NSP doesn't allow this DevMenu which is risky or the new Tinfoil allows this.
Maybe mention its a better option for you because its obviously not the best or easiest solution

Fair enough-- but for people that dont really care about online (eg, banning is not something to be concerned about), freeshopping is totally a possibility there, and with devmenu/tinfoil, one can install arbitrary NSPs.

Installed native would be easier to launch. Just pick it from the home menu.

The assumption was that this would be the superior solution *AFTER* such a solution becomes very mature/easy. I already lamplit that this is not currently the case.

Currently, there is no "good" way to use NSP files. (Layered FS is a bit touchy, from what I hear.) As such, there is no real "drive" to make the necessary converters. However, once there is a reliable way to use NSP files, their obvious superiority to XCI files will make a converter almost certain.

RE; SX for unbanned

XCI has benefits for faking a legit title for online play. To do online play, you need an unbanned console. If you dont care about online play, NSP is the superior offering as you keep the slot working as intended, and dont have to muck around with the emulation silliness.
???? there is a good way to use NSP files, it's called SX OS. rnx will be able to install nsp files as well. it's not as easy as much converting nsp to xci either. nsp is just a psf0 which breaks it into ncas, so you'd need to be able to make a xci, no conversion, you just need to be able to go from romfs/exefs to xci. thats why theres no public homebrew nsps, because youd need romfs/exefs to nca, then to nsp. the only way to do that is from the sdk afaik.

Fair enough mate. I don't care about online so i will just download the xci for future games i buy. Just like i did with my current games.
Im hoping for a mixture of options.
Hopefully Tinfoil will be a good option for loading NSP. Unsure if its as risky as layeredfs Devmenu

Don't forget it's a pretty easy thing for Nintendo to stop allowing all these downloads from CDN with banned certs.

If you prefer NSP over XCI then make sure you grab as many as possible in case that happens soon.

I would be careful assuming that. I think it is equally likely that the infrastructure that allows banned certs to continue using system updates and updating games they own to newer versions uses the same CDN. Which could result in a large refactor requirement to split up these capabilities and stop banned certs downloading the CDN.

This may be worth the time and money for nintentdo, then again, it may not.

It would be very surprising if they left it unchanged and allowed another "freeshop" situation for the duration of the Switch's life. It's already surprising they didn't make it more robust in the first place after the 3DS fiasco.

I'm 100% sure they want to fix it, I was more leaning towards the decision they must make to recreate infrastructure, vs just letting the small (relative to everyone who owns a switch) number of people who don't care about being banned being allowed to download from the CDN.

Again--
Allows the slot to continue to function as intended. EG-- you can insert (or dump) cartridges, and it will still work as expected. This is not the case when you are redirecting all function calls to the emulated device. Also, there is no kludgey emulation engine doing that redirection working behind the scenes of the title.

Are you saying that with SX OS you can't insert a cartridge? How come you're the first person to mention it?

Your description isn't factual, it's emotive. You're trying to hack our brains.

An example of how the above would be very useful: Think back to the glory days of the Wii with the various USB loaders, and the disc dumping feature. Once dumped, you could play the game using the loader just fine. Now, hold that thought-- Wouldnt it be awesome to be able to dump the title for native installation? EG-- you insert the cartridge, and run a homebrew program that reads the cartridge's FS, and on-the-fly creates and installs an NSP derived from the cartridge's data. You can then give the borrowed/rented cart back, and off you go.

No, that would be absolutely awful installing it on the Wii home screen like that. Much better to keep the game within USB loader where you can filter them easily. Your benefit of borrowing a game, dumping it & giving it back is absolutely the same in either case.

What's the real benefit of xci over only nsp apart from the banning situation, and therefore of having SX?

It's much easier to add and remove xci on your micro sd card than it is to install and uninstall nsp. It won't even come close until we get emunand.

Since they will be seeing all the hundreds, probably more like thousands, downloading game after game using the same cert, it kinda makes you wonder what the reactions are like behind the scenes. I bet a few people got shouted at

Probably, though the real issue here was the Tegra vuln which wasn't related to nintendo. I'm of the opinion that they wont patch this as it isn't worth their time. But i'm totally ready to be wrong haha.

I always maintain, though have no empirical evidence, that console hacking is a very niche activity.
Even with things like the 3DS, noone I know apart from me has a hacked 3DS apart from one other guy which I set up for them.
You've got around 20 million Switches in the wild.
Now, most 'pirates' are going to be going here, Reddit, Discord or a handful of other related sites.
How many unique users do all these sites contain (<5000?) I dunno but there's a lot of familiar faces across the board.
Add in the causals who lurk or simply get their friend to hack for them - another few thousand maybe. Maybe well off the mark here.
Most people just want to play a handful of AAA games and a couple cheap $5 indies, they're not bothered with jigs, RCM etc etc.
Just saying, as a percentage of 20M, probably very small so sure, perhaps N aren't as troubled as we may think.

With the nsp installing possible with this CFW, it will be also possible to install updates for games right?
I just want to be able to use my pro controller with binding of isaac, without updating my switch =(

It'll be almost disappointing when it releases, just to see the end of this brilliant, yet shitty thread.

Then again, pretty sure Chary is spending most of her time cradling her computer, rocking back and forth muttering "stayontopicstayontopicstayontopicstayontopicstayontopicstayontopicstayontopic" over and over, so it'll be nice to give her a break.
