The generic USB mini router route worked ok, and it's been a bit since I've dusted off my PS2, but I moved onto the phat route and buying a pre-modded OEM network adapter with SATA connection (vs the knockoff SATA network adapters that have a non working Ethernet port- just there for aesthetics) and seemed to work much better.
