Capcom leak reveals that Nintendo paid $6 million for timed exclusivity on Monster Hunter: Rise

Switch_MonsterHunterRise_Hero.jpg

Not too long ago, Capcom was involved in a ransomware attack, which lead to over 1TB of internal data being stolen from the company. The information was leaked onto the internet, where fans were able to go through the data and learn plans that Capcom had yet to announce. One of those said documents which has recently gained traction is an agreement between Capcom and Nintendo, which led to the latter paying $6 million in order to secure 9 months of timed exclusivity for the upcoming Monster Hunter: Rise, including covering marketing costs and a flat development bonus. The exclusivity agreement also requires Capcom to wait 6 months after the reveal of Monster Hunter: Rise for the Switch before being able to announce it for other platforms, of which the documents also confirm will eventually be headed to PC.

Well, that's how exclusives work nowdays, after all. I don't see why this is even a news.

Even more, considering we are talking about Nintendo and Capcom (two of the biggest and most important companies in the industry), Switch (currently the top-seller console) and Monster Hunter (one of the most beloved franchises out there), $6M doesn't seem like much for an exclusive, even if it's temporal.

Should always be disclosed, especially when companies pay to delay the pc version ala GTA. Or when Microsoft ran a campaign to try and get people off pc gaming and onto xbox. I bet if companies had to disclose anti consumer practices more transparently they would stop doing them so often.

I think it's a bit ridiculous to assume this will lose Nintendo ALL sales of the game. As I said before, a lot of people were probably already assuming it was a timed exclusive, and there's a fair-sized audience out there who own only a Switch to play modern games on.

And the same people who bitch about Switch exclusivity defend Epic Games exclusivity on the same hand.
Are they the same thing though?
Something is exclusive to Epic vs exclusive to Steam... I click another program to download it/run it no different than switching between Amazon and Ebay.
Something is exclusive to a console. One then has to get the console and suffer all that goes with that (paid online for one, probably controllers) and if it is console vs PC then suffer all that the consoles lack vs the PC.

Can't see this harming sales TOO much since people are impatient, and will buy the Switch version since it's released first.

It's interesting to know how much these deals are worth, wow.

Now we know capcom's future plans
While it's nice to avoid being scammed on Street fighter 6 and stuff, it takes away the surprise of some of the good announcements.
For example, imagine how much more impactful the dai gyakuten saiban reveal could have been

Capcom has a lot of old buried treasure in there, I wanna see some old stuff leak too.
the misadventures of Tron bonne source code was interesting (God help me someone port that to 3ds),but how about Megaman universe, MegaMan legends 3 demo, the plans to localize ex troopers, the MegaMan x betas, the MegaMan zero 5 pitch... There's so many things it would be nice to see.

While I feel sorry for Capcom, this is how I feel as a fan.

Personally, I will sail the high seas for the switch version and then buy it on steam once pc version releases. No point in spending money for a subpar version.

It's naive to think every company will be transparent about this kind of deals. Companies that do these type of deals are trying to maximize sales, and don't stop to think what's best for consumers.

In this case, Nintendo is trying to maximize the sales of the game for their platform. If they were to disclose this deal to the public, the sales would be lower. By how much? I wouldn't know. This isn't anything new, and other companies do them as well. Like I said in my post just above yours, "Pretty much business as usual."

gotta love the non issues of pc gaming

It's still double standard bullshit.

Well now we know how all the whiny "Persona 5 should be exclusive to PS4" fanboys will feel.

Let's see...

Nintendo pays $9 million to Capcom to form what is basically a non-disclosure agreement about an upcoming game.
Capcom's servers are then hacked, disclosing said upcoming game.

I think Nintendo has a valid lawsuit to recover the $9 million. They could argue that Capcom didn't perform due diligence in protecting their data, and Nintendo incurred quantifiable damages as a result.

It was obvious that a deal like this was made, but it is depressing for those of us who thought this game was going to be proof that the Switch could do AAA 3rd party exclusives.
