What I have been up to....

Well...not much really. Unfortunately. my mind is in some sort of overload resulting in me mostly doing nothing...or mindless internet/youtube browsing etc... ^_^

To get a bit healthier I started swimming again. Getting annoyed by slow people, my swimglasses that get foggy for the first 30-60 minutes, always being kind of late for the opening hours of "laneswimmin" and not having as much time as I would like/or want. It's also really busy every single time so that kinda sucks too! :(
But even with all that....I have mostly made it to go at least once a week over the last three months for a total of 15.6KM of swimming! Yay! :D

Also trying to learn rollerskating...but that is not exactly going that well yet. Got protection gear obviously but still fall to much...and being scared to fall...makes me insecure that I can do it. And that makes it even harder. Tried looking for some sort of classes but the "Season is over" it seems...so it's either trying on my own or wait until spring next year I guess. Either way it's a fun activity and you use a lot of muscles you don't use with a desk job....especially while working from home the last two years!
This is also the reason I picked up swimming again...to get my condition/stamina (whatever it's called in English :shy::P) back as I did 5 years ago! Because of less activity I gained a lot of wait that I worked so hard for to lose then. But i did lose 3-4 kilo's already in those few month's of swimming. no..I did not change my diet yet and not planning on it either. I tried that before....and it did wonders for my weight...but not my mood! :rofl2:
Just need to also pickup walking again as extra exercise to clear my head and stuff. I know it works....but the step to actually GO is as high as mount Everest most of the days!

The other really fun thing I have been doing the last couple of weeks is replacing nearly ALL the lights in the house with zigbee smart bulbs (ohh the zigbee..for those that know :rofl2:) . Putting it al together in home assistant...(yep...Hooommmeee Assistant :rofl2:) (just look up paul hibbert on youtube if you don't get these jokes) and using motion sensors to trigger the lights to go on by themself! Brightness is adjusted based on time of day and or if it's before/after sunset. Timers are running at either 3 minutes during the night at low brightness up to 30 minutes at 100% during diner time. After that timer runs out...lights go to 10% for just 2 minutes and after that go out completely until motion is detected again.
In addition to the motion sensors I also got a few wireless wall switches and a bunch of Ikea dimmer buttons where needed. But everything is used from home assistant without using any of the brand specific Zigbee Hub's/bridges.
Still working out what timings are best and when to change brightness and when not. If the lights are on for example...or pushed to 100% with a manual button the motion sensor "overrides" it and puts it at 50% some times. So...there are many things to improve there.

I do think the bathroom (shower only) is the best so far. You need to walk through the kitchen to get there...so the second motion sensor in the kitchen turns on a single (out of three) lights in the bathroom to 5% for 2 minutes. This way it's never too dark in there when you walk in during the night. Then the motion sensor in the bathroom will turn all three spots on to 50% for 5 minutes. The motion sensor keeps resetting the 5 minute timer while someone is in there...and when you walk out it turns the lights off after those 5 minutes.
And I also put a sensor on the door so that when it's closed and the lights were already on...it will turn the lights on for 15 minutes at 100% and a slightly different white color while taking a shower. When the door is opened again the lights return to 50% warm-white and a 5 minute timer after which they are turned off. :D

There are more automation....but nothing as close to "perfect" as the bathroom I think. Hahahah. I have not even talked about the additional door sensors and temperature/humiddity sensors yet, but it might be better to do that in future blog posts as this one is getting quite long already

With all of the above there has been very little time to do anything for BatteryCheck. So no cool update stories about that yet...but I do have a few ideas I deffinetly want to work on before the end of the year! Not sure when exactly...might be soon...might be the very last day! Hahahah. You know those blue battery holders (for those that played ofcourse)? Well...I want to include the animations for them! Play the sound and maybe even have them trigger the corresponding action in the level. Or maybe the activation first...animation later? Not sure yet!
The other hopefully simple addition after that should be the elevators. They only move up and down with a configured speed. No need for the bounce effect at first but I will need to look into how hard that is when I get to it.
Either way...no promises of anything...since I have a terrible habit of not keeping them. sorry.:shy:

Thanks for your time. :D

I imagine that eventually there will be A.I. lights that figure out the best lighting pattern based on movement pattern and past activities across the whole house.

From what I have learned we are not even that far away from something like that. Just "record/learn" from a week of usage with motion sensors and manual light switches a commercial expensive system should be able to do that. But who knows what cheap stuff comes from china that does some of it already ;)

I had wanted something like this for many years! Played around with arduino's, ESP's and raw sensors and while it could have worked 'ok' I did not like how it would look. Also the power consumption would be insane for standard arduino's (or clones) and it would just become to big. so I abandoned the idea. Then I found relatively cheap good looking sensors from Aqara that can run 2 years (at least that's what they claim) on a single battery! I have so many sensors now that I have lost count of them, hahaha. But HomeAssistant says I now have over 100+ zigbee devices!!! :D

It works great...only one time the server running it locked up and needed to be restarted. Then none of the automatons and buttons worked anymore. But most lights still have the original switch and when toggled off-on they are on by default. Lesson number 1: ALWAYS make sure automatons and voice commands come second to physical switches for important lights! Just in case something goes wrong. ;)

Swimming… not since I was 14 years old. I just do not want to show myself very lightly dressed in public (that is not something people would want to see)
If I had a big pool with a big wall around the area and nobody being allowed/able to come near, I'd gladly swim again.
Things like rollerskating are out of range for me. As a child/teenager, when the body felt elastic and indestructible like rubber, it would maybe have been possible.

For sports this leaves cycling, jogging and fast wandering/walking (high differences in altitude around here: walking about 10 kilometers with carefully chosen paths can easily lead to three times going up/down >150 meters, so this is exhausting)

Cannot relate to "Smart Home". Needlessly complex and I don't really see any practical implications ("convenience"). Tinkering and having fun with technology is a good argument.
Anything "smart" relying on internet/servers is a big nono for me (various reasons).

Needlessly complex stuff for everyday life always make me think of Star Trek III

The more complicated the mechanism, the easier it is to create a bit of confusion.

This is why I want to keep everything in the house non-smart and simple: It just works and can be understood instantly.

Good luck with your homebrew project! It really is one of the coolest.

Yeah, I know what you mean about being in public like that. But since the pool I go to is always really busy and it's mostly older...or..ehm...bigger people...I kind of blend in. But still feel insecure every time anyway! It's been one of the main "excuses" not to go...on top of covid regulations...for the last two years.
For a while I had a personal trainer and I really hated the fitness exercises and machines in the gym! Also hate when you workout you sweat everywhere...and in the pool it just floats away. (let's ignore what other people do in there for now thank you ^_^)
Swimming is what helped me lose weight before...when I was 127KG at the worst moment! In about 6 moths I got it down to 115...and with the PT to around 99.....but could not maintain it during covid. so back to around that again. But it's going down slow and steady. :D

The roller skating is something I always wanted to learn and it looks so cool when people who are good at it do it like it's nothing! I don't even mean tricks and jumps...but just cruising around the streets or going through a park. It's also an activity where you use a lot of muscles and you need to be in good shape to do it...at least that is what my feet and legs are telling me.:rofl2:
But it's mostly because of a promise I made to my little girl (best friends daughter...but feels like my own :shy:) to go skate together more often if she teaches me! And while it's been a lot of fun...I do think I might take "real" skating lessons so next year we can actually go around the park...and not just a couple of meters with me falling (or nearly fall) every 30cm!!!
Nothing's broken yet...except my ego maybe. :rofl2:

A good smart home is one where you do not notice it's there! :D Obviously I like to tinker and play with the technology, but for me the biggest advantage is that lights automatically turn off when a room is empty for a while and that lights are now dimmable. ANd since last week I have been "training" myself to wake up early and go to sleep on time...using my "smart lights"! :D
In short that works like this: Led strip changes color at 23:00 to green. Changes to red at 00:00 every 15 minutes and Alexa telling me it's getting late! Then in the morning the lights slowly go on...and ceiling lights go to 100% in a period of 2 minutes. Starting at 06:00 repeating every 15 minutes until 08:00 or a specific condition is met. (that's currently a 2,5 hour timer doing nothing). It's like an alarm clock...but slilent! Well..alsmost...since I added Alexa saying it's time to get out! And strangely it really works! And I have buttons within reach to "snooze" the ceiling light off.

But i do agree nothing smart should rely on the internet to function....and aside from Alexa in my example above it all works with a local server. That was already on 24/7 anyways so it's just an extra function for that machine. It's not a raspberry pi which is commonly used for home assistant, but an Intel NUC running linux server. I am thinking of moving this to my synology NAS though. not sure yet.
The main point is that every light still has the option to be turned on/off with a real button. These are in most cases also zigbee switches now...but still under local control not relying on the internet.

The second thing I am testing now is smarter heating control. If nobody is in the house...there is no need to heat it to 20+ celsius right? Also replaced two radiator valves with zigbee smart valves...the other's are not compatible and need the taps replaced. But at least this is a start to get a feel for how it works....and turning off the heating entirely when a room is not used. or when nobody is home.
This is why I want to keep everything in the house non-smart and simple: It just works and can be understood instantly.
To each their own. :) Like i said (or tried to say) I do try to keep it simple for others by putting a switch near the "smart light" that just works as expected. Well...almost. It turns the light on and off...but it also starts the timer to turn it off automatically. I do plan on making that 30 minutes when a button is used instead of 5-10 minutes when triggered by motion.

About the startrek quotes....it's been a while since I saw that movie. And from what I remember (and my opinion) it's one of the not so good movies so I forgot most of it. Big trekkie otherwise offcourse....just look at my user name and profile picture, hahahah.

But there is some truth in those sayings. And in many cases the simplest solution is the best one! :D

In many ways....I guess my interest in smart home and computers in general comes from watching star trek actually!
Good luck with your homebrew project! It really is one of the coolest.
Thank you so much for these kind words. It's not even finished yet:D It will get finished...some day. ^_^

as usual...a reply as long as a blog post. :shy::rofl2:

Thanks again.
