Oh ok. Well considering that these will be available on desktop computers, and presumably the store will be built into Windows, I'd say they are competitors.
Why? They have no reason to be, and technically speaking they're not even selling to the same crowds (they don't even have the same games). Heck, I doubt Microsoft's even looking at Steam and vice versa, there's no competition to be had. The two simply co-exist, but one's not going to affect the sales of the other.

They're selling online games to people. If people who are new to gaming on computers buy a computer with windows 8 and find it already has a way of buying games, they don't have to (and therefore may not bother to) look elsewhere to get their fix. If the service is popular, more publishers will want to publish their software on the microsoft service. Hence more games will become available. The more games that become available, the less likely people are to seek out alternative solutions to buying games online...

Just because two companies are selling in the same field doesn't mean that they're competitors, and even if in the future they do have some new and enticing way to rival Steam, it's irrelevant, simply because this isn't then. Plus, I don't see anyone turning away from Steam to buy Minesweeper or Solitaire, and in a less jokingly, BlazBlue. People would just get both until they have some reason to rival each other, which isn't now.

There are two types of market competition: competing for new customers to the sector, and competing for existing companies in the sector.

My argument was clearly focused on the first, and your response was clearly based on the second...

Not really, as I said, they're appealing to different crowds, I don't think they're competing at all for that reason. That's like...up, hold on
That's like saying The App store or Google Play is competing with Steam.

Why? My problem is that you haven't said anything to suggest that why they're competing, you've just been saying how they are.

All these games are pretty shit.

I mean, Fruit Ninja? Really, Microsoft? That won't make me switch to Windows 8.

Bring over Halo 3, ODST and Reach and I might consider.
