Played some Diddy Kong racing on old CRT....on solar power! :)

Years ago when the neighbours moved they asked if I wanted their big old CRT. It was a Sony...something and I said "Sure!" I just had to carry it down from the 4th floor myself! Hahaha

I moved it into my storage box almost immidiatly and never got arround to actually testing it! Kind of stupid because it's humongous and weighs as much as a small moon!!

But now I am working with solar power stuff I also got a portable power station with AC sockets that can deliver 600 watts continous. I looked up the specs of CRT's and they should use about 80-100 watts from what I could find. So that should work fine.

Now that I am organizing the storage box I brought the power station with me and hooked up the TV and N64 to play some Diddy Kong Racing with my neice. It was a fun 5 minutes...hahaha...but the CRT works! Yaay! Only it has a bit of a red/purple tint wheb it should be black. Looks like a common problem...but I'll look into it later.

Here is a still from the video I took:

UPDATE: And the actual video (had to make sure there was no personal info in there first...I think it's ok :rofl2:)

That's a beautiful TV.
I must admit I'm a tad jealous. Mine is a small little thing TV/VCR combo. Only has Mono sound and dreadful amounts of overscan.

Your screen looks way bright.
Might be the angle, but yhe black background is actually very high.

Might indicate a capacitor problem on the board handling the picture (usually the one separated from the yoke).

You should take care of it if preservation interests you.
A recap might actually not just prolong your CRT's life... but actually improve your overall picture.

PS: Totally jealous. I'm regretting giving up my CRT Monitor couple years ago. 🥺

Thanks. I also got such a small little CRT that has some glass damage, but I got it really cheap a few years ago.

Make sure you installed all the software updates!
OMG! You almost made mee pee my pants from laughing :rofl2::rofl2::rofl2::rofl2:

It's probably both the angle a d brightness. It was bright and flickery in person too, but that's what CRT's were like ofcourse.

The whole reason for keeping it is to one day have a retro game room...or something. And then being able to play on real CRT eould be bice.

I know enough about CRT's to stay away from their insides...so if repair is needed I hope I can find an old repair service somewhere.
Just knowing it 'might' be fixable gives me enough reason to keep it arround. I can't say it does not take up any space....but it will be worth it some day. :D

I got this one for free, so I can't complain much I guess. And I did not play around with any of the settings. This was just a power-on test...and the N64 was the one closest to test it with.:D

I have attached the video now showing a few more angles of the screen. The red is most visible when the whole screen should be black, but also around the title screen/logo.
