Hi, I have been wondering if its possible for a flashcard to brick/damage your nintendo DS/DSL/DSi, to me it sounds unlikely that a flashcard would save harmful hardware on the DS memory.
Im kinda noobish on portable nintendo consoles, but correct me if I'm wrong, a flashcard doesnt save anything at all on the internal memory of your Nintendo DS right?

Please discuss this subject.

Thanks,

There were rumours that some of the crappier R4 clones could brick your DS by blowing fuses in the DS but not by flashing the internal memory.

I'll bet any flashcard or official game can brick a DS. It just takes a contact to come off the pcb and cause a short over the other pins, or a foreign metallic object(hershey kiss foil, ect.) to fall down the card slot. Positive thing is it can be fixed with a new fuse, if you have the solder skills.

blown fuse =/= brick

It IS possible for flashcards to brick a DS, but newer DS Lites are apparently protected from this bricking by Ninty, and it happens when you run one of two programs one of which claims to be a r0mloader (that's the name it gives itself) and one claiming to be a hentai viewer. very rarely a "leaked ROM" will turn out to be one of these (for example a Dragon Quest game recently "leaked" was actually the hentai bricker), but the bricker apps are not easily available, and you shouldn't stumble upon them accidently, so you should have nothing to worry about if you just run homebrew. Anyway, if you have a newish DS Lite, even if you do run one apparently you're safe.

If you're really worried, you could install FlashMe which will give you brick protection, but more bricks are caused by failed installations of FlashMe than actual brickers.

Does the DS work with a blown fuse? No.
Therefore blown fuse = brick.

The term "brick" and "bricked" is referring to a device becoming as useful as a brick.
When you blow a fuse, your DS no longer works and becomes as useful as brick.

Software brick = virus ROM, irregardless of flash cart. This doesn't happen often.
Hardware brick = blown fuse from faulty flash cart (R4, N5, M3...)

Is that even possible? You can't save hardware on to the DS Memory! Heck, you can't save hardware on any memory.
That's not what Kata meant and I think everyone knows it. My guess is while Kata's English was good (better than many from the US that I see posting...) it's a mistranslation for 'firmware', which is the software that run on the hardware itself.

I have a TTDS that has screwed up my DSlite. It froze during loading of something, and since then I'd be lucky to get my DSL to load games for more than a couple minutes from my Cyclo. The Cyclo works fine on my Sister's DSL and my DSPhat though. That seems suspicious.

So the only way for a flash card to brick your DS is to blow a fuse?
How would people be able to prevent fuses from getting blown in that case?

It depends on what programs you run on it. If you run the Ds bricker program than yes it could brick your Ds.

I bought an N5 and was going to get a new flashcart but the Supercard DS 2 was announced so I've decided to wait

I've had my N5 for a year or so now and haven't had any problems
