Sony to end support for the PlayStation Store on PS3, PSP, Vita

After rumors began brewing that Sony might finally put an end to PlayStation Store access on some of its older systems, the company has finally confirmed what some fans feared. Starting later this year, support for the PlayStation Store on the PlayStation 3, PlayStation Vita, and PlayStation Portable will be ending. As of today, they’ve also shut down the old web store that allowed customers to purchase games for those platforms on their computer. This decision comes as a result of Sony wanting to unify and focus on their more modern and current systems: the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. The PSP and PS3’s store access will be the first to go, on July 2, 2021, with the Vita to follow shortly after on August 27th. Players will still be able to download their already purchased games even after those dates, but once July and August rolls around, any digital games for those platforms will become unavailable to buy.

This is why I was mostly against digital gaming from the beginning. If you have the disc you can always play the game but if you need to redownload a digital game for some reason it's not necessarily permanent.

Sure you can maybe still access it on a new console but what if I don't have the desire to buy that console? I have a gaming PC and would only want a PS5 for exclusives, and they seem to be more open minded about putting their exclusives on PC. So I won't be buying a PS5 anytime soon. Maybe never if games like God of War come to PC, I doubt that will happen but you never know. Backwards compatibility is a good thing but I should never be required to buy a new console to play my old game from the previous console.

Also all 3 of these stores none of their game libraries are compatible with either PS4 or PS5, so pretty much screwed.
This is counter-intuitive. Digital gaming is good, you just have to use services that won't die because of costs, like torrenting for example. I use torrenting a lot and personally I think that DRMs in general are bullshit.

And exactly as I expected when this was just a rumor, you can still download your purchases just fine, so all the idiots doomsaying and telling you to "QUICK DOWNLOAD ALL YOUR GAMES BEFORE THEY'RE GONE FOR GOOD!!!!" just wasted a whole lot of time and bandwidth for no reason.

So long as they allow you to continue downloading your purchases, I don't really care if they close the digital store personally. I've already played whatever PS3/PSP/Vita games I've wanted to play, so it's no great loss to me.
So silly. Sony's not Nintendo. :tpi:

Already did but it didn't solve anything, I think it needs a deliding which is pretty hard to do.

Really? I didn't know. going to do more research on that then, thanks

look on psx place. that's where its devs are. you can find lots of info on it there. I recently bought a super slim myself (haven't gotten it yet), but I don't plan to use any hacks with it. good luck.

Is it overheating or is it ylod-ing? because ylod is usually related to other issues.

This is super depressing. I feel like when an online story goes down, Sony/Nintendo/Microsoft should just send you an email with step-by-step instructions on how to install CFW lol.

The Real question:
-Are those Zeus links still going to be functional after PS3 PSN shutdown?

Just out of curiosity!

I think it's admirable to be against pirating new games, but just plain stupid to be against pirating old games that you have little or no chance of playing anywhere else.
Agreed, makes me think of the Devolution homebrew app for the Wii, made before Nintendont, it allowed GameCube backup playback, but you had to initially have the GameCube disc to be recognized by the program first to ensure you actually owned the game. But who is that protection for? By the time Devolution released, GameCube games had already been long off store shelves, and the only place to buy new copies of the game would be second hand anyway at that point, meaning Nintendo wouldn't have been seeing any money for those GameCube games regardless. Hell, to this day you still can't buy GameCube games in any form directly from Nintendo since they never created any kind of virtual console for it either.

Funny, and frustrating, how digital provides more avenues than ever to preserve and uphold games for the nature of preservation, but lawyers and executives at every avenue have only proved how bad it would be, to be the default format; especially on consoles.

I think it's probably also just a logistical choice, digital game sales on PS3, Vita, and PSP are probably not justifying the continued price of hosting the titles on their servers. (I know for the time being you'll still be able to redownload games you've bought in the past, but eventually I imagine they'll be pulled completely, and this move now is just the first step in shutting down all online services on these systems entirely. Like I'll be shocked if you can still play games online (officially) on these systems 2 years from now.)

I do not understand. They're still storing all the content. I can see removing the specific store fronts, but why also remove the ability to purchase from their online store? Aside from some extra rows in a database and potential search bloat (which could be remedied with some easy filtering), there is literally no extra cost?

Guess Sony doesn't believe in the long tail.

Gotta assume there's something extra we don't know, but this seems like an overall silly business decision.

A woman with no arms and no legs was sitting on a beach. A man comes along and the woman says, "I've never been hugged before." So the man feels bad and hugs her. She says "Well i've also never been kissed before." So he gives her a kiss on the cheek. She says "Well I've also never been fucked before." So the man picks her up, and throws her in the ocean and says "Now you're fucked."

@BakerMan - you can still "own" digital media, arguably easier and better than physical since you can make copies and backups, as much as you like.

    The issue is DRM
  • cearp @ cearp:
You can buy drm free games / music / ebooks, and if you keep backups of your data (like documents and family photos etc), then you shouldn't lose the game. but with a disk, your toddler could put it in the toaster and there goes your $60

    :rofl2:
  • cearp @ cearp:
still, I agree physical media is nice to have. just pointing out the issue is drm
  • rqkaiju2 @ rqkaiju2:
i like physical media because it actually feels like you own it. thats why i plan on burning music to cds
