What firmware does it say you need to install?

I have a vague feeling there was an old firmware version where losing the hard drive bricked the console, because it wouldn't let you install on a blank hard drive.

But you may find it works if you find the version it says it needs.

It's definitely a normal retail console and not a shop demo?

What firmware were you on? Can you put the old drive in and update that to 4.82?

No idea on the firmware it was on. This is years old now unfortunately. I removed the drive a long time ago.

If it helps, the console says update 3.70 or newer.

That still doesn't work. Ive tried about 8 USB drives and tried them all in 2 different PS3 systems too, all say the same error.

I just had the same issue on my old ps3 didn't have a harddrive. put in a new one didn't wanna work. so I ended up having to hook it up to the pc reformatted it put it back booted into recovery mode and updated threw there it formated it to the ps3 installed the update it worked for me so you can give that a shot

I have burned the PUP to a disk and that is now working. The USB ports work as I need to plug controller in for it to work. Still unresolved the USB install though.
