Windows 7 Support End-of-Life (Also, Why I'd Prefer Upgrading to 8.1 Over 10)

This is what people will see when going to Microsoft's website up until the deadline shown. It is expected by most Windows users that Microsoft would no longer support Windows versions that become 10 years old and older, but it's damaging to Microsoft when they kill support for a platform that was still going strong and expect people to upgrade. Even worse when there aren't better alternatives.

Windows XP End of Life

The message that was sent to users shortly before the end of support.

Go back to 2014. After 12 years of support due to there being so many people who loved using Windows XP, and perhaps arguably Microsoft's best version of Windows to date, Microsoft announced that support for all editions of Windows XP would end. They also used imagery of an old computer system running Windows XP versus a new system running the latest Windows at the time, Windows 8.1. Ridiculous, to say the least, as there were newer systems which could efficiently run Windows XP 64-bit. Yet, despite the security risks of a dead system, according to StatCounter a surprising 1.54% of people still use Windows XP. It may not sound like much, but considering that there are approximately 7 billion people on the planet, roughly 100 million still use Windows XP. Now, this estimate can very much be inaccurate, since not everyone owns a computer, but it could still be a fairly high amount considering that this is a statistic basing on how many computers have Windows XP, not exactly how many people use it, since more than one person can use a desktop or laptop. I wouldn't be surprised if I were to discover that 50 million still use XP.

Windows 7 End of Life

January of next year, all Windows 7 versions will no longer be supported (save those that are protected by volume licensing, in which it is extended until January 10th, 2023). What will this mean for Windows 7 users? Of all the currently supported Windows version, Windows 7 is the best, beating Windows 8.1 in the market share by over 25% globally according to StatCounter. Microsoft is now pushing messages on systems still running Windows 7, prompting users to upgrade to Windows 10.

Why I Do Not Recommend Windows 10

640px-Windows_10_Home_Version_20H2_Desktop.png

Windows 10 integrates several new features, including Cortana, which collects user data automatically.

There are those who are gonna scoff, but it's actually been proven over and over. Microsoft is collecting your data. Even as recently as August of this year, because of the GDPR Microsoft is consistently being investigated about their data collection. The best way that they are doing it nowadays is with Windows 10, which has various diagnostic and info-collecting services on by default. Even after turning these features off, some personal information can still be collected by Microsoft. There is a way to remove built-in software manually, but it becomes reset after every major update.

Is Windows 8.1 Safer Than Windows 10?

Windows_8.1_Pro_Default_Start_Screen.png

Due to there being many gripes about lack of desktop integration in Windows 8, Microsoft released Windows 8.1, which can be either seen as a mere upgrade or a separate version altogether.

Let's be honest here - unless Microsoft has stopped using it altogether, there really isn't such a thing as a "safe" version of Windows. However, many of these things which can be potential privacy breaches are built into Windows 10 by default. Windows 8.1 lacks several features (like Cortana) which collects and stores information remotely that has to be manually deleted or retrieved, so unless you add them to Windows 8.1 (via Windows Update or their own website), then yes it is somewhat better, in regards to privacy and security from the very developers of it. One thing's for sure: it's a heck of a lot better than Windows 8! :P

And I still hardly doubt that they are sucking away that much data ... just imagine how many petabyte data they would get on a daily basis, how the hell would they every want to check all of this.
@Youkai You would think so about Google, too, but they do it every day. Usually with AI services, but it's still being done. It's a flawed system too, if you think about it.

Staying with 7. It's the best version of Windows by far. And as an ex-MSFT support technician from the 90s who has seen them all - I'd know. I couldn't care less if MSFT doesn't update it. I turned off updates (with the exception of Security Essentials) years ago. If you know what you're doing, you don't get hacked. I know what I'm doing.

And unless you are into child porn or are running an illegal operation from your PC, you really shouldn't be worried about MSFT's data collection. What do you do that could possibly be of interest to their employees or your government? If you can answer that question with legit concerns, you shouldn't use ANY commercially-available OS, smartspeaker or smartphone. Not Linux, not MacOS, not Windows, not Alexa, and certainly not Android. Oh, and you'll want to get a Tempest-grade tinfoil hat ASAP.

There seem to be those who are the "Use Windows or don't use anything" kind of people. Let me tell you something - it's not so much the fact that they collect data that is the problem, it's what they do with it. Those who don't know won't understand.

If you absolutely have to use Windows 10, I recommend looking at the LTSC versions. Technically, you can only get LTSC with an enterprise license, but an unactivated Windows 10 will continue to work without issues; you just won't be able to set the wallpaper, and there's an "Activate Windows" watermark in the bottom right.

I've been testing Win10 LTSC 1809 on some systems, and among other things:
  • No Cortana.
  • Calculator is Win7-style, not a Universally Worthless Program.
  • Windows Store is completely gone AFAIK, though there are still some Universally Worthless Programs installed by default, e.g. Settings.
  • Major OS upgrades happen much less often. (Next one will probably be Fall 2020.)

It's the greatest tragedy that's come with the age of technology -- when someone, somewhere has access to what you do and who you are, and it's often times for profit. Sadly, I'm already on Windows 10, and apart from telemetry, my absolute biggest gripe is the shitty Settings menu/app/whateverTFmicrosoftcallsthisshit. Sadly though, new hardware and software primarily supports Windows 10, and if it hasn't ditched Win7/8.1 support, it probably will in another one or two years. I don't usually care for government intervention, but telemetry is one of those things where I think government should have stepped in early on and told businesses: "Yeah... but fuck no!" But I'm sure certain branches of government also get a hard-on for it too, so.... here we are. Welcome to the FuTuRe!

I personally switched to Manjaro on my laptop some time ago. Most of the assumptions regarding Linux being easier to use are inaccurate, and in fact the opposite can be true in many cases e.g. installing from the package manager being simpler than having to download and install something manually.

It's still not quite there as a main gaming OS - I use Windows 10 on my main gaming desktop for this reason. But if you only use your machine for occasional gaming like with my non-gaming laptop, Proton has helped Linux gaming make huge strides. It may even be better than Windows 10 for legacy titles.

If you want to be serious about privacy/security, I think the only real option is switching to Linux.

So what do they do with the Data that you don't want them to do with it ?

And okay Google also uses your data but I don't believe that they are checking everything close ...
Looking at search requests shouldn't be much data and automatically checking some cookies or whatever shouldnt be to much work either but going trough all your stuff on your pc and following whatever you do ... doubt there are computers capable of handling this with millions of users.

If the Police or whatever wants to get your Data they can easily get into your system (old OS versions are probably much easier for them then new ones) or they could just knock on your door and take your stuff.

Not to long ago I read about a new law (not sure if it was here in Germany or somewhere else) which allowed Police to break into your House/flat and temper with your computer to gain acces withouth you noticing oO
I was rather shocked that Police is allowed or is supposed to be allowed to break in...

It's more the principle that Microsoft are gathering information with very little information about what, how, or why. Disclaimers rarely suffice, nor does hiding it away in small print.

Data farming shouldn't be allowed. It should be up to the individual what they choose to share. It should also be put, in as much Layman's as possible, what all the data is that is collected and sent online via certain services, and whether the person agrees to use these services or an alternative.

This data collecting is not going to keep criminals from pirating or hacking computers. Windows has been hacked, infected with viruses, injected with trojans, and pirated more than other operating systems I know. It's not that it never happens under Mac OS, Linux, or other OSes; it's just that Windows is very unstable, and gets even more so with each new version. It's still relying on NT (literally "New Technology") which has now become OT ("Old Technology"), and the only way for Microsoft to make it more stable without applying numerous patches is a rewrite of the code. Unfortunately, that would take a lot of time and money, and Microsoft is not willing to take that step. So, here we are, putting all our files in a fancy building with a foundation that is steadily eroding...

Good thing most of my private and important stuff is on my Ubuntu laptop. :)

i dont give a shit if the support is ending. Peple think that you have to stop using it after Microsoft says so. lol Noobs....
im still gonna use xp and 7. I have 10 on 3 laptops and 10 is ass with all the forced updates making the os unstable. I always preferred to not patch my windows except for small security patches. How about you let me press my f8 Microsoft... dumb fucks taking away the best way to get to safemode. now you need boot media. and dont even get me started on secure boot. Pretty soon viruses wont even run on xp. lol Windows xp pro makes good file servers also.

I'm going to use Windows 10 out of pure spite, because it's been super stable for me, so yeah, not going back, nope.

@the_randomizer do you leave your pc on 24/7? try that and tell me if its still stable. Actually i dont think you can run 10 for months without it restarting and installing those stupid updates.
XP sp2 would be more stable if it did not have that heap leak issue. i have found 7 to be more stable then xp. of course the most stable i have used so far is windows server 2008r2.

@the_randomzer Don't do it out of spite. Do it because you can do better with it than most people can. Heck, maybe you can make it more secure! ...Maybe. I don't know. I just simply don't want to try it.

I don't run PC's 24/7, I don't have to, but come on, if I choose to prefer one OS over the other, fine, but don't be so bloody condescending about it.

my bad bruh i did not mean to sound like a douche bag lol. truth is, we all will have to use something eventually if you want to run something modern. You almost cant even browse the web in windows 98 because of the switch to more secure encription. Most sites wont even load. same thing is gonna happen in xp because the web browsers will lack a way to decrypt https certs.

Windows XP is limited to 3.75 GB unless you have the 64-bit version, so yeah, no thanks. Windows 7 used to be good until it went to hell in a hand basket and refused to wake up after going into screensaver mode. Never did figure out the cause, so I said "screw this" and went with 10.

i would not build a modern pc and use xp. Id use it in a virtual machine tho. I have mostly older hardware and only a few post 2012 machines. Co-workers know im the "computer guy" as they call me and they keep giving me stuff like old laptops. some of them think 2014 laptops are old lol.

I actually have used windows 10 enterprise way more then the base version (home) Enterprise is probably the most stable windows 10.
