It’s summer in the northern hemisphere and you likely have some travel plans; and if you’re like me, this means travelling to other countries. But what this might also mean is long lines at the international customs and fiddling around your luggage for your travel documents or just to find some of your tech accessories. To help streamline the process, WaterField Designs has recently released the Magnetic Passport Wallet. Do take a look at the official product page before diving further into this review!

The WaterField Designs Magnetic Passport Wallet retails for $119 on the official WaterField Designs product page and comes with the magnetic wallet itself and a mini pen.

Additional specs details and colour options are as follows:

  • Dimensions: 5" (l) x 0.5” (w) x 6.8" (h); 3.9 oz / 12.7 (l) x 1.3 (w) x 17.3 (h) cm; 110 g
  • Materials: Water- and wrinkle-resistant custom Taslan textile and full-grain, naturally-tanned leather. Rare-earth magnets. YKK zippers.
  • Colours: Custom black Taslan and Tricot textile with black, blue, chocolate (dark brown), grizzly (light brown) or red full-grain leather.

When placing your order, you can choose your preferred front leather panel colour out of 5 options. These are high quality full-grain leather that is featured in - and by now is a characteristic feature of - other WaterField products. It adds a premium look to the accessory and even looks better with age.

As with other products from this company, the Magnetic Passport Wallet is expertly crafted with quality material, hence the relatively steep cost. The strong stitches, YKK zippers and water resistant textile for the body ensure the durability of the product for years, if not decades of use. I haven’t encountered any defects or tears in previous WaterField products I’ve used and expect it even less with this accessory.

Being water resistant is also very welcome as it ensures that your travel documents and tech accessories are safely stored. The design is also minimalist and bears a slim profile with quick and easy access to your passport from the back pocket and easy and secure clasping of other loose documents such as tickets and boarding passes with the magnetic flap. There’s even a mini pen included that will prove useful for filling customs forms. It’s a really convenient accessory that stores your important travel documents in one place that’s not bulky and easy to carry and slide into a backpack after being used.

While the Magnetic Passport Wallet is mainly advertised to store your passport and travel documents, it can easily double as a tech accessory pouch. There are three zipped pockets (a large exterior, a large interior and two smaller interior) which can easily store a USB cable, SIM ejector pin and even an earbud. With adequate space management, it can store a small power bank or even the XREAL Beam, so the content configuration can be adjusted based on your needs (and how bulky you’re comfortable having it be).

This Magnetic Passport Wallet definitely helps in organising your travel documents and tech accessories in an efficient manner. However, some additional features would have been welcome. For example, a key hook would have been very handy to store your keys as would be an attachment for a lanyard or hand strap which would be convenient to just loop the wallet around your hand instead of holding it.

Even if the Magnetic Passport Wallet by WaterField Designs will not appeal to everyone, it will surely appeal to frequent travellers. I’ve been in numerous situations where I’ve been fiddling in my backpack to find a travel document, pen or just to store/retrieve my passport. With this wallet, I can easily have every document organised neatly in one compact accessory that even has room for some frequently used items such as earbuds and a power bank. And considering its premium craftsmanship, it might very well be the only accessory for your travel documents you will need.

If you're interested in learning more about this accessory, do take a look at the official WaterField Designs Magnetic Passport Wallet product page for more information.

Overall

Definitely a recommended high quality accessory for frequent travellers to store their documents as well as tech accessories in a stylish, convenient and organised way.
I do like sfbags products but that one definitely feels a bit overpriced for what it is. Though the materials definitely push the price up. This is one of those things where they should definitely offer cheaper material options.

Also the link at the end is broken, you forgot the last "t" in wallet.

whoops, thanks for the heads up about the link!

yes, the price might be prohibitive but as it is waterproof and highly durable it's worth considering for frequent travelers I think

Ah, yes, when I visit the front page of a gaming & hacking-centric website, one of the items I expect to see that would be important and relevant would be... a review on a wallet?
