iOS has built-in emoticons! I never knew

I had no sodding idea.

To enable them, go to "Settings" -> "General" -> "International" -> "Keyboards" -> "Add new Keyboard..."
Add the keyboard called "Emoji".

There are tons of emoticons, like, hundreds...

The Japanese kana keyboard also has some built-in emoji (actual emoji, not emoticons)

It was there since iOS4, I believe, but only if you bought your iPhone/iPod touch in Japan or you had it jailbroken.
Apple unlocked the feature for everyone in iOS5
