Baldur's Gate 3 Announces Official Release Date, PS5 Version

The wait is nearly over, adventurers. After two and a half years in early access development, Larian Studios has unveiled the release date for the full version of their continuation of the Baldur's Gate franchise; on August 31st, 2023, Baldur's Gate 3 will be officially released for PC, Mac, and PlayStation 5. The announcement comes with the reveal of full controller support, split-screen co-op, and the ability to transfer game saves between different platforms all available on release day. Those who purchased the game in early access prior to launch will also receive a free upgrade to the digital deluxe version of the game on release day, gaining access to a variety of in-game, and out of game, digital goodies including a digital OST and Artbook, character sheets for the game's characters, and items inspired by Larians other flagship RPG, Divinity.

Released alongside this announcement was a new trailer for the game, highlighting a bit more of the main story and showing off one of the three main antagonists parties will be campaigning against, the necromancer General Ketheric Thorm, who will be voiced by renowned actor J.K. Simmons. Larian Studios also promised an early look at the two other central antagonists of the game within the coming months.

Baldur's Gate 3 is currently available in early access, and the physical collector's edition is available for pre-order.

my 970 will cry hard

Edit: Also, this game have the deluxe versions bullshit. An asshole move very common this days, nothing can be done about that...

(except piracy............)
There's nothing wrong with the deluxe version in this case. It doesn't provide any meaningful gameplay advantages/extras, and they're giving it away as a free upgrade to anybody who buys it during early access.

The trailer seems to confirm local co-op (which isn’t a surprise considering this was a feature in other Larian console ports), so I’m as happy as can be. Me and the missus will be adventuring soon enough.

What about the Xbox Series? Why only PS5?
Becasue they didn't have enough people to do it at the same time as pc, mac and ps5? It's not like the game is exclusive to any console anyway. Maybe they'll port it to xbox at some point, maybe not. Maybe they hate xbox, who knows?

Let's see if this third game/franchise revival in RPG/hack and slash world can stick the landing.

So far
Diablo 3... yeah I guess at least it was not the mobile version.
Sacred 3... oh dear.
Dungeon Siege III... can't win them all.
Dungeons & Dragons: Dark Alliance (don't know if it strictly counts as Dark Alliance 3)... ouch.
Don't know if we count Gauntlet: Seven Sorrows or Gauntlet 2014 in this but.... eh.

At this point I mostly just assume all such efforts are going to spit in the face of their namesakes and instead look at what the new franchises are doing.

In my own, humble opinion, BG3 has been a very worthy continuation. It leans further into following the D&D ruleset directly than the original series of games do, but still keeps the spirit of exploration and adventure that those classics had. I've been following the early access development very closely, and been quite happy with all of the progress this games made.

When was Baldur's Gate ever a hack n' slash? It's always been a cRPG-type series, which is a genre Larian is quite experienced with.

I suppose not in the sense some of those are (though in the purely technical sense diablo 1 is a turn based game, why when it lagged back when it would be a fast motion version of what it did), and some would bring up the dialogue options in this as well. That said I tend to play them to scratch the same itch and play fast enough that things are essentially real time, and enough had turn based options, puzzles and such as well as being based on all the same sorts of lore that it gets very blurry for me.

actually, the Xbox situation has already been clarified. They are developing it too, but they ran into some technical difficulties in regards to split screen co-op (my guess would be because of the underpowered Xbox Series S. Remember that the Switch version of Divinity Original Sin 2 didn't include split screen co-op due to how underpowered the switch was. Probably a similar situation here) which is why they haven't officially announced it and its release date yet.
