Cancelled Prince of Persia concept gameplay is rediscovered after being on YouTube for 8 years

At one point, we almost got a new Prince of Persia game, which may shock series fans who have been waiting years to see a another entry in the Prince of Persia saga. In 2012, a YouTube video had gone live, showing what was to be Prince of Persia: Redemption, the latest game in the franchise. It apparently sat, unseen for years, until this week, where fans discovered it and began sharing the cinematic gameplay trailer that no one had discussed. Apparently, it had been a pitch to Ubisoft in the form of a pre-rendered trailer to showcase what the game could look like. However, the company decided not to pick up on the concept, as we can tell by the fact that the game never reached completion or released.

A former Ubisoft developer, Christopher Prelot, claims that they had worked as a level designer for a cancelled Prince of Persia game during the years of 2010 and 2011, meaning they likely worked on this trailer. Another Ubisoft employee, still with the company--Jonathon Cooper--said that this was created by some of the current For Honor team, and would eventually go on to inspire Ubisoft's team behind Assassin's Creed III. He also stated the following about the franchise in general:

Sadly Ubisoft are generally quicker to cancel Prince of Persia games than others IPs because AFAIK original creator Jordan Mechner still holds license rights so the profit margins are lower. Would love to see a new one though. I've always wanted a PoP set in contemporary Iran.

If you check the YouTube video itself, you can also see a comment dated 2 years ago, from Marc-Andre Belleau, Ubisoft Montreal's technical designer, who incredulously asked, "where did you get that?!" in regards to the footage.

With that being in 2012, that level of fidelity, or something extremely close, should have been possible the on the then upcoming consoles. Ubisoft would have certainly known about them and possibly had dev kits for them. It's strange that even at the end of the ps360's lifespan, everything was still a million different shades of brown and gray.

Luckily we didn't get this. Why does he look and sounds like a bulky generic soldier guy???

Also seems heavy combat orientated. This isn't god of war...
And the way he climbs walls. What is he spiderman? A super mutant?

I love prince of persia to death. But this isn't Prince of Persia....

In the end it looked like I was watching a mix of Uncharted and God of War. Except for a few time mechanics...

So yeah glad this didn't see the day of light. And I hope someday we actually get a proper sequel...

This has been revealed on purpose. Ubisoft registered the domain for "Prince of Persia 6" just days ago. They're judging interest in the franchise.

as much as I want a new pop, this looks like hot garbage.
>scripted parkour
>the prince looks very generic
>it seems like you have to waste sand of time to even be able to get through some parkour sequences because there is no way to tell when you have to move unless you already saw what happens
>seems like they are focusing too much in the combat
tbh I'm glad this was canceled.
It was merely a pitch trailer. If it actually got the greenlight, your nitpicks probably wouldn't have made it into the final product.

Also, the combat looks great. The ones backing a project need to have an idea of how it will work in terms of mechanics, so having a portion of the pitch dedicated to combat makes sense.

No they wen full God Of War mixed with DMC and Uncharted... A pitch is what direction they want to take the game. This is a horrible take...

A pitch isn't just supposed show the direction you want to take, it's also supposed to "wow" the ones you want to back your project.

Chances are, the direction you want to take will change as you start developing and play-testing. With that in mind, declaring that this is how the final product will look is just dishonest.

Even if the game did end up having mechanics that you personally weren't a fan of, that wouldn't make the game objectively bad. It would just mean the game isn't for you.

Holy crap this looks awesome. Ubisoft's insistence on keeping the crappy AC franchise alive despite the existence of Prince of Persia makes sense after reading that quote about who owns the IP.

I would LOVE a modern PoP game, especially one with insane production value like in that trailer, with giant tentacle monsters and all that. Come on Ubisoft! Ghost Recon is a dumpster fire, AC is almost as much convoluted gibberish as Kingdom Hearts, and Splinter Cell is abandoned. Remake some classics! Especially if they don't own the IP, a crappy PoP game shouldn't hurt them too much in the long term.

Pop was never about the combat but the parkour. They even added stealth elements on the later installments so you can skip the fighting and continue on parkouring.

Just because you chose to play it a certain way doesn't mean other people played the game the same way.

But again, combat exists within the game, thus commiting a portion of the pitch to showing off combat mechanics only makes sense. I don't know why you'd want a pitch that neglected to do so.

no, it literally was never about the combat.
Jordan Mechner (the creator of Prince of Persia) got really upset when they added more depth to it and blood on Warrior Within.
