Raikov - Metal Gear Solid's greatest mystery

WARNING: SPOILERS FOR METAL GEAR SOLID 3 FOLLOW. I first played Metal Gear Solid 3 when I was 13. The game was unlike anything else I’d played up to that point, and I loved it. Like everyone else, I was mesmerised by the jungle, the story and the music. And like everyone else, I found Raikov...

Comment by 'TheMrIron2' in 'So, I played Mario Kart Wii'

I've noticed a funny bit of perhaps unintentional hypocrisy whenever people begin discussing Mario Kart Wii in the context or skill or comparing it to Mario Kart 8. I don't think many people will disagree with me when I say that Mario Kart has always been a family friendly franchise. In...

Comment by 'TheMrIron2' in '[PSP] Dev Diary: A year of progress and bringing the PSP into the next decade!'

Most PSPs have huge battery mods very easily with standard batteries. It's not an uncommon mod to rip out the UMD drive altogether for a double-sized battery compartment that lasts well over 12 hours at full clock speed, brightness and volume! Hacking it is an absolute joke and it couldn't be...

Good to hear! It's a great time to get into the PSP.

It's a huge convenience when dealing with over 1,000 people in one scene. Worth the questionable proprietary concerns - their data transparency is actually quite good since you can request your data at any time too.

What's wrong with Discord? It's the easiest way to communicate stuff to a large group of people from my experience. 1,300 people is a bit too big for a Skype group! But yeah, the scene is arguably even stronger than the Vita one right now. It's great.

[PSP] Dev Diary: A year of progress and bringing the PSP into the next decade!

This year, the PSP turns 16 years old. Indeed, the PSP was a landmark in handheld gaming; it was the first handheld console that was capable of a truly console-quality 3D experience, one which Nintendo couldn't match for years to come. The PSP wields a mighty 333MHz CPU with a 166MHz GPU and...

Comment by 'TheMrIron2' in 'What do you use your Wii console for?'

I think the motion controls have their purpose - lightgun games like House of the Dead feel better with pointer controls than an analog stick, for example - but sometimes their use is heavy-handed and in some games you'd wonder why they forced you to use it so much.

In other words you're using your Wii as a GameCube

Music in Video Games - How video games compose suitable music

(The example game in question I'll be examining is The Last Story, composed by Nobuo Uematsu - a famous composer responsible for scoring much of the Final Fantasy series, Chrono Trigger and an assortment of other games) Music is always a tricky thing to talk about since the ability of people who...

Comment by 'TheMrIron2' in 'What should I write next?'

Not a bad idea. The answer would probably be more boring than you’d hope for and it would be hard to test but I hadn’t really thought about that as an article idea before.

Comment by 'TheMrIron2' in 'What should I write next?'

I think Fast's answer is indisputably comprehensive for literally anyone's needs so yeah. In short most consoles use (and have historically used) custom parts so swapping them is impossible and overclocking tends to cause timing issues. The original Xbox was an exception since it literally used...

Definitely composition. Music technology hasn’t changed an awful lot since the n64 could produce CD quality, with maybe surround sound being the only significant jump since.

GTA:SA pushed the PS2 in a few interesting ways. I know for a fact they used more post-processing (see: that evening effect) specially to hide some low-res texture work! I'll read up on it. Open world games doing things wrong would be really interesting. I'll have to put that one on the list. I...

I wouldn’t mind analysing 3D World but I just fear there isn’t that much to analyse to be honest. I don’t think it pushes the Wii U in any meaningful way so I don’t think it’s a great case study.

I definitely have a passion for singing as well but I know full well the audience here is a gaming one so I just wanted to advertise the option. Currently I’m edging towards a breakdown of either The Last Story’s music or technology, since that’s a game I’ve been getting back into lately so it’s...

    What should I write next?

Yeah so things are gonna be pretty laid back for the Christmas break and I’ll have time for some more writing, and I have a lot in mind that I can’t decide on. Here are a few ideas if anyone wants to vote on them but I’m open to suggestions: - Analysing a game from a tech perspective - Overview...

Yeah no so the Wii is at least twice that price if you want cables and you will probably be charged $10-15 for a classic controller alone. For $30 you can get a PSP to emulate most of the systems you can on a Wii and bring it on the go (or connect it to a TV, your preference), or get an...
