The stories of its development are well-established at this point. There were severe limitations on the display technology that were largely unrelated to RAM.

The low ram didn't help, like that game that's basically all wires due to limited ram space. While the games would still have been all red, even one extra MB of ram in the console would have made things better

For some reason while 3D worked okay on 8 Bit games, see Sega Master System 3D glasses, the same tech wasn't used in 16 bit games or 32 bit games. Although some Arcade machines had some 3D effect going on that wasn't exactly common.

However nowadays VR is still a growing market, look at the Meta Quest 2 and 3 sales.

Granted most games are crap but the fact that nowadays you can do a TOP 25 of VR games abd those games actually being good? That's incredible.

Also thanks to the Virtual Boy we did get the Gamecube controller that's really similar; that's something.

People trying to sell Virtual Boy games for years by having then in the Gameboy games section and hoping one was stupid? That annoys me and yes that did actually happen to me. No pics because it was before Smartphones were a thing.

I have no idea where you are getting these ideas.

I suggest LowSpecGamer's video on the subject.

Also I have no idea who was doing that.

This is truly an incredible achievement! A Virtual Boy emulator for the 3DS is exactly the type of thing one would think is really cool and fitting but I'd personally never held faith that anyone would go and make one. Sometimes it feel so good to be wrong haha

Been playing some VB games for the first time in my life. Some great ones in here, huh. Going to bed really late because I'm already addicted to Mario's Tennis.

A store that no longer exists, it was in a mall. Wish I had taken pictures but alas this was years before I had a Smartphone.

There was an attempt to make a Virtual Boy emulator for GBA emulator but it didn't go well.

I have no idea where you are getting these ideas

Look is really not that hard. The more ram the more intructions that can be held on memory as a result the more that can be displayed at once in a screen even if the screen is just red leds and glass.

Who cares!? The people running the store might have been ignorant enough to think they were the same thing.

Even if that does somehow make sense (and it does not), it's not like there were developers who were clamoring to develop for this thing but felt that the limitations of one less megabyte of RAM (!?) were holding them back.

Wait, so theoretically speaking we could run Mode7 SNES games on 3DS?

Attempts have been made with homebrew and... still looks like a GBC color game all in red at best.

Hyper fighting aka a homebrew Street Fighter II clone in spoiler:

it's not like there were developers who were clamoring to develop for this thing

To say people were not impressed is an understatement. The 3D may have been technically better that the Master System 3D glasses but it looked worse, caused headaches and needed an entire different videogame console just for the 3D.

Couldn't get hyper fighting working. 😞

Hey, I'm listening all the praises to Red Viper 3DS and, of course, went after it, to try it myself. But I think I was left out of this party, unfortunately... You see: everytime I load Red Viper and try to open a game, my N3DS crashes.

I thought it was some misconfiguration I made, or something was outdated... But no, all other emulators and homebrew software just work.

Help?

have you tried both the .3dsx and .cia? I installed the .cia, pointed it to a rom, and it just... worked. Do you have your dsp dumped? I'm probably not even on the latest 3ds firmware, and I'm definitely not on the latest and greatest Luma, because I've had no reason to update anything. And I have fastboot3ds as my bootloader.

Oh, and it seems some people here don't realize there are other virtual boy emulators. Directly through SideQuest, you can install VirtualBoyGo on the Quest and play in VR (much bigger screen than a 3dsxl).

I installed the cia file.
DSP file was already dumped.
I saved the crash dump file and took a screenshot of the code shown.
N3DS has the latest firmware installed.

90% of the time, you have to backup your sd card or micro sd card, format it and copy the data back with a program that makes sure the data is not damaged. then try to install the program again. Alternatively download the cia file again using a download manager, as it might have downloaded wrong for some reason.

video spam

You call a video about a Virtual Boy game in a thread about a virtual boy emulator spam, when I was specifically answering the question of "Have 32 bit looking games been made for the Virtual boy"? I can't link the game directly because even if it is homebrew it is still a port of Street Fighter II.
