The successor to the popular Meta Quest 2 virtual reality headset has just been announced. Mark Zuckerberg revealed the Meta Quest 3, which is a "next-gen" VR device, promising twice the power over the previous headset. Meta promises that the Quest 3 will also be more comfortable than the 2, with a slimmer profile. It'll also support hand-tracking right out of the box, so you can use it without any controllers. The Quest 3 is set to launch this fall for $499.99, and with its release, Meta will be giving the previous generation Quest 2 a price drop to $299.99.

If the device interested me, and required an account in some service, I'd just set up an account for it.

Data and privacy concerns. Facebook and Meta are notorious for milking data out of their consumers. Even an account that is only for the device can usually be traced back to more significant accounts, thus nullifying the purposes of the dummy account.

I'm curious to see how powerful it will be standalone and if it will be able to offer graphics experiences close to PCVR or PSVR2. (probably not, but it will be cool to see the jump compared to Quest 2)

Also, it will be interesting to see how Quest 2 fares from now on and if it manages to have a long life like the original Quest.

And at least around here, it's certainly not from a lack of trying, but the chances to even try out any vr headset for anything is entirely too few and far between. Pretty much had to go to one of the malls on the richer part of town to even find a shop that specializes in vr-enabled entertainment. Surprise, it's all glorified mobile phone gaming shit. 50+ games and not one station was even equipped to enable playing Half Life Alyx.

The only retail shops even carrying headsets now are all selling Oculus crap and of course are fixed displays so you can't even try them on to see if they'd even fit. With the size of my noggin, that's a really frustrating problem. So even now in current year, I can only say I've had experience with a grand total of two such instances and sets of gear. The OG htc vive and the original PS VR.

The HTC vive was in a shop that no longer exists anymore (Fry's electronics). It sold for $700 and required a setup space bigger than all of my living room; it also needed half a dozen sensors that sold for an additional $70 each. Ultimately what let it down was that it was almost a full second of delay between me moving my head and it registering in the lenses. To say that got me nauseous quickly is an understatement. Nevermind how offensive the pricing was for the experience it did give.

Had a grand total of two sessions with the original ps vr; only the latter, which was a Sony sponsored event of all things, allowed me enough time to actually fiddle with the headset enough to get it to be comfortable. It was decidedly low res, but it was at least dramatically more responsive. Problem is, none of that matters in the end because it's locked to the PS4, and Sony would literally rather go out of business than open the stupid thing up to be accessible anywhere else.

Of course, valve would rather I spend $1200 for an Index. And its resolution being more demanding than the 4K monitor I did end up with, would require me to get a flagship gpu the moment it launches to have anything resembling the 90+fps requirement to not hurl my lunch everywhere.

No, you don’t need a headset to purchase the game… Valve can’t verify that, it makes NO SENSE. None of what you’re spouting is making any sense. You do not need a current flagship GPU. Hell, a 2080 is more than enough for a smooth experience. If you are talking about your PREFERENCE, then that’s an entirely different conversation.

You can just buy a Quest 1/2 and play Alyx on it, no need for sensors. You seem to be very oblivious about how VR has progressed. The Quest 1/2 both have inside-out tracking, which means you do not need external sensors. So you could buy a second hand Quest 1 and use a GTX 980 and be good to go. The headset can be as cheap as €/$150

Great news!. I am really interested in continuing to bet on virtual reality!
More games, more services, better hardware!

There is still a long way to go before VR is affordable to everyone, but it is worth the effort.
