs the OS is a Bastard plain and simple has all the nice Media Features and Direct X bla bla just for the cost of ur Privacy.
U also needed jump on the OH U NEED THE LATEST UPDATES CRAP!!!
Run Windows 7 SP1 and if need be setup Virtual Machines to Run any Win 10 exclusives Without loosing Hardware performance and Bandwidth from ur Internet so Mi9crosoft can do dodgy shit in the background to make ur experience better for them to collect data and profile u.

@seanp2500 I think I accidently left metered connection turned on, but that appearently doesn't stop these sneaky updates installed via osrss

@jurassicplayer well yeah, but how will I work then?

@CORE I totally forgot that I could just delete the service from registry + its backup file somewhere in the Windows folder, and that gets rid of it, but it's already too late.
I don't have any Windows 10 -only exclusives (personally I think Minecraft UWP edition is shit), but I know from experience that running a VM is taxing both on the performance and heat output, even if you can get full hardware acceleration.
Speaking of updates, I actually noticed that older versions of Windows 10 are ACTUALLY update-worthy (seriously!). I have 1607 LTSB, just installed updates, and the system boots A LOT faster now, and is a lot more stable. On the other hand, so far ALL updates broke something on 1709, so there I nuked everything related to the updater, excluding this sneaky osrss service which secretly kept installing updates in the background.

Have you tried running blackbird? It has a thing called scheduled task destroyer that removes all tracking and auto-updating, I think. Or you could just go with a linux distro.

I already removed everything, except osrss, which I missed by accident, and it was already too late. But it doesn't matter anymore, because I'm in the process of backing up my data, preparing for an OS reinstall. I'm however still debating what OS to choose, because I want to conserve the SSD write cycles as much as I can.

get windows 10 manager it will block all updates and the programs running to check for them. it will also disable the UAC that's where most of the crap comes from
