ASUS ROG Ally price reportedly leaked

Asus ROG Ally.jpg

Earlier this month, ASUS revealed its answer to the popular Steam Deck: the ROG Ally. The company followed up by announcing a launch event for May 11 where the price, specs and availability will be revealed. However, ahead of this event, the price for the high-end model of the ROG Ally has apparently leaked. As reported by The Verge, the AMD Z1 Extreme chip, 16GB of RAM and a 512GB SSD model will cost $700, which is only $51 pricier than the 512GB Steam Deck version. An apparent leaked Best Buy product page corroborates with the outlet's information:

As this pricing has not been confirmed by ASUS, we should take this news with a grain of salt. But if this price point for the high end ROG Ally is real, then the lower-spec version should be priced more competitively. Will it be comparable or cheaper than the $400, 64GB Steam Deck model? And does this reported cost for the high-end ROG Ally interest you?

That's a really surprising figure if it's true. I mean, it's still not as low as I'd like, but it doesn't seem to have the usual ASUS TAX that we're used to in the PC hardware world.

EDIT: I forgot to add, I still don't think it's as good value as it sounds as they don't have a track pad which I now think is essential for these devices. At least until Microsoft comes out with a handheld version of Windows.
Joystick to mouse works really well on the ayaneo devices, maybe asus will somehow make that better

The author is not taking into consideration that the ROG Ally may also have more or less than three variants; also, the lowest-priced one may potentially compromise more on power to deliver a low-enough price point. What all do we really know about the Ally so far?

Impressive. If I was considering getting the 512GB Steam Deck, I'd probably go with this instead. That said, Windows is still a PITA on small devices, and setting the screen to native resolution/refresh rate will drain the battery in minutes.
Install HoloISO on the Ally and give Steam OS on it a try! It'll probably work out of the box with thing being a Ryzen APU. You might not be able to do some of the more granular stuff like changing the refresh rate on the fly and stuff like that, but at least you'd get the steam deck UI and Gamescope

Yeah I'd give it a shot if I didn't already have a Steam Deck, which does everything I need it to and more. I doubt AAA games that Deck can only get 30 FPS in will magically play at 60 or more on Ally, maybe 40 or 45. Glad ASUS isn't charging an inflated premium on a product for once though, and most people will be installing Steam on Ally regardless of whether or not they also install SteamOS, so it's a win-win.

I like competition, and this is coming from someone with a Steam Deck. And yes, what people say online is true, the Steam Deck's screen is indeed "garbage" and "light bleed" is annoying. Hopefully this device improves on that.

The screen you get on Deck, as with a lot of devices, is indeed a total crap shoot. I got a cool color temperature with no noticeable light bleed, would've RMA'd otherwise. We'll see if ASUS does any better, normally ROG presents itself as a "premium" brand but there are a lot of cheap 1080p displays out there. Depends on where they source them from.

I watched a media preview for the Ally a few weeks back where a guy from ASUS was answering a few basic questions. From that, the screen seems to be one area they were really focused on getting right, and the high refresh rate was the sticking point as to why it wasn't OLED. Given it supports 120 Hz and VRR amongst other things, I think it's going to be the big selling point for the system (outside of the performance anyway).

People buying this will emulate Nintendo games and buy games on Steam. Valve sealed their victory over a year ago regardless of the consumer's choice of platform.
Honestly not wrong, all these deck verified games will probably have the same compatibility on more powerful devices, even if there is more OS overhead on them.

I'd half expect valve to develop some kind of seal of approval system for new handhelds so they can boast the base "Deck Verified" list in addition to extra power or ability to run the SteamOS, while having a line of Steam Decks as the industry baseline.

All they have to do is continue the verification process as-is, and if you see the Verified badge on a game as somebody who owns a more powerful device, you'll know it runs even better for you.

Why does the design look so cheap :(
Because that's the life of any market, make things as cheap as possible and try to regain at least a 25% mark up value during it's MSRP launch. You could have a premium looking design with crap parts inside it.

Waaay too expensive to ever be practical. Another wasted effort from a company. Sigh.
Why does any moron mention the 512GB Steam Deck as a "price point" anyway? It's literally the same device as the 200$ cheaper 64GB one but with a massively marked up SSD. You can put a far bigger one in yourself and save over a hundred dollars, so stupid.

Thank goodness it's not OLED, OLED is a guttershit format. Constant burn-in and its so fucking dark.

They do have a $599 Z1 (non-extreme) model as well. That said, people pay $3000+ for gaming laptops, and handheld PCs used to routinely sell at $1200+, so $699 is by no means expensive comparatively. It's also worth noting that the 512GB Steam Deck has thus far been Valve's best seller. It was an easy enough upgrade to 1TB for me, but a lot of people just don't want to have to open up their device at all, especially if they're coming from a console or pre-built PC.

WOWEE 599$ that's so not affordable still

No one really pays "3000$+" for those things, though, reviewers are given them en masse making it seem like they "sell well", they don't, at all.
Handheld PCs don't sell well either.

Nobody's forcing you to buy it, and IMO the $400 Steam Deck is a better value. Ally will still present reasonably-priced competition at the higher two tiers though, which is a good thing. Hopefully at least one more big name enters the fray and the portable PC market starts really thriving, because the GPU market is insane right now and developers aren't providing good optimization as a result of all the extra horsepower suddenly available. Deck and Deck-likes set an important baseline for performance, because they can play next-gen games unlike Switch.

They can and have sold in the millions, as is the case with Deck, and as niche products that makes them successful. Long-term handheld PCs are what anyone could possibly want out of a, "Switch Pro" or "Switch 2," and so much more. They are pretty much that now with the SteamOS/big picture interface, actually. Anybody who doesn't want to see the OS underneath doesn't have to much, but it's nice just being able to stream from any platform, emulate nearly any game, and have total freedom without needing to jailbreak.

It isn't "reasonably" priced at all though. It costs far more for what seems to be the same thing in a really, really cheap casing.
