Intent on spicing up your Switch with some custom, textured, controller options? Well, Fired Up Mods may just have the solution for you.

Picture this: your Switch is drab like raw beets, your controllers are limp and smooth like baby's rear, and you're desperate for answers, some way out, some way to stop the mockery of your ruthless peers shouting "my word, look at the human with stock joycons stuck to their switcharoo, what a kerfoogle I bet they eat bananas", and you don't know what a kerfoogle is or why you don't want to be one, but it stings all the same because you do eat bananas. It's alright, we've all been there. The solution? Less potassium in your diet, but also, these custom joycons.

For your perusal, a store on Etsy known as Fired Up Mods happens to make custom joycons with unique designs and textures. The design sent to me is dubbed "Rocky Mountain", and features a granite-like pattern and a semi-rough, yet glossy, texture.

The joycons came in a stock joycon box, with handwriting indicating the style the seller has included, along with a fair amount of packaging inside just to keep the joycons safe. Nothing else is included in the package, no grip nor joycon rails, just the custom controllers themselves. The design is pleasant enough to look at, with dusty browns, blacks, tans, and what might be a shred of orange all sprinkles together to evoke the look of an extremely fine granite.

The prime source of the joycons' appeal, in my opinion, is the odd and pleasant texture to them. It's something I think I'd most closely describe as "glossy sandpaper", paradoxically both rough and smooth, yin and yang, heaven and hell, Simon and Garfunkel, Imogen Heap, etc. This gives it a very delicate, yet grippy texture against one's hand, which doesn't distract while actually playing games. In addition, because of the unique texturing pattern, light is also scatted interestingly on its surface, making it look almost glittery at different angles.

(The design is given a cute extra touch by the joycons having their indicating color changed when registered on the Switch.)

The casing itself is slightly thicker than the normal shell, which didn't present any problems for my hands at all, however it did give me some extra resistance when sliding the joycons onto the sides of my Switch, and especially into a joycon grip. The extra resistance wasn't so much as to make me worried about damaging anything, though, so it's really a non-issue. The holes around the buttons and joysticks are a little larger than normal, revealing more about the internals than one would see normally, though this again is something I only noticed in passing. Unfortunately, the top sliver of plastic between the L/R and LZ/RZ buttons isn't made of this custom molded material, likely due to the comparative difficulty in creating a fitting mold, and while I do miss the extra touch, it's something rarely seen.

For anyone looking to customize not just how their joycons look, but how they feel, Fired Up Mods seems to have you covered. I'm quite pleased with the quality of these joycons, and would be happy to recommend them to anyone. The store manager also handles many other mods, repurposing broken electronics, LED mods, and more.

Overall

Overall, this is a set of entirely appealing joycons, with a pleasant design and a unique texture. It looks good, it feels good, it is good.
Wow I do not like that texture...like, at all. Looks really well made, and it's really nice that they've even managed to change the color in the system screen, but man...this is what is known as "bad taste, great execution"

Bether getting a second switch out of ebay, than theese ripoff prices. There is just no reason, tho pay 2.5 times the price of normal joycons, and then the shells arent even 100 percent fit...
Yeah yeah yeah, i know im always criticising (<--this reads weird) but this is just a joke. Inflation here we come. Ppl buying a selling more and more useless stuff theese days.

For some reason the way that's written makes me imagine you saying it with a heavy Russian accent

I wouldn't say bad taste because I get a lot of interest in this but you're right... it's not for everyone. The wood one I make is actually the most popular followed by the galaxy one. My goal is to make unique controllers and not just another of what all the other custom companies are making. I'm glad to hear you thought it was well done. I'm always looking for feedback

Shouldn't the price be considered a con?
I don't like that color, . If it had the same textured finish and color variance but looked like gray stone instead of whatever that is, it would be much more eye pleasing. I just don't like brown in general, and this is not even a good shade of brown.

Thanks for the input. I can actually do it any colour and if someone requested that I'd be more than happy to make it for them.

I'd like to charge less if I could but these aren't just thrown together. By the time I buy all the supplies, including the joy cons, and the time spent making it, taking it apart, putting it back together, etc... I'm actually not making very much for my time. I do it more because I enjoy it. If you look on other shops my prices are right there with what other people charge as well.

I believe it's just several coats of this or something like it and charging almost $100 more for it

I do use paint like everyone else, but I'm not going to go into detail about what I use for obvious reasons. I'm not going to say you're right or wrong with your views but you're missing some big steps with this. It's not just putting several coats of anything on. Say you want to paint your controllers orange.... you're spending $10-$15 on each can of paint. You need a primer, the color (or multiple colors depending), clear coat. You need to do it properly to make it stay on, you need special tools to open it ($), the time for opening it, painting it, and putting it back together, while doing a good job, may be worth it to some people for the $50 or so you're saying is the profit. Throw in the risk of breaking something and I don't think the price is unreasonable. If you can do this I think it's great

Looks pretty awesome, honestly. That texture is trippy

Thanks Chary, I'm glad you like it. I couldn't decide between sending the wood one or this one since I love them both. Maybe I'll send another design in the future if you're up for it.

I noticed the small plastic buffer between the stick and casing is missing, leaving a gap. Not ideal.

Imagine being able to produce any design you can imagine but instead you make this.

EDIT: Damn, $200+ is quite literally insane.

Dont get me wrong mate. I know theese things can be pricey if done by yourself and then sold. Btw i didnt realize u build em yourself. Thought that was some chineese Bulkware.
The thing is: there are other places where your skills would be needet bether (and wouldnt have so much impact pricewise). For example, stay in consoles, stay at controllers, just do it for the xb1x or Ps4pro.
With Scuf and Pro controllers above 100€/$ you should be fine.
Other Idea: I know GBA temp had (same as Wololo and i hope i dont get bashed for calling them out here) trusted Users for Consoleflashing i.e. PSP, Wii, etc.
Maybe talk to the staff and try to get that status. Then you could let the people send in their Joycons, and they would only have to pay for the upgrade.

:D

That is one ugly fucking set of joycons. Blegh.

Wood texture sounds like it would look great, got some pictures?

Agree 100%. I also like the attention to detail where the modder seems to have customized the color of the joy-cons in the Switch settings menu.

So some guys burned some joy cons in the factory and one of them stepped in and said "hey, let's just sell those for high price and tell the people it's a cool design"

Well played.

Execution, as others mention is great, texture looks like something a bird would vomit up after eating waaaay too much birdseed.

These are way better (in terms of texture and fit and finish is excellent) and cheaper....
