Mac is [sapping] my wallet

... Actually, not mine, but my sister's. She just bought an iPohne 4 and surprise, it's not compatible with OS X 10.4 (Tiger). Okay, this version of OS X is not very recent but still. I told her to upgrade her system (I'm also pretty shocked that these updates are not free, for me the updates are really minor, but I'm not used to macs so I can't really understand the differences). I went to mac website, find the upgrade for 29$. Then suprise (again), this 29$ update is only for computers who are on OS X 10.5. If you're on 10.4, you need to buy the 'Mac Box Set', which is 169$. I was like, my sister bought an iPhone 4 (it's not something free...) then in order to use it, she needs to pay 169$ for an update and two utilites that she'll never use ? Okaaaaaaay. Please go to hell Mr. Jobs. Srsly. And they wonder why people are downloading instead of buying... I think I'm definitively a mac hater now. I wanted to give them a chance these last days (I wanted to buy an iPhone 4 or an iTouch) but now...

Lol, after reading the title, I had a completely different idea to what this was about lol.

Can't you pirate OS X 10.5, and then buy that upgrade?
Or even just pirate the newest one.. ?

People wonder why I am a Linux user. Mac charges for EVERYTHING! And Windows just cost too much in my book.
But no really, Mac is way too full of themselves, I mean come on even the soulless companies like Microsoft has free updates. Why would you charge for something that should be free?

Yeh I'd just pirate 10.5. However, depending on whether your Mac is Intel or PPC you may not be able to run 10.6. 10.6 Snow Leopard requires an Intel processor.

I was also thinking about pirating it (10.6), but my sister is not too fond of that. And I don't know if I will be able to use normal upgrades after that... Does someone tried to install a pirated version of OS X 10.5 or 10.6 ? (maybe creating a topic in the appropriate section would be a good idea for this question...)

By the way, I read on another forum that technically, the 29$ disk is compatible even if you're not on 10.5, but it's kind of illegal to install it. Is it true ?

1 question btw, how and why do you need OS X 10.5.8 of higher?
Is it iTunes? Is it drivers? Or what? Cause I am pretty sure that you can find a workaround..

EDIT: Workaround:
Why don't you install VirtualBox, run a seamless minimum Windows XP + Latest iTunes on it, and voila, have support via windows.

My sister is completely lame with computers. I don't think it's a good idea to let her deal with a virtual machine, even if it's a pretty good idea.

And I really don't know why the iPhone 4 needs 10.5.8. iTunes 10 can run on 10.4, but the phone itself is uncompatible with this version... Marketing purposes ? Anyway, I'm still trying to find some solutions.

Its incompatible because Apple make everything obsolete after a year. Say what you like about Windows but they give you a long-term support for your system. Your new device will never not work just because you're on the last version of Windows (they support 2 versions or so back I think. XP is still being supported). They never make you pay for upgrades to WMP and IE and they will always plug security holes for free.

This whole thing does sound like a load of complete bullshit to me though. I wholeheartedly agree that you shouldn't be forced to buy the more expensive upgrade option, hell, you shouldn't be paying at all.

can't you just create a partition on the HDD and install windows XP on it with itunes 10? Shouldn't be to hard for her to use it.
OT: Also, I was thinking of buying a itouch as well, but after what I've read ( the truth articles) I think I'll just screw apple. Even the Iphone 4 has problems, and is way overpriced.

I rather enjoy a life of taking it easy. I haven't reached that life yet though.
