World of Goo....my favorite Humble Bundle game!

Years ago....all the way back in 2012 I bought a couple of Humble Indie Bundles. My main reason for jumping in was that you pay what you wanted for the offered bundle and you could specify for which platform you wanted your order to count. Obviously I was in for Linux! Power to the Penguin! :D

In one of those bundles there was a hidden gem (for me anyway) and that game was: World Of Goo! I have spend many hours building the insane structures required to solve the puzzles. The music was awesome too and perfectly fit the level you are playing. Sometimes it's sad, feels like a Hollywood red carpet show, and when it's intense so did the music. There was also sort of a story about a big corporation...and the signs explaining what to do if you got stuck had some of the best jokes!

So why did I get to play this game again? Well...a few years ago there was the ability to import the games from the humble bundle into steam. But it did not include the Linux version unfortunately. Now the Steam Deck is out and that runs Linux with the Proton library....lot's of "windows only" games are becoming playable on Linux! Awesome! And I just tried World Of Goo a few days ago and it launched without any issue at all! I am not even really sure if it's the windows version or native Linux....but it runs and that's what counts!

Now with steam there are a few extra's in the form of achievements. While there are not that many for World Of Goo, in fact there are just 8 of them! But actually getting them is going to take MANY hours of playing each and every level all over again. This time not just trying to solve the puzzle but also staying within the OCD objective of the level! This could mean save a certain level of goo balls, finish in a really short time...something like that. Maybe only that ...I have not looked at all of them yet.
The achievements for the OCD flags are per chapter, or world, of which there are 5. And then if you get all 5 of them you get an extra one for that. And there seems to be a secret part somewhere since there is a special achievement for it!

At least I got the first one for completing all levels the "normal" way! I doubt I will get all....since in some levels I really stretch the limits and barely make it through. But who knows...hahaha.

And that was it for now. Happy new year everyone! :D

I don't know that it ever quite could be classified as hidden gem as it was one of the early indie darlings. Though it has lacked some of the staying power in later years some other things got, so less hidden gem and more forgotten gem.

Also *remembers when humble bundle used to have nice DRM free games on multiple systems*... oh well.

World of Goo is a hidden gem?

I remember getting the free demo in my Wii back in the day.
I actually have it installed as a wad file, but it's been since 2010 and I've never ever played it past the second stage I think?... the one that you must build upwards with a brownish/sunset background.

Anyway, it's nice to read about it again, as I've totally forgot about it.
If anything, I too remember And Yet It Moves being in the same category, that is, a "hidden gem".

Do you have other "hidden gems" you xan talk about? Kinda made me curious.

Well...maybe it wasn't a "Hidden gem" for everyone....but I did say it was for me right? ^_^

I think on one of my 12-14 wii's (don't ask) the demo version was installed as well...but never really played it. Mostly because I have only played it on my Linux desktop with a mouse (or even TrackBall already). I expect a very different experience if you have to play it with the wiimote ofcourse.

To be honest I can't even say why I like it so much. It's very possible that being in love for the first time around the time I bought the World Of Goo bundle plays a role in the memory of playing it. :D
While I have bought a couple of Humble Bundles...I barely remember any of the other games. There is one other called "Crayon Physics Deluxe". You solve puzzles by drawing a line...and it becomes part of the physics so a ball can roll to some other place. There was also "Osmos" where you are kind of a single cell organism and you absorb smaller cells than you...and you need to avoid hitting the one's bigger than you or you die.

Maybe there were better games in there...I don't know. I think there were a few "windows only" that I never really played at all during that time. Maybe now with Proton in steam I can give them a try. I see that "And Yet It Moves" is in my steam library....I imported all the games from the bundle's I bought. Installed it now! So I will give it a try later ^_^

EDIT: Just tried to launch "And Yet It Moves" on Linux with Steam...and unfortunatly it does not want to launch. If there never was a Linux version of it (don't know) then that is why I never played it.
