Thoughts on SoulSilver.

BEFORE I START THIS: NO FLAMING!!! EVERYTHING I SAY IS MY OWN OPINION AND IF YOU THINK OTHERWISE, THAT'S FINE. JUST DON'T CALL ME GAY OR WHATEVER FOR WHAT I THINK.

So I bought SoulSilver on Saturday and have been playing it for about ten hours now (I don't play that much).
And I must say I really liked it. First of all because it's Johto and Johto is awesome (Explained later), second because of the new additions (some of 'em, not all).
The Pokéathlon is fun to play once, but I can't see myself actually spending more than an hour on this.
Also the Voltorb flip game is amusing and kept me hooked for a while, but I would've preferred the slots.
Also WHY change Tin Tower to Bell Tower? Not that I don't like the game, but they might as well have kept to the original name.
Gotta love the Battle Frontier and the new Safari Zone though.
Another thing I thought was really funny is that Falkner beat me on my first try (which never happened to me in the original games), while I run over Whitney on my first try. I beat her Clefairy with my lvl 20 Quilava, her Miltank deafeats my Quilava, I send out Hoothoot which gets defeated by a first-turn rollout, I send out my Onix and pwn Miltank with headbutt. It was kool (:P)

So now why I find Johto so awesome. For this, I will compare Johto to other regions and compare what was intoduced in those regions (counting the remakes as separate games).

1st Gen (R/B/Y)
New things: Everything, this was the basis of Pokémon.

Pros: Nice high levels, epic bad guys.

Cons: Hideous sprites.

2nd Gen (G/S/C)
New things: 100 new Pokémon, Breeding, Bug Catching Constest, Two regions to visit, day/night system, Radio, Trainer Rematches, Hold items, lots of new moves that are still used often nowadays, roaming Pokémon, swarms, berries, new ways of evolving, trainers that actually have names, shiny pokemon, happiness (for all pokemon instead of just Pikachu in Yellow) moving sprites (Crystal only)0 etc. You get the idea, these are the most innovative games in the series, and the best IMO

Pros: Awesome music, awesome characters, awesome pokémon, awesome sprites, awesome region, awesome backstory, awesome games

Cons: Low-leveledness, too many Kanto Pokémon in Johto and too many Johto Pokémon in Kanto.

3rd gen (R/S/E)
New things: Definitive berry names, Town map in trainer device instead of being a seperate item, 130-something new pokemon, effort values, trick room, two different bicycles.

Pros:They were the new Pokemon games back then I guess.

Cons:Bad music, horrible pokemon design, Hoenn had too much water, characters were stupid, these are the worst pokemon games IMO.

1st gen remakes (FR/LG)
New things: Sevii islands, trainer tower.

Pros: Nostalgia

Cons: We've played this before, Sevii islands were kinda boring. And they remixed the awesome 1st gen music into abominations that sounded just like Hoenn's music.

4th gen (D/P/Pt)
New things: Underground, couple of new pokemon, wifi, a pretty awesome team of bad guys, pokeradar, reintroduction of the day/night system.

Pros: Cool region with cool legends, pretty long adventure, cool bad guys, lots of Johto references.

Cons: New Pokémon are generally meh, surfing at walking speed (D/P only), slow battles (D/P only)

2nd gen remakes (HG/SS)
New things: Pokeathlon, customisable safari zone, Gym leader rematches over and over again.

Pros: Nostalgia, everything the original games had.

Cons: Almost none, since they basically fixed everything I found bad in the original games. But some of the names are really bad.

Discuss, fellow tempers!

Its waaay too easy.

My thought on SoulSilver is that this is quite possible the best Pokemon game ever for me.
Especially the replaying capabilities (rematch Gymleaders for example) and the amazing online capabilities (finally possible to get a full Pokedex without having a friend/brother with a Pokemon game) and the nice GUI (Itemfinder is so handy on touchscreen, I never did more Itemfinding then now) are pro's in my opinion.

I tried playing Diamond, but got bored after about 10 hours of playing. But this game really made me saw the Pokelight again, and I'm as hooked as I was back in the day playing Silver.

The game isn't perfect though, major annoyances in my opinion are the just random and boring chatter, HM system that is even more annoying then in the first generation and the slow pace of a battle (although this has improved a lot, mainly thanks to a cheat).
The weak Trainers are also fucking annoying, my Pokemon are level 42 at the moment, and I sometimes battle trainers that hardly are level 28.

For the next Pokemon game (which I probably won't play, but still) they should make an option that just removes all the useless and dumb chatter from regular trainers, make it able to just jump right into the battle.
And they should make the Trainers and wild Pokemon a bit tougher and edit the HM system. An idea I had on this was to make a seventh Pokemon slot, where you could put a Pokemon that can never battle but can learn HM moves. That slot could also be used for Pokemon that are kind of storybound, like the Shuckle you get in Cianwood City from that guy. I always hate it to put a Pokemon in the box, get that Pokemon, put it in the box and get my Pokemon back again. Takes about 1 minute, way too long in my opinion.
So another thing they should improve is the box system, like I mentioned above, way too slow.

Slow battle pace? It might be because I'm used to Diamond but I really didn't notice that at all.

Diamond was even worse IMHO, this is quite alright.
I just put on the battle scene immediately, those things make the game last forever.
But it really gets slow by some things like Intimidate that cuts your Pokemons attack, they always mention that and things like It's raining and so.
Fricking annoying, they could maybe make an option that you can see that by an icon next to your level or so?

Also, maybe this could be moved to the NDS Games section?

Well this is more like a blog about my experiences, so I don't see the need for it to be moved to be honest. If any mod disagrees with me, feel free to move it anyway.

I think it's just an excuse to go with the norm and say R/S/E were shit. Personally, I loved them. There was a lot to do, such as the secret hideout areas in trees, the trick house, and other things. And if anything Johto had more water than Hoenn. There was usually a pond in every town in Johto, and 7 of the cities had big bodies of water near or surrounding them (New Bark, Cherrygrove, Goldenrod, Olivine, Cianwood, Mahogany, and Blackthorn).

Also, I'm assuming by backstory, he just means story/plot.

There was too much obligatory water in Hoenn, Johto does indeed have lots of water but most of it you don't have to go through.
And my opinion on Hoenn has been like that since I played those games and was NOT influenced by other people.

I bet it's something to do with the fact that Tin Tower sounds like 'Twin Tower'.

I wasn't personally the biggest fan of the Ruby/Sapphire games, but only because I didn't have it. Did borrow it a few times, though.
The new pokemon weren't bad, just a few that I find dumb, ugly and unnecessary(Regi-legendaries especially). I wouldn't call that generation the worst though, there were lots of great things about it.
And I don't think the story's too great in any pokemon game.

I agree. I always think they're calling to have a rematch, but that's rarely the case. It's pretty annoying. I know what you mean about the weak trainers as well. You'll see that in Kanto a lot too.

Or: they could just remove HM's altogether. Instead, make people that go away after beating a Gym leader to advance in the story. I hate trying to train Pokemon and having to use Cut or Rocksmash to advance in the game.

I always hated that too. They should change that.

EDIT: They could turn the good HM's (Surf, Fly, Waterfall) into TM's like Flash.

Character design is horrible.

HGSS is sloooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooow

Huge turn-off for me. I don't think I'll complete this game. (I have just 7 badges, and I just can't stand the pacing)

True, that's maybe a good idea. Like in Mahogany town, a person blocks the way to the next town.
Good HM's should stay, and I do like the though of moving on water.

And maybe the most annoying thing in any Pokemon game for me, is the fact that some normal trainers more then 4 weak Pokemon have, instead of 1 or 2 strong ones.
Is there really anyone that likes to battle 5-6 weak Pokemon, like Ratatta and Magikarp instead of 1 stronger Pokemon, a few levels higher like a Gyarados or so?
I fucking hate that, makes the game so slow and tiring.
I'm lucky I completed Pokemon Silver around 10 times (!), so I know which trainer has which Pokemon and where those annoying fucks are.

Do you have the maximum text speed and fast screen change cheat on?
Also, turn the battle style off and maybe give yourself loads of Full Restores and Max Elixirs, so you don't have to go to a Pokemon center everytime.
