"What the fuck are you trying to do?"

I'll admit I'm not exactly GBATemp's target audience. I'm only here to find new information on the Switch and only came here to figure out how to put Gamecube and Wii games on my Wii U (I haven't even hacked the Wii U side). I generally avoid the rest of the forum, but sometimes there's something in the recent content section that I'm compelled to click on, only to find something that I consider to be really terrible - ranging from technically unfeasible (like the guy trying to hack together a VGA and component cable because he refuses to pay $20 for a proper converter) to the morally questionable (like the guy trying to jailbreak a Chromebook loaned to him by his school explicitly for schoolwork) and the ethically shady (like the guy that refused to even buy a single DS game to jailbreak his Wii U.

Look I get that we all have our own standards and definition of what lines not to cross, but sometimes it really gets hard to ignore the stuff that I don't accept. I'm not going to pray that somehow this site magically starts... "conforming to my moral limits" or some shit like that, but I really don't want to just walk away from the bits of useful information I do get from here.

Meh. The reason I'm here is mostly for fun. Hacking a console is really fun, and you learn a lot on how the console works. I've got zero patience though for those that aren't willing to buy something to hack their device, and then start whining that they want to do it for free.

As an exapmle: I don't own a flashcard. Why? Because all current resellers are shady, and my dad refuses to allow me to buy one. Am I pissed? Yes. Do I whine about it on GBATemp? Aside from a single thread where I ask if there are any non-shady resellers (which as a hint, there are none), no I don't. Instead, I'm supportive of those that have the technical expertise and are currently working on getting NDS games to work on my 3DS. I'm in the minority here though, sadly.

The words of an authoritarian.

I came for the R4i Gold 3DS help in 2012, and stayed for prettymuch the Wii, Wii U, 3DS, and now the Switch hacking scenes. I love it here, it's my second home. I now have a life-long GBATemp-exclusive project on the forums as well, my MediCat DVD. GBATemp is it's "forever home", so to speak. So I guess you could say I'm quite rooted to the Temp now. Though it feels like a common-law marriage.

@Xiphiidae Lol, funny but true. I dunno why is so hard for people to just leave. If you see something you don't like, walk away, no one is forcing you to read it or say anything about it. You intentionally made it a problem by intentionally responding to it. You are now part of that problem weather you started it or not. Lots of people do this to me, i know why they do it, but i can ignore it. Just leave it. It needs no response for unnecessary attention or gain.

Is the internet, expect ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING, is no different than walking down the street and seeing people do dumb things. You can't force change on people but you can help guide them IF THEY WANT IT. :P

@Ev1l0rd If that was the case, then that person would never sleep, cause THERE IS ALWAYS SOMETHING WRONG ON THE INTERNET! :P

Well, it is the internet. A large population of people who hack their systems are interested in piracy to varying degrees. Some people keep that to themselves, while others don't really care what they say to random people on the internet. As such, in order to prevent such morally questionable posts (if GBATemp decided to do so) would require a substantial amount of moderation. Locking threads, deleting posts, and banning users is anti-conversation and against the spirit of forums. Yes, it is necessary in extreme cases in order to keep the community as a whole in-line. But you want to give people the freedom to say what they want to say, especially on a site like this where it could be argued that anything related to hacking is "morally questionable".

I think the GBATemp staff are doing a fine job at setting reasonable limits on what people can post without shutting out conversation. Take note that it is against the rules to explicitly ask for or post links to something that is illegal, and from what I've seen, the staff have done a good job at enforcing that. (For example, topics like "Where can I download free isos?")

>is on a site that started as a rom site and is still a giant hub for modding consoles and other piratey things.
>apparently pirates wii and gamecube games on his wii u.
>can't handle other people doing the same thing.

k.

Your title is confrontational, so I'm going to assume you wanted to start an argument. That said, you freely admit "but I really don't want to just walk away from the bits of useful information I do get from here". Guess what, most of that information is here because of people who, by your standards, have questionable morals and shady ethics.

You don't have to love everything that goes on here, but if you're gaining something from using the site, you should probably not sit in judgement over other users.

You could always start your own site where you would have absolute control over the content, it's only taken 15 years for GBAtemp to get where it is now, that's not long right? Not to mention, it's wy less shady now than it once was.

@mechagouki My title is my sentiment on the issue, I added quotes to try to clarify that it's not an attack. I'm aware that my opinions are in the far minority on this site, just I find certain topics to be mildly infuriating yet a little harder to avoid than i like.

I would say you are exactly the temp's target audience. People come here not for Switch or general gaming information, but for hacking their systems to enable things that are not possible without a hack.
