So I'm looking at local used ads for Series S and One X, they are sell for very similar prices.

Series S seems to be the 'clear' winner here because of the better cpu + gpu + ssd => meaning good enough performance for wii and ps2 emulation, plus fast load times.

But at the same time, I can't ignore One X. CPU and GPU still should be good enough up to wii and in time, better ps2 emulation. Can output to 4K, not that it matters for me right now.
Xbox and 360 disc + official backwards compat is a HUGE bonus. Buying cheap OG/360 can easily be done and it really completes the 'all in one emulation machine'
Xbox One games are very cheap as well, but I have a ps4 already, so it doesn't matter much to me, but again, this is a big bonus.

With the series s, you're stuck with digital or gamepass, meaning I'll probably never venture to playing it, because I can just gamepass on my pc.

Wondering what everyone's thoughts are. Would like to hear how good emulation 'really' runs if you have an one x or series s.

Having had a one x and series s both on and off, selling one then buying the other and repeating the cycle few times, I have decided to stick with the series s.

All my games are digital and I have a 4tb external hdd.

But to be honest, I hardly play xbox one or 360 games simply because 99% of the time I'm on retroarch.

Full speed HD Dolphin, pcsx2, ppsspp and flycast, fsr shaders, fast load times are just not possible on the one x.

Have you heard of mario kart fusion v4? Mario kart wii mod with over 860 stages, this ridiculous beauty is what I've been spending time on series s with, no chance of this on one x.

Plus the series s compact size is great.

I have a wiiu also and when I just had that console, I missed having perfect ps1 emulation which is why I'd get the one x, plus 4k is a good bonus but from where I sit, there's not much noticeable difference between 4k and 1080p. And when I'd try a ps2 or gcn game on the one x, it'd look promising getting through the title screen then when a game would load it's a slideshow. So then I'd sell one x and buy a series s.

I'd only sell the series s when I have a lot going on and find it interferes with life commitments. Then repeat the cycle again :/

But this time I will keep series s and pack the little bastard up if it starts interfering with my personal goals in life.

I've never done emulation and haven't setup a dev kit on my Series S.
If you're in a hurry and want to emulate some games, I say go for the One X. It doesn't matter if it's next gen since your going to be using it for backwards compatible games and emulation.
If you have the time and patience, I suggest you wait. There's a rumor going around that Microsoft is making an external disc drive for the Series S. If that is true, I say go for the Series S. If not then the One X is the right choice.

very surprised seeing that you can't run wii, psp, dreamcast at full speed on one x
were you trying to run it at over 1080p internal scaling?

I didn't try overscaling to 4k or anything as my tv doesn't support it, but wii is full speed (at least what I tested), same with ps2. I didn't test psp or dreamcast.

Eh? On the xbox one x? That can't be correct, every wii/ gcn/ ps2 title I tested on the one x did not run full speed apart from a 2d game called Hudson selection 4 adventure island. Psp and flycast fared better but even then fmvs were choppy eg mk4 gold on one x but zero issues on series s.

Try resi 2 and 3 gamecube versions they are slow at 480p on xbox one x.

On series s I run dolphin at 720p (any higher results in input lag) and pcsx2/flycast/ppsspp at 1080p and the titles I run work flawless.

I prefer series s but in your circustances idk.
One X can do 4k but SERIES S is much more powerful.
One X lags in PS2 and Wii games, series S is just PERFECT.
It's true that you won't be able to use your physical games, but for emulation via Retroarch, get Series S.
Hope this hels

Series S also does 4K on tons of games.
The thing is, the One X has a better GPU, but the Series S absolutely destroys it CPU-wise. The CPU on the One X is almost the same as the One S/original One, so it's a 2013 tablet CPU.

Is it piracy if it was released for free? Not in my opinion, but I also think it's not piracy if buying it isn't owning it, and it's not piracy if you can't buy it from the original creators anymore.
