Nintendo takes down Gmod content from Steam's Workshop

header.jpg

Nintendo might just as well be a law firm more than a videogame company at this point in time, since they have yet again issued their now almost trademarked usual DMCA strike, this time against mods in the Steam Workshop for on the most popular Half Life 2 mod, Garry's mod (or Gmod as it's usually referred to).

The news broke out yesterday, on April 24th, as Garry Newman announced that he would be taking down all Nintendo-related items gathered and made throughout almost 20 years since the inception of Garry's Mod back in the mid 2000s from the Workshop due to a DMCA by Nintendo.
This caused speculation online, as it has been known that often some people completely unrelated to Nintendo send false DMCA strikes for projects that might contain Nintendo assets of any kind (with some of those falsely made strikes sent by a person named Aaron Peters), and Newman was made known about it, with a research about the source of the sent-DMCA strike begun shortly after.

However, in a recently made post by Newman himself, he stated that "the takedowns have been verified by Nintendo as legit", so the removal of Nintendo's items from the Workshop will continue as announced in his post from April 24th.

This is yet another instance of a fan project being taken down by Nintendo, and it's unlikely this is gonna end anytime soon given their increasingly aggressive abuse of the DMCA for anything fan-related.

Thank goodness Newman confirmed everything that it was indeed a real takedown. I seriously loathe the direction of Nintendo. Makes me wonder why people still support them just as much as Apple to this day.
i , myself, as long time nintendo fan and fanboy in the bast, i stopped buying every nintnedo stuff ever since drift issue being handled like a joke. that was enough for me.

And this is why you should pirate every Nintendo game and not buy the next system. Nintendo is clearly more interested in their legal department
Keep like this and I'll always defend you

You don't support Nintendo financially which is good but I'm asking if you pirate their games still cause live I've said, it's honestly hard to not enjoy their games of their services are bad
i do buy nintendo games, just not new, but used second hand. i love nintnedo games, that doesnt have anything to do with their shitty CEO.
when i say nintendo sucks i mean CEO sucks and whoever makes decisions.

I support Steam and devs on steam. i am buying a lot of steam games lately! i like how Gabe handles pr. Gabe is jedi and Nintendo is Sith lord.

While I don't agree with what Nintendo is doing I think this whoooooollllleeee shit storm started when idiots were playing their big release games a week before it releases on emulator.

At least wait till the game comes out, jeez. As I've said before I think this all started with TotK being played before release last year and now we're suffering the consequences.

Either way, this fucking sucks, I play Gmod quite a bit and I love the Nintendo stuff. Does this mean TF2 is getting shit taken down too because uh. Fuck.

I think Nintendo has become the definition of 'just because you can doesn't mean you should'.

And this is why you should pirate every Nintendo game and not buy the next system. Nintendo is clearly more interested in their legal department

One potential problem with this is that I wouldn't be surprised if this just causes Nintendo to double down, due to the 'one download == one lost sale' mentality.

Thinking about it, I wonder if it would be better to rely more on the second hand market or renting, remember, Nintendo sued Blockbuster over game rentals.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nintendo_of_America,_Inc._v._Blockbuster_Entertainment_Corp.

Does that mean No more SMG4?
Because they use GMod for some of their animation

Subject to Nintendos's legal team, presumably they could manually add Nintendo mods, like the old days of Gmod.

The only issue may be finding a host, since chances are anywhere large like Game Banana would likely also be targeted.

Thinking about it some more, I wonder how long before we see archives of this content on IA, etc? Treating mods like they're actual Nintendo ROMs.

I guess I won't be buying the next nintendo system, this was going to be the first system I first ever bought on release date but it seems I won't be doing that anymore and just wait for the emulator and play borrowed games there
I hope they get their servers hacked and their source codes stolen, they deserve that and more
Ever since the Yuzu takedown they got even more bold than before DMCAing things left and right with no regards to their fanbase and it needs to stop
