Homebrew (Random Question) physical differences of a ds flashcart and a gateway

So, just a random question I have. Is there any difference between your standard r4 and a gateway? Or is it just software? This is just for curiosity's sake:yay:

The gateway has a nub on the corner and an LED.
And they emulate different chips.

Standard DS Flashcarts only can run DS games and are the still the best option to play DS games.
Gateways play 3DS games but can potentially ban your console as it can be detected.

The gateway blue card is pretty much a cheap r4 clone. The red card is very much different. It mimics the 3ds cart chipset (through a cfw only though) not sure how far off from the real chip set it is though.

Only if one uses public headers for their ROMs. That's why people typically buy some bargain bin game to dump the header from for use with their ROMs.
