Who would of thought that Square Enix, a company famous for RPGs such as Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest would be capable of producing an incredible experience of horror with Nanashi No Game.
In July of 2008 Nanashi no Game (Nameless Game) was released exclusively in Japan for the Nintendo DS. Published by Square Enix, it was one of the very few horror games made for the DS and in my opinion the best. The game plays two different ways, in first-person and as an old school RPG. First person mode is played by holding the DS sideways like a book, the controls take some getting used to as you can either move with the D-pad or the stylus, thankfully the RPG mode is played normally.

The premise of Nanashi is that a game has been circulating around TS owners, the games equivalent of a DS, and that anyone who plays it dies within seven days. The story begins with you receiving a game from your friend Odaka, who just happens to have gone missing. His girlfriend requests that you check up on him thus beginning your journey to discover the nature of the cursed game.

The game is split into seven chapters each representing a day in which your character has left to live. Throughout these chapters you have to navigate your way through abandoned buildings, roads, and tunnels all while encountering ghosts dubbed “Regrets” which when touched present the player with an immediate game over. Unfortunately the game only saves between chapters which can lead players to frustration.

As a whole I would say that the game was enjoyable and totally freakin’ scary. Some people may not find this game to horrifying but to be fair I am a total coward.

Verdict

What I Liked ...
  • Great Story
  • Ambitious
  • Great graphics for the system
What I Didn't Like ...
  • Incredibly short game
  • Uncomfortable controls
9
Gameplay
Really fun and full of scares
10
Presentation
Well put together game, with a great story-line, and makes the best of the DS capabilities.
8
Lasting Appeal
An incredible experience but difficult to replay since most of the scares can be expected, upon completion a new mode is unlocked but still the same story.
