p1ng's Nintendo Switch hands-on impressions

Hi guys, I recorded a quick audio log of my thoughts immediately after attending the Nintendo switch hands on preview. The footage taken is from my phone and nothing special, just filler for the sake of showing what the event was like that is relooped halfway through.

I also just saw the prices of the switch peripherals and games, frankly I was disgusted. I felt that I needed to record an extra ten minutes of audio to voice my concerns. The prices for the games and accessories for the switch are purely Nintendo gouging its fanbase. Nothing can justify the prices here, in my opinion if these prices are not lowered by a good 30% across the board the switch is DOA and will fail.

That's what the pro controller is for. But I do agree that a joycon with a regular D-pad would be very nice indeed.

I just want to make a note. I don't like the price of the controllers. I understand it... But I don't like it.

I would -prefer- them to be cheaper, but I hope either 3rd Party or manufacturing makes the controlers cheaper.

I mean, for using the console in handheld mode.

Same here, I understand their reasoning. But from a consumer standpoint, they're not reasonably priced.

I agree... Sadly I blame the Smart Phone boom for people not understanding how much Technology actually costs in modern days.

Again.. I really don't like the price. I really don't. But because I can understand the reasoning behind it. *I mean hell.. It has an entire Kinect in -half- a controller* I will be willing to pay the price if/when I need to/can.

i'm surprised by the reaction. are us prices the only normal ones? 60 for games, 20 or so for gear, 13 or so for cases? these seem the same as what we've got now. and joycons are a pair of controllers, not a single controller. so yeah, 80 bucks for two controllers makes sense to me, especially given the tech shoved in them.

what a confusing post.

I see a weird vibe going on. We're criticising the pricing as a big mistake because we love Nintendo, not because we hate it. You can lock yourself in an anti-Nintendoomed bubble if you'd like, I personally would rather point out the issues loud and clear while they can still be addressed at launch. Sites like ours, Youtubers and bloggers were invited for a reason - to hear the unfiltered voice of gamers which is unavailable on, say, IGN, or another large gaming outlet. I don't want this to crash and burn, but if what you want is a Wii U 2.0 then go nuts - don't criticise.

Idk about that as they seemed to advertise it that once you plug the Nintendo Switch in the dock you immediately get to see image/screen on your tv/monitor so literally plug & play. Nothing about the dock/ Nintendo Switch being in a sleep mode before inputing data to the TV.
That's literally what a TV's inputs are designed for. If you think it's necessary to switch a TV off before changing what's plugged into it, you've been misinformed.
With HDMI the TV must even be on before the connection is fully completed, as there is a negotiation step between the thing you're connecting and the TV.

p1ngpong ??? Is the p1ngpong who arrived 10 years ago on gbatemp messing around like a crazy bitch about the DS-Xtreme ? I can't believe that kid managed to survive until now. Internet is something special.
To hell with you sir I am still a crazy bitch, and if your shitty switch had a DS-Xtreme in its innards it would be better for it! :gun:

I'm surprised nobody mentioned this:
* MARKETING. The price sends a signal to the Great Unwashed that this thing is special. That may or may not be true but that is besides the point. Don't worry, Nintendo will have no choice but to reduce the prices in future, to remain competitive. The accountants will use the first 6+ months of sales to guide the price changes. I have never come across any new console with sane pricing, let alone sane pricing on accessories at launch (and often not years after launch too). Switch is no exception. No doubt Nintendo will sell it as "2 in one" and so on and so on...so these 'premium' image-making prices are utterly predictable to me.

The BETTER VIBRATION/FEEDBACK sounds ike an extremely useful thing to have. It could enhance so many games. Definitely one of things that sounds good to me, if it's as good as the first impressions seem to make out.

If the Switch is really underwhelming so far, why not cancel that pre-order? I was taken aback that the pre-order is only being 'reconsidered' rather than outright cancelled. There seems like there is little point of buying something early if it doesn't particularly excite you. The only reality any corporation knows is the reality of not getting its money. When a company doesn't receive funds that its forecasting monkeys predicted would come, things change quickly.

So protest. By not buying.

Chances are that the TV actually negotiates with the dock, not the Switch itself, which would cut down on connection time and possibly remove the power rail from the equation altogether - it's not necessary for a handshake with the tablet. Alternatively the power rail is just not connected and the device always draws power from the battery circuit, which in turn charges via USB-C. This is hardly an issue, really.

Still not worth it for a remake with barely any changes except a few items and useless characters, a new smooth as hell 30 fps!!! *cough* battle mode.

If you call possibly 16 new courses and the battle mode everyone has been wanting "barely any changes", than I'm not sure what you want.

Besides.. I bet you'd double dipped on Game of the Year editions or Last of US Remastered.

There's also 1 thing @p1ngpong didn't mention that I might see happen. TV's getting damaged, because someone thought it's OK to just remove/add an input device while it's on.
Actually that is one thing myself and Fast noticed while we were queued up to play Zelda, when the switch is removed from the dock the signal to the TV gets immediately cut. There is no placeholder image or screensaver or anything else. This pretty much confirms that apart from a couple of USB connections and a HDMI link the dock has nothing else in its innards. Could this possibly damage TVs? I have no idea, you would think this sort of thing would be a consideration but who knows really.

@p1ngpong This is out of topic, but, what phone did you use to record the video? It looks good.

I just used my phone to take vids, it is an LG G4 and I was filming in 1080p. It can record in 4k but I didn't record in that because it would have taken me too long to render a vid in 4K. Besides I was always planning on just doing a little audio log of the day and my impressions.

This may have been asked before, but of all the games you played on TV and off TV, was there any difference in performance, fps and such?

There are reports that BoTW runs a bit better on handheld mode than Docked.. But those right now are up for debate as there are plenty of other sources saying that it was not the problem.

The biggest change for most games seem to be downgrading from 1080p and 900p to 720p while on the tablet.
