My life in southern Brazil

I just felt like telling how is my life in Brazil, I don't really know why. Maybe this will change how some people think about my country but welp, I don't honestly care either.

I live in the south of Brazil, in the south of the province of Santa Catarina, on a very small isolated fishing town with only about 10,000 people living on it, most of them being very old rich people that want to spend their last few decades in peace with other old rich people. Life here is pretty peaceful, it's not at all agitaded or dangerous as you might think.
Crime exists, I mean, it does everywhere, but it's rare, very rare. I never ever got robbed here or something like that. There are gangs and they fight constantly, but they stay away from normal people, except sometimes, but that's a story for another time.

Basically, my life is pretty calm, from summer to winter, I can just relax. I go to school from monday to friday, get back home, get on my PC and spend my afternoons like this. I do hang out a lot with my small number of friends and have quite some fun, we walk around A LOT, going from one point of my town to the other in a matter of two hours ( Half an hour if we have bikes ). Vacations start as early as November and end on late February, so we have a lot of time to enjoy summer ( Seasons are different here ). We also have a week long winter vacation when the temperatures go too low, mostly around July.

Summer here has a lot of parties, I obviously don't go to them because I'm still a minor but it's kinda neat seeing those people having fun. Even though this is a coastal town, I absolutely hate the beach and would much rather go camp at a lake like a lot of people.
Winter is my favorite part of the year, except for school of course. It gets pretty darn cold here in winter and it even snows on the mountains we have. On the hottest part of the winter days we get around 7 to 8°C and drops all the way down to -3 at night. I love it because I can wear lots of clothing and use more than one cover :3

Well, as I've said, this IS a small town, so we don't really have a lot to do. Most stores here only open in summer and they are mostly clothing stores. We have no McDonald's, Starbucks, Subway, or anything like that, we do have fast food places and in my opinion, their food is WAY better than big fast food companies like McDonald's. They make bigger tastier food for much less, some combos here in my town cost R$10 ( US$2.8 ) and come with a big ass hamburger we call X ( Read as Cheese ) and with a 2l soda, it's crazy!
But well... That still doesn't make up for the lack of stuff, we have no shopping centers, no theaters, nothing like that. And NEET people like me get screwed even more. If I want to buy my monthly share of manga, games and other stuff, I have to go all the way to Criciúma which is our neighbouring city. And it's very hard to travel 32km alone when you are under-age and have social anxiety, so I only go there with my mom very rarely.
It's not that huge of a deal though, because I can buy stuff though the internet and they arrive rather quickly ( Most of the time in 15 days ) and I don't even have to step out of my room ( My dad picks them up for me ).

And now, the last thing I want to talk about... The internet.
This is the shittiest part about living here. It is slow and expensive, and now all the big internet providers ( Which provide internet even to the small ones, crazy right? ) want to set a montly data limit. The most expensive plan has a limit of only 160gbs, and it's not even available here.
My internet is a 1mbps connection, I get 95kbps download and 50kbps upload, if my provider adds a limit, I'll have only 10gbs, and list time I checked, I was using 68gbs per month ( with all the devices in my house combined, it's 4 phones, 3 consoles, a PC and a smart TV ), so that's fucking stupid.

Anyways, I like living here but we have our problems...

If there's anything else you guys wanna know about here, just ask. I'll be happy to awsner :D

Something must be wrong in your calculations there. It's literally impossible to use 467 GB a month if you only have 95kbps download and 50kbps upload. You'd use ~ 350 GB a month if your upload and download speed was constantly maxed.

Shit, I was wrong. :X

467 is how much I spent in 6 months, not one... SHIT, I'll edit the post.

Thanks for pointing that out @The Real Jdbye

68GBs a month is not too much.

My plan has a limit of 60GBs a month, considering that we are only 2 and barely download huge files.

For 95kbps it is a good amount.

When I had 1.7mbps download when I lived in Criciúma, that number was much higher.

The only reason that Brazil (as a whole) is perceived as an 'evil country full of narcs' is because of a small region (minuscule compared to the whole country), and because of the corruption.

That is an undeniable truth, I mean right today the Parliament was voting whether to go ahead or not with the crime case against their own President, Dilma Rouseff. But I'm going off-topic.

Moral of the story: don't judge a coutry based only on what you see. I live right in a neighbouring country and we know the truth about Brazil. It's got a rampant corruption issue and you really gotta stay away from some parts of the country or you WILL get robbed/mugged/murdered/kidnapped/raped/whatever else you can think of. Other than that it's a really nice country, too bad about these blatant issues, but you seem like a guy who has a nice life, especially compared to what others are living.

@Pacheko17 I really enjoyed your blog post. How are you NEET if you got school? I laughed that you know what NEET means XD

That is true @Wolfvak, some places really are in trouble right now. São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro especially, with their huge amount of crime.

Corruption is also affecting us in the south, and we are the state that likes the government the least. Well, at least Dilma's impeachment isn't too far.

And my objective here was not to judge the entire country. Just to tell people that not every place is the same.

@funnystory Well, I just use NEET as a broader term. In reality I'm an otaku, but that sounds kinda... stupid to some people.

@Pacheko17 that's exactly what I wanted to say.
I just didn't want to say "Look, your country is an absolute mess in some aspects, it needs an entire cleanup, but some places are cool, keep them like that", at least not that harshly.

@Wolfvak Well, that's basically it. We don't feel offended by that, because that's exactly how we are right now. That's also the reason southerners want to separate from Brazil so badly ( Which I doubt will ever happen )

@pacheko17 I am frm Mexico but havent been to my country in years(Live in the USA) What would you say is more dangerous Mexico or Brazil?

@funnystory Depends on what part of Brazil and what part of Mexico you are in. Big cities here are often very dangerous and thousands of people get robbed every day ( Hundreds of them murdered ). All I know about Mexico is through my Mexican friend that taught me Spanish, he lives in Mazatlan and says it's not very bad there, so yeah, I can't really say much about it. Just be careful where you're going if you ever go to Brazil.

@VinsCool I wish I had the money to do that. That's mine and my dad's dream... Maybe one day, who knows. I did live in Japan for a while, so I had a taste of a first would country, and boy, it was nice.

How's the organic produce market there? Are things like organic fruits and tofu available at all?

@Meteor7 Not very good. I mostly hear about them in the news because a lot of people fake them, they buy non-organic fruits and sell them as organic for a higher price.

Fellow Brazilian here.
The south sure is cold, huh. We get around 32 to 38°C here in Goiânia all year round.
Not being able to buy otaku goods in physical stores isn't so bad; what really ticks me off on that end are our abusive import taxes. I've been overtaxed multiple times by customs on scale figures I've imported from Japan, most times i end up paying almost twice the product's base price in total.
Also, that's some really bad internet you've got there. Please tell me your ISP isn't Oi! I still have nightmares from my time with them!
