That said, my burner is almost one of the ones listed as bad (mine's a Sony AD-7260S) so I might need to try investigating the quality of the many other burners in my collection. And of course good old burners also can be hard to find...
If you're looking for a good (but affordable) CD burner, go with ASUS or Lite-On.

They linked that themself a few posts up, and doesn't answer my question? Sorry, I didn't mean to be annoying by infodumping there...

Honestly while it's a good guide its usefulness can be limited since none of these discs (except CMC Pro) are made anymore, so you have to get lucky finding new old stock. CMC Pro isn't even a common brand (I can't find it anywhere in Canada) and most stores don't even sell the crappy discs now, it's started to feel shocking when I see them in reality.

Sounds like my past experiences before I perfected my setup. CMC Pro I'm pretty sure was originally recommended by a Canadian because it was available on Amazon. JVC Taiyo Yuden is also cheapish and essentially the same thing.

My Japanese SCPH-1000 launch PSX from 1994 (apparently the 'worst model' for CD-Rs) does great with FMVs, XA music streaming, and CDDA playback with:

- Plextor PX-708A
- 16x burn speed
- CMC Pro 80 Minute CD-Rs

Have refurbished the psx drive with my other guide as well. But I couldn't be happier in the end.

The guide says "ATAPI/IDE drives pre 2005 are very likely to produce discs with a strong EMF signal."

I do have an Asus WH14NS40 (modern Blu-ray drive mfg May 2020) and a Lite-On SHW-160P6S (DVD burner mfg April 2006... I had a Lite-On CD burner as a kid but it broke, stopped recognizing discs), as well as various LG burners, a Matsushita, a Samsung...

Yes, but in my country, I cannot find any affordable Plextors, as they're becoming harder to find.
The US still has quite a good used market for them. It's sad when I hear people in Europe explain how shipping there works (if it is even offered for whatever ebay listing). I think anything previous to your 760 IIRC should be a great pick, but for whatever reason the 708 is extremely cheaper and has no issues even with redump unlike some other models of Plextor (not including your 760).

I would for sure check the
Lite-On SHW-160P6S
this could be added to the guide if it works well. Should be pretty good. The Blu ray drive is probably a lost cause.

That was when I managed to find good deals, even before I knew about PicClick's existence. Found a PX760A for £30 as well as a PX-W4012TA for £45, and that was, I think two years ago that happened. The PX-708 is a budget model of the Plextor, with CNET calling it "the fastest DVD-rewritable drives on the market".

Definitely do. A Plextor is far more reliable than any other drive in my experience.
Think about it means... probably not I'm afraid. Not only am I broke, but most of the drives I've had have been really cheap or free, and that's a better price for me... especially right now.

For us ebay was really good ~5 years ago, then they introduced these global/international shipping programs, and it seems like it's just been used as an excuse to screw us over with outrageous shipping prices. The only decent one's been Speedpak, which is a program for Chinese sellers...
also @onfy here is canada amazon link for cmc pro
Fulfilled from outside Canada...

I'm unsure what fulfilled from outside Canada means. I just put my VPN to Canada and searched it up. What would be the issue with the listing I linked (genuinely curious USA noob).

You need to pay for international shipping unless you have Prime. (Showing that as $10.57 for me.) Generally speaking it's just a bit more of a pain. (And it still doesn't technically contradict me, almost* nowhere has them in stock here.)

*Amazon seems to stock other sizes in Canada? But I don't like Amazon very much anyway.

This kind of looks promising @onfy @SylverReZ

https://www.amazon.ca/Legend-700MB-...14-b2a5-10abc7608194&pd_rd_i=B07MJRMX2S&psc=1

What's this here?

  • Professional A-Grade (No Valueline B-Grade)
  • Brand: Legend with Pro (MID: 97m24s01f) Taiyo Yuden Technology
  • Type: CD-R Capacity: 700MB 80Min Speed: 48X Surface: White Inkjet Printable in Hub
  • Quantity: 100 Pack Packaging: Plastic Wrap (No Spindle / Cakebox)
  • This Product was commercialized based on MID License Agreement concluded between Taiyo Yuden Co., Ltd and Japan Disc Corporation.

Is Value line worse? Sounds kind of dumb but I have seen that label before and just thought they all were labeled that.

To be honest, even aside from the mild inconvenience of getting them... I'm not really sure I can make use of 100 CD-Rs. I collect original games so I mostly burn homebrew (I guess if I want to sacrifice many discs in the name of development?), fan translations, and ahem really difficult to obtain games.

It's like 50 something cents a disc f(including shipping) for that last listing I posted. The way I could justify it is you never need to waste money going to the store to buy garbage CD-Rs for the rest of your life (if you really are so sparing with them :)). The store bought ones are crazy expensive in comparison anyways.

Au contraire, isn't garbage perfect for when you want to burn garbage you'll use once and then throw away? I guess it depends...

Besides, I have around 40 Varbatims and 10 Maxell Pros, maybe if I ever use them all up I'll get those. (Hope I get a job first, but that's really off topic.)

It’s definitely hard out here, economy sucks. Info is here when you’re ready. Seems like a waste to throw out a good CD-R tho? CD-Rs have enabled me to do a lot more then I’d ever be able to with my console and budget if you know what I mean.

I definitely, totally, have more then one Japanese and one USA real PSX CDROM discs in my collection right now😂 promise.

For my CD-Rs, I have a label maker and jewel cases I put them in very nicely. I treat them just as well as real games and they should last very long.

For what it's worth, when I got the discs I told myself that burning anything that I could just instantly get for under ~$30 on ebay would be a waste of a disc. I've tried to stick to that.

I would like to make better use of the discs, so I need to find how I can determine which burner I have produces the best discs, and maybe improve the software side. (I've been using DiscJuggler.)

I also should play my games more. :rofl2:
