Ok, Firstly I have to admit I have a phobia of anything to do with 'medicine' - that's Doctors, Hospitals, Dentists... even walking into a Pharmacy brings me out in a sweat,
so you can understand why I don't visit the doctors or dentist for any 'minor' problems regularly .. only when something major happens
Anyway, earlier this week I broke a tooth... just didn't know it, just had a feeling I had something stuck between the Gum & tooth,
so imagine my surprise (& horror) when I took a look in the bathroom mirror to see if I could get it out with a toothpick & found that the tooth had broken down the side...
Wouldn't of been too much of a problem - except it's one of my Wisdom teeth..... Ouch !!!
So I HAD to go to the dentist.. which I manage to get an appointment for yesterday (Friday).....
So I go in & I get handed a sheet to fill out.. asking the usual questions.. Are you on Drugs, do you suffer from.. etc - you know the type of things.
Then I get to a section asking... Who is your Doctor, where's the surgery & what's my Medical Card number....
WTF !! - the last time I went to the Doctors was over 20 Years ago for a bad case of throat infection/tonsillitis ... I don't even know if he's still alive (he was an old boy when I was 20)..
The place still exist - that much I know, (My parent goes there regularly - although usually when she books an appointment - it's usually 2-3 weeks away)
but my 'Medical Card Number' ????
Do I even HAVE one - was this introduced or something since the last time I went there ??
F**K - All I could do is fill it in the best I could (which wasn't much) - I had to rack my brains to think of who the Doctor is My Mother goes to .. I would assume it the same [family] doctor
(Off Topic: there's a funny story about when the doctors phoned me up one day)

Caller: Hello, This is the Doctors receptionist
Me: Oh ? .. OK
Caller: We're updating our records & would like to check our details with you
Me: Hmm OK..
Caller: We're checking up on a Mr ***** * **********, can you help ?
Me: Yes I can
Caller: We're wondering if he's still living {slight pause here} at that address
Me: Yes he is
Caller: Are you sure ?
Me: Yes I'm sure - you're talking to him
Caller: Oh OK - it's just you've not been to see us in quite a while
Me: Surely that's a good thing isn't it ??
Caller: Well, yes I suppose it is
Me: Anything else I can help you with ??
Caller: Erm.. No that's it... thank you for your help
Me: No problem.. Goodbye
Caller: Goodbye

Anyway, onto the Dentist
Bad News... Dentist told me I grind my teeth (which I already knew from last Dentist Appointment) & that I should consider having them Capped or have Dentures
Good News (maybe).. Due to my age, it'll be best to have them 'capped' rather than have Dentures ....(Phew)
Bad News ... It's expensive.. even on the NHS
Now onto the broken tooth
Bad news.... Yep - it HAS to come out, Gum needs cutting to remove it (gulp !!)
Good news... They took an X-ray & apparently I WON'T have to go to Hospital to have it out (something about IF it was too close to a nerve I would've needed to),
it could be done 'downstairs', so I got referred to them
Popping downstairs, I handed over the paperwork to make an appointment
Bad News... They can't fit me in until 2nd January 2013.... That's 2 1/2 Months away with me having a broken Wisdom tooth
Good News.. Luckily the tooth doesn't hurt.. just feels like there's something stuck in there all the time
Good news (If I'm lucky) ... I could phone up & see if there's a cancellation between now & then & get in earlier
So, does it pay NOT to have regular visits to Doctor's
(I REALLY hate those hypochondriacs who think they have the flu when all they have is a sniffle etc)
or the Dentists, just to have a check up & get your teeth cleaned ??
I use to think so - but now , not too sure
