How much longer do you think the Switch will last?

The Switch is incredibly successful and saved Nintendo. It's 6 years old now and Nintendo claimed a year ago that the Switch is still in the middle of its lifecycle. The heavily speculated Switch Pro was apparently real but got cancelled.

I can understand that Nintendo is reluctant to release new hardware. The Wii U failed, there are chip shortages and the Switch is still making money. At the same time, gaming companies are always working on new hardware and the Switch was released on outdated hardware, hardware which is far more outdated today. Emulation has become a big enough problem that soon some games will have anti-emulation code built into them.

It will not be this November for sure, we would be getting rumors already if that was the case, also the switch sales forecast is very high, so the earlier date possible for the next nintendo console would be March 2024.

But a new console do not mean the end of the old one. Switch may last for years after the successor's release.

I think Nintendo would be smart to recognize the massive amount of people that already own an OG Switch of some sort, when the successor releases. It wouldn't be too hard to let the Switch 2 link up with a Switch 1 for dual screen play. Effectively making the Wii U dream a reality without having to force consumers to buy a costly controller with built in screen. Of course due to the nature of that goal this time, they would have to always make 2 screen play optional and never a requirement.

I thought about this and given that before the Switch was officially announced, we heard rumours from reliable sources about a Wii U successor which will function as a hybrid console and that we have not heard such rumours about a Switch successor yet, Nintendo probably won't announce anything this year.

I think due to the massive sales, at least this year it will still go strong. Next year is another matter entirely, I am sure next year we will see some news.

The UK CMA eluded to nintendo switch online being available on another device at some point.

"Nintendo’s cloud gaming service is
only available on the Nintendo Switch device and (Redacted)"

More likely than not that the redacted text names another device rathee than saying something like, 'and no other devices' but whether or not that is a switch successor? Who knows? Could be another device that is already available.

Imagine still playing games on a mostly 720p handheld in 2025. Surely they're working on the next one already.

Well there's already rumors of a possible successor based on datamining of the firmware. I bet, 3 more years since it's still printing money well. Nintendo has to go by tradition of using a 2 year old chip when it comes out.
