Nibel, popular gaming news Twitter account, quits the platform

With over 444,000 followers on Twitter, Nibel (@Nibellion) has been one of the most popular accounts on the platform for their timely and diligent reports on (mostly) gaming news. If you're on Twitter, there's a good chance you've stumbled on that account or their tweets. However, the owner of the account announced today that they are stopping their activity on the social media and have already locked their account (but not deleting it so it's not grabbed for malicious purposes, reads the account's final tweet which you can see below).

Last month, Nibel launched a Patreon page for people to support their Twitter activity but that too is being taken down. In the latest Patreon post (behind a paywall), Nibel provides further details about their decision:

I’ve learned a lot in a short period of time. Unfortunately, I was not able to create an interesting and sustainable Patreon which is evident in the number of Patrons stagnating during the first weekend and the first (of many) pledges being deleted during the first week. I have miscalculated the value of my Twitter activity and realize that it is nothing worth supporting by itself for the vast majority of people. It is not me who is popular, but it is that work that is useful. It is not valuable by itself, but a comfortable timesaver, and I get that now. I was unable to create a reliable revenue stream, but l’m still happy I gave it a shot. And I want to thank everybody on here who gave me a shot as well. I’ll look into refunds for recent payments, have already deactivated the billing and will likely close this page this week.

Nibel also cited issues with Twitter as a platform, which were further fuelled by Elon Musk's takeover:

I don’t think that Twitter has yet experienced good leadership, and this trend will not change with Musk either. I do not trust the platform. I do not trust Musk and his seemingly infinite immaturity. I do not think Twitter will fall apart instantly but that it could die a slow death. Why waste more time?

Don't get why people say things will get worst with Elon Musk in charge. There already exists a lot of problems with Twitter, such as there is no freedom of speech and you will get harassed (and possibly ban) for wrong thinking.

Also, just heard from today's news where he claims for each coder, there are 10 people managing them. Never heard of any company with this management setup. And if this is true, this is really messed up in a LOT of ways.

In any case, most of the people that I expect to see to leave Twitter are activists and/or left extremists.

Why every news article related to twitter is retarded and boring?
Because Twitter itself is retarded and boring, like most things people use.

140 (280) chars limit? What's even the point? Normalizing low-attention span behavior?
This is the internet, not a mobile carrier where limits exist for a reason.

I first heard of this stupid platform back in 2009.
The very idea seemed really stupid back then, it just got even more stupid as time passed.

It's basically only effective as a means for Customer/Tech Support to announce maintenance updates if their own network isn't reliable enough for it.

It's a mystery to me why some "social media" thrive while others plummet.
Most likely marketing and viral endeavors.

i'm excited to see dotcom bust 2.0 happening. between meta and twitter i don't know which one i'd be happy to see go first. the thousands of software engineer dealing with non-compete clauses suddenly able to do whatever they want will be great! also meta can stop fucking over my local area with their shitty construction.

go ahead and have your freedom of speech...however...it will NOT be free of consequences of said free speech...believe that
Oh no, Twitter is going to ban my account for saying nono words, what ever will I do? Thankfully I don't live in a country like the UK, where your door gets kicked in for offending someone online.

Never heard of him (though I don't use twitter even as a guest and nobody seemed to link him for anything in any articles I did see) but interesting to see some numbers on professional twatter botherer rather than professional youtube, professional twitch or what remains of traditional words based approaches (granted I don't know who has even gone in for that since the escapist went pop a few years back).

Will be curious to see which of the first alt tech types makes it (had a few news and current affairs types make it already) and whether it will be before twitter, if we want a wildcard I am actually seeing instagram be more than half naked girlies (who knew there was still a market for that) and get something like content on there so maybe throw that into the bets firsts as well.
Though if twitter adds video (I can't imagine it will not be on the "everything app" or "let's copy tencent") and does indeed hold to at least more ideals of free speech/less censorship (I saw the recent AVGN show on Doom got "sign in to view this" by the time I clicked on the link a couple of hours later and that guy is tame as you like, and some various Fallout challenge run types get pinged for enabling "bloody mess" as a perk, so I can only imagine how annoying it is for someone actually edgy to get on) then that could be quicker still.

I am wondering how many people will end up leaving twitter if Elon does follow through on his promises. I know my account is going to be locked down if he does unban some of the accounts that I had to deal with the past. At that rate, the site will be just another social media completely overrun by the worst kinds of people.
you do know you can just block people right?
