My Nephew has fallen into the weeaboo rabbit hole

When my Nephew was a little boy, I showed him Mario on Wii and his interest was spiked. When I got a Wii U, the boy fell in love with it and immediately hassled his parents for one. He would come to my place and want to game on some MK8 and 3D World, he even bought a copy of Splatoon and would bring it to my house to play. The little shit would, however, take it home afterwards despite not having a Wii U. Eventually he got one, which meant me and him now officially owned 50% of Wii U systems in the country. It was a shameful day for the family.

Over the years, he got into Pokemon, played a lot of the games and watched the anime. He got so into it, he had to make sure he was always up to date. This led to him watching Pokemon subtitled. He was so dedicated, he watched episodes in Spanish despite not speaking a word of the language like an anime fan in 2007 watching all of their anime on youtube. (Who remembers being able to watch parts 1 and 3 but part 2 was missing?) A few weeks ago, he was visiting and told me that he's watched so much Pokemon in Japanese that the English voices now sound weird to him. He didn't realise it, but he's now part of the Subs>Dubs club.

When he told me that, everything fell into place. He plays Dragon Quest, he despises Fortnite and CoD, he's friends with a self-described weeb. I realised that he had fallen into the weeaboo rabbit hole and his life was over. I turned to my Niece and told her that she was this family's only hope now.

In a few years, I know he will come to me and tell me "Uncle, I've fallen in love." When I ask him with who, he will introduce to the anime girl of the season, as he declares "Girl-chan is my Waifu." I will stroke my beard and tell him coldly "Your Waifu is trash."

You do have an option, though it will cost you any cool uncle status.

You can try to use Japanese honorifics in conversation with him, and when referring to him with others present. More effect can be had using ones for women and young girls even if you know better.
This then making it so uncool that he will not head down the path too far.

Your sins are terrible.
@FAST6191 "I know what I must do, but I'm not sure if I have the strength to do it"

@DinohScene No. Vita really has no gaems anymore.

@p1ngpong No. Him being a future weeb is bad enough. Becoming a full-on Nintentard is not on.

@eriol33 :ohnoes:

@TastifulBurger He only think bakas play cod.

@Chary Yup it is.

I had a discussion a few days ago with my friend about subs>dubs, after reading this blog post. He got pretty mad when I called him a weeb.
Which was super funny to me because I said "I don't mind watching dubs if they're actually good ones, which is super rare", but he said "it doesn't matter, dubs are always bad, no exceptions" and I said "that's a pretty weeb thing of you to say" or something of that sort.
He immediately got super defensive and responded with something like "you think I'm a weeb just because I watch anime? huh?! stop with that shit, plenty of people watch anime, it means nothing", as if I don't watch anime myself.
Which was hilarious to me because that somehow made him sound even more weeby and completely missing my point at the same time.
I responded with "lmao you are such a weeb XD" and he just got madder. That discussion must have lasted for an hour or two. I don't see being a weeb as anything bad (unlike otakus) and had no ill intentions at all merely pointing something out so he was getting completely worked up for nothing, although I did poke a bit of fun at how immediately defensive he got.
Weeb just means someone who loves Japan and Japanese culture and there's nothing wrong with that. I told him he should just embrace it, but he refused. I know a few weebs and they are all pretty normal and friendly people, I've got nothing negative associated with that term.
