[RELEASE] Trails in the Sky FC Evolution English Patch

2awXyXE.png

The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky (英雄伝説VI 空の軌跡) is a Japanese role-playing video game developed by Nihon Falcom. It is commonly referred to as Trails in the Sky First Chapter (英雄伝説 空の軌跡FC) to distinguish itself from the rest of the games in the Trails in the Sky series. The game is the first game in trilogy of titles, which also includes Trails in the Sky Second Chapter and Trails in the Sky the 3rd, and collectively, the titles create the sixth entry in the larger The Legend of Heroes series of video games.

A redesigned version of the game titled The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky FC Evolution was released in Japan for the PlayStation Vita on June 11, 2015. Evolution renovated the old designs and user interface and incorporated several new features such as voice acting and animation in scenes, additional illustrations, and enhanced battle tactics.

About
This patch provides a full English patch for Trails in the Sky FC Evolution (known as Sora no Kiseki FC Evolution in Japan). It applies the XSEED translation from the PC version of Trails in the Sky (with Evolution-exclusive content translated by our team). This patch would not exist without XSEED's translation; please buy the original game to support them: [Steam] [GOG] [Humble]. Compared to the original Trails in the Sky, the Evolution version includes the following changes:
  • Fully voiced story, with over 30,000 voiced lines
  • Redone artwork with more character portraits and event images
  • Arranged soundtrack
  • Text backlog
  • Hold X to speed up battles animations, cutscenes by 4x
  • Greatly improved text font
  • UI improvements

Known Issues
  • Text will sometimes overflow slightly past the text box (but it should never go off screen and be unreadable).
  • DLC is now supported with rePatch, but some item names and descriptions may still be in Japanese.
If you find any other bugs, please email them to Snigs at snkfcevo (dot) eng (at) gmail (dot) com, and we will probably update the patch as we work on the other games.

System Requirements
To run this translation patch, you need:
  • A PlayStation Vita or PlayStation TV running firmware version 3.60 or lower. For Vitas, buying from eBay is a good way to ensure that the version is 3.60 or lower and capable of running Henkaku, although they can be more expensive. For PSTVs, buying new on US Amazon seems to guarantee a firmware version below 3.60 and they are quite cheap at the moment.
  • A Japanese copy of Sora no Kiseki FC Evolution; physical or digital will work. It must be the Japanese version of the game, and it must be updated to the latest patch, version 1.02.
Installation (with rePatch)
Two files need to be patched: eboot.bin and data.psarc. Please ensure that your Japanese copy of Trails in the Sky FC Evolution is patched to v1.02, the latest version. The translation patch only supports the latest version.
  1. Install and enable the latest version of rePatch (2.71 alpha or later) if you do not have it already (instructions here)
  2. Download the translation patch from the link below.
  3. If you have the physical version of the game, you may optionally use NoNpDrm to rip the game to your Vita so that the game card isn't needed to play the game (instructions here).
  4. Use FAGDec (download here) and do the following steps to generate a decrypted eboot.bin:
Now run FAG Dec, select the desided game using X button and then press X button again on DECRYPT ALL(DONE). Press O to get back to main menu and press START button and select START DECRYPT(SELF) to start decrypting.
  5. In VitaShell, copy the following files to your computer:
ux:0/FAGDec/patch/PCSG00488/eboot.bin (if you are missing this file, make sure you installed the latest game patch, v1.02, from PSN before running FAGDec)
  6. You will need to obtain a decrypted copy of the data.psarc file. Browse to ux0:app/PCSG00488 (for digital) or gro0:app/PCSG00488 (for physical).
  7. Press triangle, select Open decrypted. Press SELECT to open FTP server (switch it under START key if you have USB connection chosen). You must transfer over FTP, I've confirmed transferring over USB doesn't work and still gets the encrypted file.
  8. Using FTP client on PC, connect to vita, then copy either ux0:/app/PCSG00488/gamedata/data.psarc (for digital) or gro0:/app/PCSG00488/gamedata/data.psarc (for physical) to your PC.
  9. If you've followed every step correctly so far, you should now have a decrypted eboot.bin and data.psarc on your PC, ready to patch.
  10. Use xdelta to patch eboot.bin. Use the following settings under Apply Patch:
Patch: eboot-originalbgm.bin or eboot-evolutionbgm.bin from the downloaded patch, depending on which soundtrack you want the patched game to use. See the FAQ below for more information.
Source File: eboot.bin copied from your Vita.
Output File: anywhere, use eboot.bin for the filename.
  11. Use xdelta to patch data.psarc. Use the following settings under Apply Patch:
Patch: data.psarc.xdelta from the downloaded patch.
Source File: data.psarc copied from your Vita.
Output File: anywhere, use data.psarc for the filename.
  12. Copy the newly patched data.psarc and eboot.bin to the following locations:
    ux0:rePatch/PCSG00488/gamedata/data.psarc
    ux0:rePatch/PCSG00488/eboot.bin
  13. Close VitaShell and run the game.

Two files need to be patched: eboot.bin and data.psarc. Please ensure that your Japanese copy of Trails in the Sky FC Evolution is patched to v1.02, the latest version. The translation patch only supports the latest version.
  1. Download the patch from the link below.
  2. Connect the Vita to your PC via USB.
  3. You will need to use MaiDumpTool to dump and install the game in the following steps.
  4. In Mai, select Extract/Decrypt content - [PCSG00488][英雄伝説 空の軌跡FC Evolution] - Extract the game and decrypt eboot (incl. suprx). This may take around 15 minutes or so.
  5. In Mai, select Extract/Decrypt content - [PCSG00488][英雄伝説 空の軌跡FC Evolution] - Extract game patch and eboot (including suprx). This may take a couple of minutes.
  6. Return to the home menu and delete the game (back up save data first if necessary).
  7. In Mai, Install game from folder - PCSG0048.
  8. In Mai, Install patch from folder - PCSG00488_patch. Sometimes this process ends in a failure message, but it seems like it can be ignored safely.
  9. With the digital copy of the game installed, open VitaShell and copy the following files to your PC:
    ux0:app/PCSG00488/eboot.bin
    ux0:app/PCSG00488/gamedata/data.psarc
  10. Use xdelta to patch eboot.bin. Use the following settings under Apply Patch:
Patch: eboot-originalbgm.bin.xdelta or eboot-evolutionbgm.bin.xdelta from the downloaded patch, depending on which soundtrack you want the patched game to use.
  12. Copy the newly patched data.psarc from your PC back to ux0:app/PCSG0488/gamedata/, overriding the existing data.psarc. Copy the newly patched eboot.bin from your PC back to ux0:app/PCSG00488/, overriding the existing eboot.bin.
  13. Close VitaShell and run the game.

FAQs
  • I get an error when trying to launch the game!
Make sure that your original game is the Japanese version of Trails in the Sky Evolution, and that it's updated to version 1.02.
  • Will you work on Trails in the Sky SC Evolution or Trails in the Sky the 3rd Evolution?
Yes, they are planned eventually, but keep in mind that FC took over six months to complete. It's possible SC and 3rd won't require as much time as FC, but there's no way to tell for sure.
Update: SC is now released (http://gbatemp.net/threads/release-trails-in-the-sky-sc-evolution-english-patch.495971/#post-7819736)
  • Will you work on Trails to Zero (Zero no Kiseki) Evolution and Trails to Azure (Ao no Kiseki) Evolution?
Only if XSEED releases them on PC first. Again, please buy the Trails games on PC to support them and make that more likely.
  • Should I use the Original soundtrack or the Evolution soundtrack?
I believe that the original soundtrack is superior overall, based on what I've heard myself and from what I've read online. For newcomers to the series, I highly recommend selecting the original soundtrack. For those that have played the PSP or PC version before, the Evolution version is worth trying if you want a fresh take on the soundtrack; some people do prefer it, and there are some Evolution tracks that I prefer over the originals myself. You can switch eboot.bin at any time to switch the game soundtrack, so feel free to experiment.
  • My save files disappeared and I can't save the game.
This is a known issue with dumped games on the Vita, where you can't save after leaving the Vita on sleep for a while and then resuming. Follow these steps in order to fix.
  • Can I swap the X and O buttons (X to confirm, O to cancel)?
    Try this homebrew: https://gbatemp.net/threads/release-button-swap-plugin-for-taihen.453829/
Version History
The version of the translation patch you are currently running is shown when you first load the game (it looks like this). Please make sure you are running the latest version of the translation patch.

VersionDate ReleasedRelease Notes
1.1a (Latest version)July 26, 2018Updated to support rePatch and compatibility packs. No other changes;
the version will still display 1.1 when launching the game.
1.1July 8, 2017Fixes bugs with some broken shops and a few instances of untranslated dialogue
occurring later in the game. Compared to version 1.0, only data.psarc has been modified,
so users running version 1.0 only need to update data.psarc.

What's the difference between the mai version and the Nonpdrm/Physical + rePatch one?
Does it take up less space?
The difference should be the type of dump, mai one is already decrpyted so ppl said that sometimes it will led you to save bug or something (dunno about this since i just can applied the patch recently bcs of h-encore and rarely use Mai dump) while NoNpDRM is still encrypted so it should be more stable and bcs the game itself is still encrypted, it should be easier to transfer the save file to SC later on (just like you play with your own cartridge or PSN ver, while for Mai i think you should encrypted the save file fist and then do some step and you can finally transfer your save file). Ssoooo... Now that FC Evolution has version 1.1a that is compatible with NoNpDRM+rePatch -- any chance for a similar SC patch? Kinda weird having a rePatch-only FC and a Mai-only SC on the same system, not to mention save transfer workarounds...

I am sure 3.65 users would appreciate it too.
Just wait man, i believe that I saw the_database said that he is currently working on repatch one for SC, seems it is better to check on that thread first before asking here.

I did do the save file transfer when the patch first released so if that's the main difference I guess I'll pass for now Mai works perfectly fine for me.

I'd summarize the benefits of the new patching method as follows (most of them have been covered) -
  1. Save transfer is supported natively, no annoying workaround required.
  2. DLC is supported -- which includes item DLC (although these are currently untranslated), and the original BGM DLC which lets you toggle between original or evo BGM from the options menu in-game (as opposed to choosing from an eboot file with the mai method).
  3. If you encountered the mai bug where you can't save after the Vita was in sleep mode for a while, that bug will not occur with the NoNpDrm version. But there's also a workaround to prevent this from happening in the mai version.
  4. It's the only way to play the patch if your Vita is above 3.65.
So yeah, if you were currently playing the mai version and didn't have any issues with it, you're probably fine with continuing to play that version. But any users setting this up for the first time should use the new method.

Thanks! My OLED is still in 3.60 so I'll just keep using that since I haven't even set up Nonpdrm yet. My 3.68 slim I just keep it as stock as possible.
I just hope I can keep my save file in case I change the method I play it, which I think it should be no problem though.

Thanks for all the work on this patch and on SC. I just got this to work this morning.
I had a question about getting the DLC to work. When I tried to use the MAI dlc and followed the instruction where I got the repatch information(Provided here). None of the DLC would show up.

When I tried to use the DLC I downloaded from Nopaystation, I got it to appear but when I choose a dlc to open the game crashes. Any help would be appreciated.

Doesn't maidump work on 3.65? Don't understand why a NoNpDRM version is so necessary as the maidump versions work flawllessly without any crashes. What's the point? I'd rather see the devs work on 3rd Evo instead of wasting time on a NoNpDRM patch that isn't necessary to play the game.

Don't want to start a flame war, but aside from the fact that MaiDump (IMHO) is horrible considering its ELF reconstruction process (but that's just me, I'm not imposing my opinion on anyne) --

If there weren't any merit in NoNpDRM version, sure the devs woudn't bother to make FC 1.1a I assume? Mai install method is listed as "legacy" for FC now, and only NoNpDRM-compatible patch is available for download. Sure there's a reason for that?

Besides, I suspect adapting the patch from Mai ELF to NoNpDRM might be as simple as changing the respective offsets in the decrypted ELF to replace the embedded resources (Mai mutilates ELF by inserting pieces of its own code, so raw file offsets change).

Because mai is obsolete and it makes it easier to save transfer too. Just a good thing to have but not a necessity.

I summarized the benefits of NoNpDRM + rePatch in the FC thread. The last point is the most important to me, as there were users on 3.68 in that thread with no way to use the mai patch. This is a relatively low effort conversion and doesn't impact 3rd evo anyway, as that project is currently in testing, so I'm not actively working on it at the moment.

SC conversion to rePatch is in progress, but I've hit an issue -- I'm not able to locate one of the offsets that needed to be modified in order to fit a longer string. The offset exists in the mai eboot but not the FAGDec decrypted eboot (perhaps the offset value changed but it doesn't look like it should have). Still working on it.

Oh, I thought Maidumptool was installable on 3.68 + h-encore. My fault...

A question then: Will your 3rd release include a maidump patch or completely go NoNpDRM only? If so, pls consider a mai version as well. I'm on a very old Henkaku version that doesn't support NoNpDRM, so I'm asking. I personally also really like the flexibility to just mix your own soundtrack arrangement while unpacking/packing the psarc files myself.

3rd won't include mai. NoNpDRM + rePatch supports all the usual firmwares as far as I'm aware, and there's nothing you can do in mai that NoNpDRM + rePatch doesn't also do the same or better. Hence the movement #LetMaiDie.

Would you at least consider releasing the "naked" translated files so that one could replace them manually in the psarc file, once the patch is finalized? I mean that wouldn't be extra work would it? I mean it's one thing to support a better format, but another to actively prevent people from using the older format. Would providing a patch for mai increase your workload? What do you have to lose?

I understand how you prefer NoNpDRM, but why not also providing a patch for mai, I don't get it, especially since making a XDELTA patch is a painless process.

Weren't you the one saying a NoNpDRM version, something which a lot of people wanted and asked for, was useless? And now you come here for another personal request.

Nothing against you, but that's absolutely inconsistent.

Well, I misunderstood that a NoNpDRM version would take a lot of effort and as the earlier Maidump patches (FC, SC) have proven to be flawless i thought that that effort was pointless. I didn't know that maidump wasn't possible on 3.68 and h-encore.

My request may sound selfish, but as the devs of the patch have to work with a decrypted version of 3rd anyway to work with the games script files (most likely a maidump version) a maidump patch would be more or less a byproduct of that process. I would never ask for them to get out of their way for a patch for a antiquated dump method. But if it doesn't require additional work, why not offering a mai patch.

I already said that I'd like to make a OST remix mod for myself (consisting of Evo, original and aranged 3rd tracks). I did this for the two previous games and I'd like to do it again for 3rd as there are some glorious Falcom JDK Band arrangements for 3rd specifically. And that for a maidump version is necessary.

VitaShell allows you to decrypt game assets. You put modded decrypted game assets in the rePatch directory to use them. maidumptool isn't needed at all.

Supporting and maintaining multiple versions of the patch would obviously be more work and make things more complicated than needed. I've already uninstalled mai dump tool and the mai version of the game.

I already said that anything you can do with mai, you can do more easily with NoNpDRM + rePatch, and that includes everything you've described above. There's no reason for me to do more work because you can't be bothered to learn.

Everything about it seems a bit excessive, especially for replacing something that has proven to work flawlessly in the past (mai). I just feel like the entire "let's replace mai with NoNrpDRM" thing being propagated in the vita piracy community is basically like fixing something that isn't broken. I've played countless maidumps in almost 2 years and never experienced any bug or problem, so excuse my bewilderment towards everything that's going on in the community right now. It's your patch and I have no right to demand anything, but...

Just one thing: Will you at least provide the translated game assets/files once it's finalized so that I can at least insert them into the psarc file on my own, patching my own maidump version manually? Or is that too much to ask for as well? I just really want to play it as a maidump. In one way or another.

There's kinda a big difference in the eboot that maidump uses and the eboot that Fagdec makes. For one the eboot of maidump si dump from the vita's memory then maidump patches with it's custom code to make the game run a as homebrew, that is why it has porblems on some games especially Unity games where DLC won't work or gets save corruption every now eand then without a workaround. The Fagdec eboot is a proper decrypted eboot that you can modify and repack back like we do on the PS3 eboots. So I don't think it's a step backward since we are getting proper eboots to modify.

It's not really the end, if the devs can port the SC/FC evo eboot patches from mai to Fagdec eboot, nobody is preventing you from porting a patched Fagdec eboot to mai since thay can be reversible, its just the devs decide to use the proper eboot from now on.

If I'll be somehow able to convert the 3rd patch to maidump myself it's OK for me and work I'd gladly put into. So far I thought it wasn't possible to revert it back to maidump. I just find maidump for games below 3.61 ectremely reliable.

Edit: Forgot to ask... How do I revert the Fagdec Eboot to a mai Eboot?
